The shin bone's connected to the knee bone.

Integrated knee/shin guards are notoriously bad about staying put. No matter how much adjusting you do on the chairlift, they are usually down around your ankles by the time you're two turns into your run. The good folks at Troy Lee Designs recognized this problem and decided to put a stop to it once and for all. The KG 5450 Knee/Shin Guard is cool and comfortable. Best of all, it stays where you want it.

TLD designed the KG 5450 Knee/Shin Guard with comfort as the very top priority. Troy Lee's X-FIT system uses a wraparound sleeve to keep the pad in place. Unlike bulky straps, this sleeve moves with the body for a natural feel. The main body is constructed primarily of stretch mesh in places that don't see a whole lot of impact and a rugged woven Aramid material in high-abrasion areas. The stretch mesh fabric allows air to flow freely through the pad to keep you dry and cool, and also keeps the weight down. The KG 5450 also incorporates Vent-Trak channels that move air over the skin to reduce heat and perspiration.

The brunt of most impacts is taken by the internal knee and shin caps that are designed to stay close to your leg for a natural feel and comfortable flex. Surrounding the pads is TLD's Strata foam, which moves naturally with the body while it protects so it doesn't feel like it's binding. Inside, silicone grippers keep the sleeve in place so it doesn't slide around uncomfortably while you ride.

The Troy Lee Designs KG 5450 Knee/Shin Guard comes in Black and is available in sizes XS, S, M, and L.

  • Knee and shin caps take the brunt of DH and freeride collisions
  • Strata foam provides flexible fit that protects without inhibiting pedaling
  • Aramid and mesh sleeve keeps the padding in place
  • Vent-Trak channels improve breathability for all-day comfort

Saved my Bacon*ny Knees*

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

These are a stellar set of shin/knee pads. Light weight, breath exceptionally well. Protection where you KNEE it, when you KNEE it. No sliding down, super grippy. Saved my bacon at Deer Valley on closing day.

Scratch Free Legs

These pads are awesome for keeping your legs and shins scratch free but when it comes to hard falls, they fail (see picture). They are super comfortable when pedaling up hill and they look good too. I would recommend these for more of the cross country rider not the DH rider.

Scratch Free Legs

Protect Yourself

These have been my main knee pads for about the last 5 years. They stay up surprisingly well and I like the little extra length for offering some shin protection in addition to the knee. I went with an XS for my little chicken legs.

    Great all around pad

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I love these knee pads for anything from riding lifts all day to pedaling some more aggressive cross country. I usually pull them down to my ankles if I'm pedaling a lot but they are great in short pedals and they breathe really well. Plenty of protection if things don't go as planned!

    I prefer the knee-only version

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

*I wear the knee-only version typically, but these ones offer more protection and are also a great pad.

This past year I decided that my knee pads I've been wearing the last 6 years with no issues to gripe about and have protected my knees sufficiently certainly could not be as good as all the newer stuff. So I went on a quest and I've tried on about 6 other knee pads, but every time I tried on a different one, all I wanted to do was wear my old tried-and-true ones. So I ended up buying a third pair of the same ones, as they just work, they don't make me hot, I can slide them down to my ankles easily if it's especially hot out, but they have yet to move or slide in a crash. I love them.

    Comfortable fit!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

These shin guards have saved my legs from getting all thrashed. They are a great fit and aren't too bulky . They stay put once I put them on and but they don't squeeze my legs. I highly recommend these knee guards. If you need help picking a size shoot me an email and we can get you in the right size.

    Awesome Shuttle/lift pads

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I got these pads for shuttling and lift served riding since I have some lower profile ones for pedaling. I really like them but wish I would have gone a size smaller since the upper part of it is a little loose.

    Wife Loves Them

    • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

Got these for my wife. Fit perfect, not too tight, comfortable, great protection. She loves them so we grabbed the elbow guards as well.

They stay put and are comfortable

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

    • Size Bought: XS

I've crash tested them on dirt, roots and rock. They don't move on your knees or stick to the obstacle while your flesh keeps going. I've had other pads that stick to the trail and when I came to a stop, the pads were no longer in place and I was missing flesh. The 5550's are great too.

    Do the job.

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

    • Size Bought: Small

The CC rep advised to get S, both knee and elbow. These were a good fit, stayed put, M would have been far too big. My first set of pads. I did see other pads with velcro straps and covered more leg, suppose all a personal preference. For me these worked well.

