Metron 55 SL Clincher Wheelset

With all of the great carbon wheel offerings on the market, we'd forgive you for overlooking Vision's excellent Metron 55 SL Clincher Wheelset. What you'd miss out on though is a wheelset that's proven itself on the World Tour stage and one that packs a ton of speed into a package that comes in at a whole lot less than some of its peers. So if your road or TT rig is in need of some new hoops that'll give it an injection of speed, look no further than the wheels we have here.

Sitting at 55mm deep and 25mm wide, the Metron's CFD and wind tunnel-aided shape is designed to hold plenty of speed and pair better with the increasingly wider road rubber between 25 to 30mm wide. Further aerodynamic touches come from the straight pull bladed spokes threading into durable ABS self-locking brass nipples and optimized shaping of its hubs. Those watt savings don't end on the flats though, and it's a stage racer or a rider looking for a one-wheel quiver's delight. At 1580-grams it doesn't get bogged down on the climbs and it always fancies a punchy wall or fast run-in to the line, whether that's for a state championship medal at a crit or county-line bragging rights at Tuesday Night Worlds.

Vision builds these wheels by hand and laces it radial up front and in an asymmetric 2:1 pattern out back. By doubling up the spokes on the drive side, not only does it help improve the power transfer, but by reducing the number of spokes on the non-drive side, the spoke tension is higher, better balancing the spoke tension differential that’s inherent in dishing the rear wheel to accommodate a cassette on its Shimano/SRAM 11-speed road alloy freehub body. To ensure smooth spinning for several seasons, the hubs are fitted with 6 sealed cartridge bearings and the large, 17mm front axle ensures proper stiffness and sure tracking. And unlike sketchy carbon braking of old, the Metron 55 features a laser-etched micro-dot brake surface texture that improves braking performance in all weather conditions.

Worth every penny

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Took them to the LBS right out of the box. Weighed 1460g for the set.
Didn’t know they were tubeless compatible. Nice surprise. Took them on a 30 mile varied ride (hills and flats) and was impressed. Smooth ride, reasonable weight, spun up and kept speed well. Great braking (only tested in dry weather). I’ll update in about a month.

Update: A little sketchy in a crosswind. Nothing unreasonable for a 55mm rim, but I wouldn’t do any hands-free riding when it’s windy.
