Wahoo ELEMNT Rival: A dismal sports watch Why does the Rival exist? I recently acquired a Wahoo Rival in my quest to own and try out every sports watch (maybe not every but it feels that way) ever made. I went into this experience with open eyes. I knew the Rival was a sports watch and not general purpose fitness tracker and certainly not a replacement for an Apple watch. Previous experience with the BOLT bike computer gave me hope that the Rival would be a competent instrument for running and cycling. Unfortunately, this sports watch was a dismal failure. Here are the issues that I found with the Rival: Buggy buggy software. I was unable to connect successfully to a Polar H10 or my Stryd sensor. It found them, but was unable to connect. Also even though BLE sensors are supported, my unit did not find or connect to any. Wrist-based heart rate sensor was out to lunch even when walking. I have not had a wrist based heart sensor this bad since the original Microsoft Band. GPS tracks left much to be desired. Even though the Rival uses the same Sony sensor as Garmin and Polar, apparently something is a miss because I was most often walking on top of houses and trees. The user interface (button placement and mapping to UI elements) is all wrong. Unlike Polar, Suunto, Coros or Garmin, to scroll between elements sometimes you use the bottom left and right buttons, and at other times, you use the top right and bottom right buttons. This is especially surprising since the Wahoo bike computers nail the button mapping and user interface much better than Garmin. There were more issues, but I ended up packaging the Rival and sent it back hoping for a refund soon. The main question that I have is this: Why is a well-funded company with a decent software legacy and good track record put out a dismal product like this? At any stage in the last two years, Wahoo could have pulled the plug on Rival and either restarted from scratch or acquired a company like Polar or Suunto. Instead, they are choosing to release a half-baked, dismal product that will sour customers off of their other products. If you are considering a Rival, do yourself a favor and get a Garmin or a Coros.

I have been using the Wahoo Fitness Elemnt Rival GPS watch for about two weeks now. Very easy to pair with my iPhone, the QR code is very handy for setup. The screen is easy to see in low light and in the sun. Reading the data off the watch and the app is very simple and easy to understand. The battery lasts a couple of days with GPS and in activity mode.

Great for my needs! Almost there!

First things first, I am purely a cyclist who does a little weight training from time to time, and this watch is for sure much better for a multi sport athlete. With that being said, I really have liked the watch and I think it does what it does very very well. The GPS is accurate, It tracks my speed on bike really well, and the HR monitor works incredibly well too, I have compared all of those metrics to what I get from my Wahoo Elemnt Roam computer and sensors. I love being able to get the notifications from my phone to my watch while I am on my rides, and the little vibration and chime that the watch makes is much less annoying and easier to feel than anything my phone can do. The screen on the watch is really easy to read and it is very light weight. The watch band has a lot of notches in it so it is super easy to get the right fit as well. The only thing I wish that was different on it is the sensitivity of the buttons. The main button for starting activity tracking is a little bit sensitive, and sometimes can start tracking when I am not doing anything, just from the pressure of me bending my wrist. That can easily be fixed by swapping the arm the watch is on, I wear mine on my left arm, or by loosening the band and allowing the watch to sit higher up my right arm. All in all, I really love this watch and am a huge fan of Wahoo products, they continue to hit it out of the park for people like me!
