Description

KGS 5400 Knee Guard

Knee pads can be a real pain in the, well, in the knee. They're hot, bulky, and they constantly move around so you spend the better part of your day pulling your pads up. That's what the chairlift is for, right? Not anymore. The Troy Lee Designs KG5400 Knee Guard is made with sweat-wicking stretch mesh fabric and low-profile foam for the most comfortable knee protection possible. And the biggest bonus? It actually stays in place.

TLD designed the KG 5400 Knee Guard with comfort as the very top priority. Troy Lee's X-FIT system uses a wraparound sleeve to keep the pad in place. Unlike bulky straps, this sleeve moves with the body for a natural feel. The main body is constructed primarily of stretch mesh in places that don't see a whole lot of impact and a rugged woven Aramid material in high-abrasion areas. The stretch mesh fabric allows air to flow freely through the pad to keep you dry and cool, and also keeps the weight down. The KG 5400 also incorporates Vent-Trak channels that move air over the skin to reduce heat and perspiration.

The brunt of most impacts is taken by the internal knee cap that is designed to stay close to your knee for a natural feel and comfortable flex. Surrounding this pad is TLD's Strata foam, which moves naturally with the body while it protects so it doesn't feel like it's binding. Inside, silicone grippers keep the sleeve in place so it doesn't slide around uncomfortably while you ride.

Your knees will thank you later

    Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I don't enjoy MTB, as I'm always afraid to fall, but sometimes my boyfriend who is an avid MTB enthusiast asks me to come along with him. For those rare days that I get on a bike, I make sure to use these pads to help me control my fear of injuries. These guards fit the purpose, and they actually helped me enjoy the ride.

I am a medium across the board, but am an XS in these! I ordered the M first. Those were too big so I sold them to a friend. Then bought the S, but too big and sold to another friend. Now, waiting for my XS to arrive. Not too hot and provides adequate protection for simple steep hills around Barbados.

    Have used these for years

    Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

This past year I decided that my knee pads I've been wearing the last 6 years with no issues to gripe about and have protected my knees sufficiently certainly could not be as good as all the newer stuff. So I went on a quest and I've tried on about 6 other knee pads, but every time I tried on a different one, all I wanted to do was wear my old tried-and-true ones. So I ended up buying a third pair of the same ones, as they just work, they don't make me hot, I can slide them down to my ankles easily if it's especially hot out, but they have yet to move or slide in a crash. I love them.

    Great pads

    Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

It is hard to find pads to fit girls well. I like these because they have a little hard plastic over the cap and the XS size fit well too.

    Best guards on the market

    Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

I tried on a heap of guards as comfort was important. Found buying a size up fitted better. Really comfortable, and faily light, with good riding position. Can ride in these all day in 100% humidity and get no chaffing. Good coverage. Have the matching elbow guards. Some stitching has frayed, but still keeping shape.

    The only option for women

    Familiarity:
    I've used it several times

As a 5'4'' woman, the xs Troy Lee stuff is pretty much all I can wear. But, the stuff is great so it's not too much of an issue. It's just annoying that nothing else is designed for women.

    Comfortable lightweight pad

    Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

I was always on the hunt for a lightweight, super ventilated and comfortable knee pad that still offered decent protection. For me, these have been perfect for several seasons. They always stay in place even during warm weather, and they have held up even when I bailed onto them a few times over the years. Make sure you get a good snug fit since there are no straps and enjoy!

    Success!

    Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

I'm amazed at how these don't squeeze my legs, but somehow stay up. They literally do not move. It's easy to forget they are there. I have relatively small legs so it's great that TLD offers and XS version. Thanks, guys!

great light weight throw in your pack

    Familiarity:
    I've used it several times

I use to never wear knee guards, but after a few crashes I decided to find some light weight guards I could throw in the camel bak and only put them on when I'm about to do a decent decent. I haven't crashed with them *yet* but as far as comfort while riding they are better than expected even when doing some climbing. I pretty much always carry them in my pack now if there is going to be any decent downhill on the ride...

Protection value seems a bit suspect

    Familiarity:
    I've used it several times

These work as advertised and are a light weight, not too hot, trail knee pad that can be worn where climbing may be involved. The padding on the knee is small and a little suspect. Fortunately, I haven't had to test these yet. I'm concerned about their ability to stay in place during a fall.

    Versatile Knee Pad

These are my go to knee pads. Super lightweight, easy to pedal in, and fairly protective. This is a great pad for trail riding to freeride. The silicon on the knee really holds them in place so there is no need for straps. These are awesome for everything except maybe the burliest of DH tracks.
