Description

Turn up the ruckus.

Whether you're traversing the mountains of New Zealand, or lapping the local bike park on a sunny weekend, the Troy Lee Designs Ruckus Shorts are decked out and ready for the adventure. Their trail-ready attitude comes across strong with the generous inseam that stops below the knees with room for pads to keep you covered when you book it a little too quickly into a chunky rock garden, and four-way stretch that lets you throw your bike sideways off of a booter, or crush climbs without restriction. When the mercury starts to rise, unzip the inner thigh vents for active cooling when you're pushing it down the trail.

Much like previous generations of the Ruckus short, the 2018 models are designed for shredding hard all over the mountain, but they might not look quite the same, as they saw some upgrades this year, with fit being the top priority. The front zipper now features a double-button low profile top that eliminates overlap when you're on the bars, while a redesign to the 2-way stretch rear panel forms a new shape that offers better articulation, without ditching the iconic TLD aesthetic. The waist saw more than just the back panel change, though, with new anatomic contouring that feels sleek and comfortable for all day shredding.

Softening the sting of jarring trails and rocky outcroppings, the included chamois actively wicks moisture while dissipating vibration and reducing saddle abrasion. This chamois is removable, so you can rock your favorite padded liner short with the Ruckus. For a precise fit, adjustable waist tabs prevent this short from sliding off during fast movements. And because you rarely ride without gadgets, snacks, or tools, a variety of secure-stashing pockets make easy work of carrying all your riding accessories.

  • Bring on the ruckus with TLD's most popular MTB short
  • Stretch is improved with redesigned rear panel
  • New contoured waistband is more comfortable than before
  • Adjustable waist cinches to the perfect fit
  • Ample pockets for stashing riding essentials
  • Inner thigh vents let you drop heat on crushing climbs
  • Vented mesh on outside of legs lets fresh air in
  • AIR Liner cushions your sit bones on long rides

How to Measure:
Jersey measurements on this chart represent measurements of the actual garment and not of the person wearing it. To figure out your size: take a piece that fits you well, lay it down flat, and whip out the tape measure. Compare your results with the numbers here, and choose your size accordingly.
1/2-Chest:
Measure across the broadest part of the front of your chest, at armpit level, keeping the measuring tape parallel to the ground.
Front Length:
While standing upright, measure the distance between your waist (typically at navel or top of the hip bone level) and the top of your shoulder, to the left or right of your spine.
Sleeve Length:
Standing up straight with your arms at your sides, measure from the base of your neck at the center of your spine, along the top of your shoulder and down to your wrist bone, along the outside of the arm.
Waist:
Measure around your natural waistline, keeping the tape a bit loose.

Bombproof!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 34

My new favorite pair of shorts! Cut slimmer than most of the riding shorts that I own, which means I no longer get my shorts hooked on the saddle. Conveniently placed pockets and some well placed vents. I've taken a couple of spills, but they look like new. The four-way stretch material allows me to move around on the bike but yet not feel restricted. Chamois is solid...though on longer rides, I'll stick with a pair of bibs and wear the shorts over the top.

Sizing is spot on.

Nice, but not for me

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

First impressions when pulling them out of the box ... So heavy! I almost didn't try them on. Once on, I thought these might be the most comfortable MTB shorts I have ever worn. However, riding was a different story. The fabric would cling to/grab the top of my thigh irritating my skin. I am more of a cross country rider and typically wear road shorts or lightweight over shorts. I also purchased the Zoic Ether which worked out better for me, yet lacked the grippy waistband.

Sizing was accurate, grippy waistband on the back of the short helped keep them up, front closure was secure, adjustable waistband was nice, chamois was comfy.

Solid and ventilated

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Troy lee designs ruckus shorts are awesome. Love them probably will end up buying a secondary pair. Lots of ventilation. They work great for pedaling. No weird rubbing and love the inside of the shorts as well so no complaints here.

Top of the line

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Medium

I owned the old model of the Ruckus and these things are a serious upgrade. They are a nice mid-knee length and the materials are much nicer. I use these shorts everyday and can't find a fault. Zipper vents and adjustable waist straps are a nice touch. Grippers on the lower back keep them in place and the internal meshing keeps you cool.

Ruckus for get'n Rompy

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I LOVE these shorts. They are my go to for days up at deer valley BP. Plenty of stretch. Super durable fabric. Liner is pretty stellar too!

Love the Stretch

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

These are becoming some of my favorite shorts to ride in. Love how stretchy and light these things are. If you're looking for something comfortable go with this.

Favorite Shorts

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

These are by far my favorite bike shorts. Super durable while still being fairly lightweight. Pockets and venting are well thought out. Highly recommended!

Nice and stretchy

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

These are very stretchy without giving up breathability. Just the right amount of pockets. They look nice too. They seem to run a bit large.

Nice Shorts, run large

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Awesome shorts, breath well and durable for days in the park or pedaling around. Runs larger than the previous year model - I bought a size 34 and at 5'11

Pretty Good Short/Chamois

  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: 34

TROY LEE DESIGNS RUCKUS SHORT is an almost fantastic option for trail and enduro riding. The pocket options are fantastic with a zippered left full and a small zippered right lower pocket below an open larger pocket so you are good for anything storage wise. Material is more solid than wicking but that is preferred and the closure system on the front is good. The chamois is actually pretty amazing as the sizing is almost dead on and supports well though the short sizing is much larger fitting than the liner short which makes good for hip padding but feels overdone if not.

Breathable Shorts with a Good Length

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

So these new TLD shorts are made from a lighter, stretchier material than the 17 model. They are definitely more comfortable but i think that comes a bit at the expense of the durability. On a steep section of trail i leaned back really far and my back tire nearly scraped a hole in the back of the shorts. I imagine if I took a really big fall the shorts would have gotten shredded.

A welcome improvement

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I've been using primarily TLD riding gear for a long time, and this year's equipment is their best yet. These are the most comfortable riding shorts I own. They breathe really well, have two vents on the inseam that really do work once you're moving on the trail. As others have mentioned the 4-way stretch fabric allows great range of motion, and doesn't feel like your wearing a tarp like many other MTB specific shorts.
The chamois is also a cut above what they have been stocking in their shorts in years past.

Tough and Durable Stretch Fabric

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

These are my favorite mountain bike shorts. They are a great length sitting barely below the knee. I like the one zippered pocket for my phone and the other one without a zipper for quick access to my keys. My favorite feature is the tough and durable stretch material. The chamois fits great as well.

Solid.

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

These are pretty bad ass shorts. Material is awesome and great pocket placement and features. I rode in them the day I got them and was thoroughly impressed. It was a cool day and these shorts seemed a little warm even with the vents open but hardly noticeable. The chamois these came with is probably the best I've ridden in to date. I'm 6' and 170 lbs and pretty spot in on in a 32. These seemed just ever so slightly big on me but nothing that couldn't be dialed in with the waiste adjusters.

Awesome review Jarad! Thanks for writing & have fun riding this weekend!

Look and feel great

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Great fit, I like the length of these shorts. Not too long but long enough to come over the knee. The material feels awesome and has some stretch to it that allows for unrestricted movement.
