The Ultimate Reservoir.

Ultimate Direction seemed to think of everything while designing this Reservoir. Its drip-free HyperFlow bite valve gives a super-fast flow, and the Gator clip uses a hook-and-loop tab so you can attach it virtually anywhere. Ultimate Direction's leak-proof RollTop closure has a large opening for adding ice and cleaning. The neoprene-insulated tube prevents water from warming and freezing, and a central baffle maintains the reservoir's shape for minimized slosh. The Reservoir also features FDA-approved polyurethane, cleaning instructions printed on the bag as well as a volume index, a top grab loop, and a double-welded perimeter for long-lasting durability.

Favorite Bladder

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I prefer this to my bladders with the screw "lid" on them - the slide top makes for fast and easy cleaning, less water spews out when I close it, and I can use it as a handle. When I first got it, I was hesitant about how thin the material seemed but I haven't had any trouble with it. The hose is more bendable than my other bladders so it's easier to drink while I walk (is a pro) but it sometimes goes rogue and water gets on my shirt (could be a con if that sort of thing bothers you). If you don't overfill it, closing it isn't a challenge. I usually let mine drip-dry but there isn't a divider in it so you can just wipe it out with a paper towel if you need to stow it away quickly.

Stay hydrated

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Holds water and lets you drink it. Works perfectly with the UD fastpack 15.

Works well

I've been without a hydration bladder for years after falsely believing that bottles were superior. Well, unless it's below freezing, bladders are the way to go. I never drink enough when my water is buried in my pack. Now I'm well hydrated and feeling much better on bigger days in the heat.

    Pretty good

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I got this bladder for my Ultimate Direction vest, but have used it for backpacking and dayhiking as well. Many of the features are great (lightweight, simple, easy to clean), but there are a few things that I don't love about it.

As others have mentioned, closing the bladder is not easy. Few things frustrate me as much as trying to close this bladder does! It also doesn't have as much flow through the valve as I would like - I always feel like I'm left wanting more water in the end.

    Good but not great

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Other reviews have correctly noted the good points of this bladder - easy to clean, no plastic taste, and easy to remove the hose.

It is not always easy to close, especially after you've put it in the dishwasher - then you need to carefully make sure that the top is folded exactly along the intended lines or it will be very hard to close. You also need to follow the directions about lubricating the hose attachment point periodically. I didn't do that with a previous version and broke the hose off in the bladder.

Also, despite what the description says, the bladder does not come with a neoprene-insulated tube. (At least, mine didn't.)

Hand washing is definitely good enough, to sterilize these bladders. I haven't seen anyone recommend putting it in the dishwasher.

Good call on the lubricating. They get really grippy otherwise.

    Easier To Use

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I replaced an old Camelbak bladder with this one and I like it better overall. In particular, I like the sliding closure better than the rotating closure on the Camelbak. It is also nice that it can be turned inside out easily for cleaning, and the hose is easy to remove as well. Great bladder.

    Pretty good!

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I haven't experienced a ton of hydration packs, but this one gets the job done. Some highlights: long hose, does not taste like plastic (the biggest one for me), and no leaks.

    The Absolute Best

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

These people know what the heck they are doing. And it makes sense. If you are ultrarunning, so like, 18+ miles a day, your bladder is going to be your best friend, next to your shoes.

I highly recommend this bladder, over all others. This wins on all fronts.

Best bite Valve: You can take tiny sips, without expending much energy. I find myself taking semi-constant sips, during high impact runs and hikes, without even realizing I'm doing it. You need very little energy to get water out of this bite valve.

The open and close valve is easy to use, but you can just leave it open during your run or hike, and it won't drip.

Easy to fill: This has the widest opening. Other bag styles open about half as wide. lip.

Easy to secure: simply fold and slide the cover on.

Easy to clean: The opening is very wide and there is no divider inside, so you can reach in and wipe it all down.

Easy to dry: fits over a wine bottle and drips dry.

Easy to empty: When you need some water for your pup or washing your hands., you don't have to take this one completely out of most packs. Just open the top and pour.

Tastes Good: This has the best taste I have found, as well. I am very sensitive to plastic taste, but after just a couple uses, I don't notice a taste at all. It's superior, by far.

I'm so stinkin' happy I finally tried one of UD's bladders! All my bladder problems are finally, in the past.
