Sending it like a boss and landing on your face doesn't necessarily mean you'll need to spend a few months sipping burgers through a straw if you were clever enough to pull the Troy Lee Designs D3 Composite Helmet over your dome before you sent it. The D3 Composite is the same as the top-shelf D3 Carbon, but as the name suggests, features a shell made from composite instead of superlight carbon. It ditches the standard adjustment dials and straps in favor of a near-custom incremental sizing system, so you're virtually guaranteed a helmet that nestles snugly around your dome, regardless of whether the dome in question happens to be enormous, petite, or somewhere in between.
The outline of the D3 is the same as the old D2, but Troy Lee rejiggered the shape to improve its fit and feel. There's more EPS foam in the frontal areas, so you'll be safer when you face plant, and the new 3D cheek pads are contoured to fit around your jaw and lovely mug for a more secure fit and better protection. Troy Lee also redesigned the visor and front trim with smoother edges for a sleeker look.
Riding around with a head covered in 15lbs of protection isn't really feasible, but the D3's shell is made from a composite material that's seriously strong and surprisingly light. Dual-density shock pads line the helmet and absorb smaller impacts, so you won't crack the primary EPS liner in a little fall and have to buy yourself a new lid. The D3's removable, washable liner incorporates Coolmax and Dri-Lex technologies, which wick moisture, cool your dome, and fight odor. A host of 20 vents pulls air across your head and forces it out the back for efficient cooling, the adjustable visor is held in place with titanium hardwear (and can be swapped out for the included second option), and the corrosion-resistant D-ring fastener cinches the D3 around your chin to keep it from bouncing off when you go a little bit bigger than you planned.

- EPS foam protects front of your head
- 3D cheek pads provide a contoured fit around your jaw

- Adjustable visor and D-ring fastener lend a customizable fit

Hard to beat
- Familiarity: I've used it several times
- Fit: True to size
- Size Bought: Small
Fantastic helmet that looks great and fits even better. Very supportive padding and a very protective and strong helmet. Vents better then you think and is a helmet, if you are used to full faced helmets, than you can wear all day
My Favorite Full Face Helmet
- Fit: True to size
I've used several helmets over the years and I keep coming back to the D3.
They're super light, have great vents, and are super comfortable.
I love the fit, but my favorite aspect of this helmet is the ventilation, no fullface is going to be comparable to a 1/2 shell, but it's noticeably better than most full face helmets on the market. You'll notice that a lot of EWS racers wear this helmet, that says a lot to me about the ventilation/ protection combo.
I actually think the Composite version of the D3 has the best paint jobs, even better than the higher end carbon version.
Great fit
- Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
A little heavier than the carbon but also cheaper. Same great fit though. Tons of colors to choose from as well.
