Description

Moves with you.

When you and your enduro rig head out to spend a day rallying singletrack, the last thing you want to worry about is bulky pads getting in the way of your ride. Troy Lee Designs makes the Raid Knee Guards with a breathable, flexible neoprene and mesh construction that houses tough padding to keep your knees from getting torn up by the trails. An abrasion-resistant cover equips the Raid to handle brushes with trail furniture without complaint, while a polyurethane calf band and silicone gripper keep the whole piece securely in place so you can focus on dicing your next line rather than babysitting ill-fitting gear.

  • Knee armor for mountain bike rowdiness
  • Calf band and gripper keep the protection in place
  • Flexible sleeve doesn't impede pedaling or body English

Lightweight

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Compared to my POC VPD 2.0 knee guards, the TLD Raid knee guards are really light. After putting the TLD Raid knee guards on, my first impression was "heat", as in they are warm. For my initial test ride, I did a 1.5 hour ride, and an hour into my ride I started feeling rubbing on the inside edge of my left knee cap. When I got home, I looked on the inside of the knee cups, and there is a raised seam that runs all the way across the knee cup on both knee guards. Seriously?!! The chaffing did not break the skin, though. I'll give them a few more rides before I determine whether to return them. Now, I've had five additional rides using the knee guards, and I have not experienced the rubbing problem anymore. I've been paying more attention when I put on the knee guards so that the knee cup is centered laterally over my knee, and that seems to have solved the chaffing problem.

By the way, these are symmetrical knee guards: there is no way to tell which is the left or right knee guard. I wore the knee guards so that the straps wrapped to the outside (away from the center line of my bike), like my other knee guards.

I was on the small end of the measurements for the XL/XXL size, so I was worried that the knee guards were going to be too big, but that was not the case. Perfect fit. I rode in about 75 degree temperatures, and despite my initial impressions, I didn't notice the TLD Raid knee guards being excessively hot while I was riding.

I just checked my POC knee guards, and surprisingly they have a seam in the exact same place as the TLD knee guards, but here's the difference: the POC knee guards use a flat seam, while the TLD knee guards use a raised seam. Image of the seam running across the TLD Raid knee cup:

Lightweight

Trustworthy

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have gone down many times with these on and they have saved my every time. Super lightweight you can't even feel them when you're riding. I love the silcone strip really helps them stay in place.

How is the fit? True to size? Big?

great stuff

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I love these pads. light and they stay in place well.

In name only

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I was impressed during Initial fit tests and even the first few rides with the comfort of these pads. Since the TLD Raid knee pads cover more of your leg, they cause you to sweet more. That extra sweat soaks into the lower portion of the knee pads and weights them down. Since there is only on strip on silicone at the top they start to fall down. I wanted to like them, but after fighting falling pads all the way down a long rocky decent in the Arizona sun had me side lining these pads. I hope they work in cool weather.

You sure you got the right size bud?

Not too hot

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Nice pads that are not too hot. Stay in place and you hardly notice them.

Great pads

  • Fit: True to size

These pads have been great so far. They stay in place through the ride on the bike park. Don't seem too hot and I forget I have them on. I would highly recommend

Bomber Pads

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

These pads are super burly while also being very lightweight and almost unnoticeable when riding. I had a pretty hard crash to my knees with these on and came away with out a single scratch and the pads stayed in place. I would highly recommend these for DH and lift assisted riding.

Confidence in a Comfortable Package

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

These have been my go-to knee pads for lift assisted riding this season. The reason I grab these among the handful of other pads I have is primarily due to the comfort they provide and I have confidence in the protection they provide. TLD really nailed the fit of these pads to make them non-restrictive and seemingly disappear on your legs. Adding to the comfort, the D3O internals offer a ton of security in a lightweight package that is flexible. Coming from the T-Bone pads, these offer just a bit more shin protection as well. You won't regret getting these!

Great protection with mobility to pedal

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I have resisted wearing pads until I got the TLD Raid. Very comfortable in a lower profile design with sufficient protection. They remain secure on the knees when pedaling hard without strangling your leg. Excellent product!
