The El Jefe GX Eagle Mountain Bike takes a unique approach to the XC hardtail with a titanium frame that’s also willing to entertain bikepacking excursions. Titanium provides the vibration damping performance of aluminum at a weight point that closely resembles carbon for a no-compromise feel. The El Jefe rolls on 29in wheels for rollover capabilities that come in handy for rock rolls, steps, and rooty trail sections. With a 67.5-degree head tube angle, the El Jefe isn’t far off from modern full-suspension trail bikes, supplying us with stability in technical terrain. Four total bottle mounts attach all of the gear we need for XC trail rides or bikepacking adventures. The El Jefe is ready for XC training and racing too thanks to chainstay adjustment ranging from 420mm to 435mm, letting us stretch the bike out for stability or dial it in for maneuverability.

This mid-tier build starts with the strong foundation of SRAM’s GX Eagle 12-speed drivetrain that delivers smooth shifting like the more expensive Eagle components, only with a slight weight penalty. The RockShox SID Ultimate fork provides 120mm of travel for a forgiving descending feel, with a cross-country-specific construction that’s efficient for long days in the saddle. Industry Nine Trail S wheels are lightweight and help dampen unwanted vibrations from trail chatter. The Crankbrothers Highline 7 dropper lets us quickly and easily drop our saddle out of the way on descents, giving us more room to contour around the bike.
