The Why Cycles El Jefe Frame is a bike designed with us speedsters and competition-focused folks in mind, who also need something that’s properly adventure-worthy. This titanium build frame puts the focus on the athlete in all of us, giving us a proper cross-country race bike as well as something that can handle multi-day trips out in the backcountry. Why Cycles made sure to include all the options any rider would need for their dream build, with sliding dropouts allowing for a single-speed set-up, and fender bosses to mount panniers or extra bags.
Geometry on the El Jefe is a mix of progressive and classic design ideas with the frame having a notably slack head-tube angle. The 67.5° HTA is slack enough to turn some heads, giving us no excuse for when the trail points downwards. Top tube length is shortened to keep the bike aggressive, but still long enough to compete with modern standards at 597mm on a size medium frame. The seat-tube angle is right in the middle at 73.5°, giving us a bike that is supportive up the climbs but one we can sit on all day through backcountry epics.
The titanium frame gives ultimate compliance, stiffness, and a lifetime gaurantee of rowdy trail and extraordinary miles. Built with some of the highest quality tubing in the industry, the titanium frame is half the weight of a steel counterpart and better able to dampen vibration compared to a carbon frameset. We’re quickly finding out why we ride with the Why Cycles El Jefe, gearing up for a multi-day bike-packing event this weekend before plunging into the red at our local cross-country races the next.
