Why We Like The KICKR Power Trainer

With the updated KICKR Power Trainer, Wahoo offers a straightforward alternative to rocker-plate technology, improves power accuracy, and ease calibration. To keep us from having to source a rocker-plate for our home trainer, Wahoo resourcefully adds five-degrees of side-to-side movement to the KICKR thanks to the new AXIS Action Feet, which replace the standard fixed feet on the KICKR. It’s a simple, convenient, and practical improvement to achieve a more realistic and tunable training experience.

  • Updated indoor smart trainer for the dedicated cyclist
  • KICKR AXIS Feet enhance ride feel with 5-degrees of lateral motion
  • Precision power readings nail accuracy to within +/-1%
  • Calibration-free setup removes the need for manual calibrations
  • Low-noise operation is ideal for small homes and apartment living
  • AXIS Feet work with previous KICKR models (not KICKR Core)
  • Self-calibration is not backwards compatible

Works like Champ

I've put it through the wringer

I purchased the new Kickr as a Christmas gift and could not be happier. Well, I could be happier riding outside, but this is Chicago. The set up was very easy....the hardest part was carrying it into the basement. I like that you don't have to calibrate it before every ride. It is relatively quiet - most of the noise is coming from my drive train. I switch from a thru axle to a quick release in less than a minute, and the adaptors labeled. The unit feels very stable during out of saddle efforts and sprints. The rubber mounts on the legs don't seem to offer any noticeable benefits to the backside pain of indoor training. I was expecting a more noticeable improvement. Perhaps using a rocker plate may help. No connectivity with Zwift platform however, it is not as responsive to short intervals on Sufferfest. Hopefully it will improve with updates.

Terrible connectivity

I've put it through the wringer

Great trainer but connectivity issues make it almost unusable. I would recommend a different trainer until wahoo sorts this out. I’ve even purchased the (overpriced) extended cable in an attempt to solve this problem - but it persists. It’s a big investment and you want something that actually does what’s advertised. Repeatedly disappointed with this machine.

Well made and mostly responsive.

I've used it several times

I will no delve into an in depth review of the Kickr as there is tons of info here and on MANY online reviews that do a fine job of describing the product. SO I'll be short on this. IT is exremely reboust and I'm impressed with how sturdy it is. It pairs up easliy to Zwift with no issues. Well worht the money for me. 400 miles of use and rissing...does make indoor training more enjoyable when paired with Zwift. I've been using it 4-5 times per week since purchase. MY ONLY COMPLAINT- the cadence readings vary way too much, and don't respond well to changes in RPM....it works but not well. The best reason I can guess is that the cadence is calculated on load ont he crankarms...or something like that. When trying to do workouts at specified RPMs this is very irritating to have such a varience....I chose to use the optional Wahoo cadence sensor which zip ties to the crank arm for a more acurate reading. This has cured the false readings...NOTE- a Garmin sensor will work when using Zwift.

Incompatible with some bikes.

Non-drive side spacer using a 142 through axle will damage your frame. Spoke to Wahoo support, they will send you a modified spacer.(When they receive them from the manufacture) The list of incompatible bikes are listed on the wahoo website. I have a Trek Emonda 2021 This is not a wahoo issue, trek decided to re-design their bike. Unable to use the trainer until I receive the proper spacer.

Once I set it up, it's been great!

I've put it through the wringer

At first I set it up wrong, trying to use the thru axel it comes with on my 2020 Emonda, and it didn't fit. The directions tell you to watch a video, and I followed what the actor did, which was wrong for my bike. Once I figured out that I needed the included adapter and the thru axel my bike came with (if I had read the directions instead of the video I would have caught this), all has been perfect. Very easy to set up, just read the instructions thoroughly, and you're off to the races. I use it with Zwift, and have been making FTP gains. I highly recommend the Kickr for indoor training.

Buyer beware!!!

I've used it several times

Loved this product out of the box. However, when I switched from my "beater" bike to my "good" bike for the winter months, I had all kinds of shifting issues. Both bikes have the same drive train(Ultra), but could never reach a satisfying setup with the newer bike. Was all set to take trainer and bike to my local shop when I stumbled on something on the Wahoo website. There I found a list of "Non-compatible bikes for Wahoo Kickr.", and wouldn't you know it, my "good" bike is on that list!! List includes all 2020 and 2021 Trek road bikes, (I have a 2020 Domane!!) Other makes and models also on the list. Switched back to my 2017 Domane and everything is running smoothly. Would rather be riding the old bike outdoors when weather permits, but at least I have an indoor option.

Thanks for the post!

Umm... "I hate my life" Richard. Some of us appreciate reviewers sharing that kind of information so we don't waste time going thru the same situation. Sorry about your jealousy problem. And thank you for the review, Frank.

Good info, I have a 2015 Domane 9.5 and I'm now looking for the appropriate power trainer.. I'll pay attention to the foot notes...

Hi, you might be interested to know that Wahoo has just released information regarding a new Adapter for several affected bikes including yours: https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2021/01/wahoo-further-clarifies-canyon-trek-giant-kickr-incompatibilities-with-new-adapter.html

Great equipment

I've put it through the wringer

You can't go wrong with the Kickr. Wahoo's customer service is spectacular. After a year and a half of heavy use they replaced my Kickr when the sensors needed repair.

Is it compatible with Garmin head units? Say the 810?

Hi William, The Garmin 810 does not have FE-C protocol so it will not control the trainer, however if you are using the Garmin to record your workout then yes it will do that. If you are looking to have a head unit control the trainer to do specific targeted workouts you will want to look at getting a 530,830, or 1030. Cheers

What derailleur setups does this trainer support out of the box? I currently use Campy record.

Hi Randy, Great questions. The trainer comes with a HG freehub body with a Shimano / SRAM style 11 spd cassette. It will work with Campy 11 spd systems but would not be as smooth. If you plan on using Campy you will want to swap out the driver body. Item # WHA0005 will allow you to run a campy cassette. Be sure to check to make sure you order the correct one for the trainer you have. In this case you want to select the one "KICKR 2018+". The bullet points in the description on that page will say it's for earlier models but as long as you select the one that says 2018 plus it is the correct one.