    These pads stay put!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I wear these pads all the time! Not every ride but just about. I've crashed in them at high speed and didn't have any issues with them slipping down off my knee.

My boyfriend also wrote a review... here's what he had to say:

I have owned three pairs of this knee pad over the course of as many seasons. On average I ride around a thousand miles a season and the pads seem to hold up pretty good through about one season. I wear these pretty much on every ride I do. The pads are surprisingly comfortable and I hardly even notice they are on - even while climbing. They do tend to slip a bit over the course of a ride, so I do find myself adjusting them (pulling them up) from time to time. Not a huge hassle, especially given how light and comfortable they are.

I would assume these run a bit on the larger side - a medium fits me just really well, but I would have thought I would be more of a large. Not the case. Also, the pads do tend to stretch out a bit after the first few rides, so going one size smaller seems to work best.

    These pads stay put!

good coverage that doesn't feel too bulk

I am really happy with the protection and the lower profile of these. I wear them both under by motorcycle pants when riding my 450 endure through the trails, AND when enduro mountain biking with my buds. The lower profile fits well with my motocross boots, and for mountain biking, they protect without chaffing (at least for a couple of hours of riding). They protect and therefore do cause some sweat build up when working hard, but having ditch the MTB in a moderate speed low side crash on hard packed off-camber, I can say that it is worth the bit of sweat to keep the skin on your knee caps and shins!

Do people think these are too burly, hot, and heavy for riding all the time on the single track? More of a bike park pad?

I use them for enduro MTB, and I have found that they are fine. Yes, they have padding, so they can be a bit sweaty if you are climbing hard and then descending. I actually will slide them down on longer, in the saddle climbs to get a it of cool air on my knees and them pull them back up into place before charging it.

        very very nice

        • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

All I am going to say is buy em, they are totally worth it. Like everyone said size down. I went with my normal size and they are a little big, but my size was not in stock, they moved around and shifted a little while riding but never came off my knee. I rode with them on for 5 miles uphill and they are pretty breathable, and I really like that. When I reached the DH I took a small fall and they did shift off my knee a little bit but took the brunt of them impact, fully impressed, and can't wait till my size is in stock.

        Protection worth every penny

        • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I recently destroyed a pair of knee and shin pads I owned after taking a hard crash over shooting the landing of a jump. Knowing I needed new pads I decided to try these out. So far they have been awesome and have held up really well. The materials are tough and show no signs of wear even after a few good falls in them. I love how easy they are to get in and out of and they are low profile enough to be worn under pants when the weather turns chilly. The padding is not bulky but certainly protects from impact. If you are unsure what size to buy, I suggest going down in size, I measured 14.2 on the mid-calf and am 5'10" 165 lbs and the medium is barely tight enough. The small may have been the better fit but these still stay in place and have not moved around while pedaling. I recommend these to anyone wanting great protection that does not break the bank account.

        These are the bee's knees!

        • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I bought these along with the elbow guards from TLD, and I'm very thankful. I took two spills and had no injuries. Slightly sore, but for the money it's much better than introducing your joints into nature at 25-30 MPH if you take a spill.

I got a size Large and the fit is snug, (227lbs, 5'11", wear XL leg warmers, big legs) they didn't slip at all while I was wearing them. Putting them on, you've got to be careful as not to rush and pull them up into place, you don't want to rip the stitching of the elastic fabrics.

They're very flexible and didn't cause any discomfort. The elastic fabric grabs onto your thigh and calves, so it leaves the popliteal area (the spot behind your knee cap) open for movement and air. I wore these all day, did very minimal adjusting, didn't slide down or move much when I too a spill, had no problems pedaling; very comfortable.

You'll look like a ninja while wearing them. Ladies love it when you look like you're gonna drop down from the roof and stealth attack some mofo like a pro. Even some dude commented while I was on the lift. He said "This guys looks like he's ready to tear shhhiiii- up!"

So put your armor on and tear shhhhiiii-up!

        These are the bee's knees!

        Comfortable Protection

These do seem to run a little large. I'm 6' 180 lbs so I originally ordered large but they were way too loose. Swapped them for medium and they fit me perfect. Oddly, the large EG 5550 elbow gaurds fit fine.

Anyway, nice design, solid construction, and quality materials. Theses knee guards are very comfortable. Haven't had the chance to put them to the test with a crash yet, but its only a matter of time.
