Description

Small in Size, Big on Features

An uncluttered cockpit is a thing of beauty and often we will forgo a cycling computer in an attempt to keep a tidier workspace. Cycling is however, a data driven sport and there are moments when we need to stay connected. The Wahoo ELEMNT MINI has become a favorite of ours because of its large display despite its compact size and ease of use. Something about it just looks right perched on our stem. We found the MINI super easy in operation and with just two buttons, toggling between screens to view metrics on rides is very intuitive.

The MINI comes with Wahoo's RPM Speed sensor and is ready to record speed, distance, and time right out of the box. If you want even more data, you can pair it with Wahoo Heart Rate and Cadence Sensors, sold separately. The biggest features of the MINI are accessed after downloading the Companion App and syncing the MINI to your iOS or Android phone.

Once paired with a smartphone, the MINI can show you an entire route map, elevation, and post ride statistics and has the ability to sync rides to third party cycling apps. Our favorite feature is the ability to send a Live Track link of your location to friends and family so they can follow you in real time. This is not only a great safety feature, it also helps you keep track of how late your buddy is to the coffee shop ride. (Or lets your group know that you had trouble getting out the door that morning.) Pop up phone notifications let you know at a glance if it is necessary to pull over respond to texts and calls.

  • A tiny bike computer with big potential
  • Performs standard computer functions on its own
  • Pairs with smart phones for advanced GPS functionality
  • Two button operation simplifies interface
  • Phone notifications keep you in touch while in the saddle
  • Pairs with Wahoo dual-band sensors: TICKR, TICKR X, RPM Speed, RPM Cadence, and Blue SC

Not ready for prime time

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I bought mine directly from Wahoo when the unit was released mid last year, and I returned it within a month. The Mini did repeatedly lose contact with either my smartphone, or the speed or cadence sensors. I liked how you could configure the display from your smartphone, but at the time, the Mini consistently failed to accept and retain my field settings. Last, on my iPhone 5, the battery drain was totally unacceptable; it drained about 25% of my battery in a 30 mile ride. (Note: any iPhones subsequent to the 5 have a later version of Bluetooth that should consume less power, so most users today should see less battery drain.)

Separately, the cadence sensor had repeated problems with losing battery power. I believe this was a problem with the sensor itself, rather than the Mini somehow draining the sensor. And that really was too bad, because I really liked the form factor.

Overall, I was not impressed, and it felt like they'd released a beta product. I wasn't willing to pay $99 to be a beta tester.

Great Value

My phone would die on most rides...this simple piece of equipment eliminates that anxiety and I can still sync my results with various apps (Wahoo, Strava, etc). Easy to install, mount, etc...and for the price...wow!

    Returned it

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

    Reasons for return:
    1. Bluetooth pairing kept dropping
    2. Speedometer not accurate
    3. Can only use during the day, not lighted display

Awesome cycling computer for the basics

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

The ELMNT Mini is a great cycling computer if you are just looking for basic functions like speed and distance, as well as a quick means to upload ride data to Strava or other apps. I use it for mountain biking and it works great because all I really need is speed and distance. It's great because the computer itself is very small/unobtrusive yet still has a large enough display to easily read the screen with a quick glance.

The device connects to your phone via Bluetooth. After your ride the Mini will automatically upload ride data to Strava, Training Peaks, or any other compatible apps that you have linked to your Wahoo account. I found this feature useful because I often forget to pull out my phone and end my ride on Strava.

If you want the computer to display speed and distance in real time you must use the included speed sensor. It can't pull this info from your phone. It will still track your speed and distance for post-ride analysis but won't display it in real time without the sensor paired. If you are using the speed sensor you don't necessarily have to carry your phone. That being said, this computer does work best if you carry your phone on your ride with you. Most people seem to do this these days anyway.

I would have given it a 5 star review but the computer came with a dead battery in the speed sensor right out of the package. I tried several times to pair the sensor and computer and finally decided to replace the battery, which solved the issue. At that point the sensor paired right away.

    Basically it’s Great!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

My cycling computer needs are simple. Speed, time, and distance. The fact that this unit pairs with my phone is a real plus. The text and phone call notifications are very handy. It’s a great value for the price with the speed sensor, However, I also purchased the Wahoo heart rate monitor and cadance sensor to go along with it. I’ve had no connectivity issues and it works very well. The phone app is a real added bonus. It’s wicked easy to use and tracks your location map using your phone’s gps and your metrics are presented in a very clear and comprehensive way. Including, laps. I really like the app!

If live segments and power meters are not your thing then this is your unit. It has the basics covered and then some.

    Just OK

The device only pairs with the Wahoo heart rate chest strap. Other devices with the same price point can pair with a variety of other heart rate straps, including arm and wrist bands. If you’re interested in me monitoring your heart rate, look into other devices first.

Does this have ant+ and does it display wattage

I just got one and will be posting my review soon but this unit does not have ant+ and does not display wattage.
