A masterpiece of versatility.

It's been a while since the folks at Troy Lee Designs designed and built an all-mountain helmet. As is always the case with TLD, they came out with a bang. The A-1 Helmet is a definite departure from the Troy Lee norm, but it's built with TLD's legendary attention to detail and durability.

The first thing you notice about the A-1 is its sculpted, almost artistic shape. More than simple aesthetics, the shape of the A-1 increases air flow through the helmet to keep your head dry and cool. This is especially important when you're grinding out a punishing climb in the heat of the summer. Airflow is directed through 16 cooling vents–6 intake, 4 multi-directional, and 6 output vents. The shape of the visor, which can be adjusted a full inch on the fly, was also dictated by airflow. Moisture management is assisted by a nanowick synthetic liner with CoolMax panels.

The durable polycarbonate shell surrounds single-impact EPS foam for light weight and proven protection. The visor is made with high-impact polypropylene for additional eye protection. Troy Lee used super-durable anodized aluminum hardware throughout the A-1's construction. The A-1's customizable fit is taken care of by triple-position stabilizer baskets and a multi-position cam-lock adjustable stabilizer with +/- 20mm of movement.

The Troy Lee Designs A-1 Helmet comes in three sizes: XS/S, M/L, and XL/XXL. It is available in Gold and Black.

  • Multi-position cams for optimal fit
  • Fuller-coverage helmet
  • 16 big vents for airflow

Safe and Stylish

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This helmet is the perfect compromise of comfort, safety, and looks in my opinion. The comfort aspect is definitely a personal thing since we all have different shaped heads, but overall I have loved this helmet. Stays put very well with no bouncing around and no visor flopping, and feels very safe compared to my more XC style helmet I used to have. Still fine for super hot days though, not overkill.

My one complaint is that while you can adjust it one handed while riding, the dial on the back is not the easiest to use. It works just fine so I don't care, but for the premium price Troy Lee charges I would expect a more thought out design. Again, not something that would deter me from buying again just some feedback in case anyone out there cares.

Best Helmet I Have Ever Worn

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Hands down the nicest helmet I have ever worn. The fit is unlike and other and it also vents very well while having great coverage. Also comes in many different colors for any style you're looking for.

Great helmet, great company

Love the helmet, looks great and super comfortable. After a year the liner was starting to show some wear and they didn't have replacements in stock - contacted TLD and they are shipping me a new one at no charge. Wish I got that level of customer service from all companies!

I'll keep it around

The pad set on this helmet is probably the best out there. It's soft, thick, and doesn't flatten out immediately. Fit is superb and, for me, it doesn't have any odd pressure points. The micro-adjust dial retention system allows you to get the perfect fit in seconds.

The straps could use some work. It's almost as if there are too many adjustment options to the point that finding the perfect position becomes quite the task. The straps in the buckle seem to come loose quite frequently, too, unless you keep it too tight around your chin to where it's forced to stay in place.

Overall, it's a solid helmet with features I would expect at this price point.

So comfortable

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

From the first moment I tried this helmet on I was in love with the fit. It looks good, and wicks sweat away decently. I haven't needed it for protection yet, but I am sure it would do its job in the event of a crash.

So comfortable

Hi! Is the visor adjustable? Does it move up & down or is it set in one position? Thanks!

Hi Manuel,

Yes, the visor does adjust up and down so you can position it where you want it.

the backup spot in my helmet rotation

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

The A1 is comfortable, stylish, and feels like it would be great in a crash (seriously, you put this helmet on and think, "If I crash, THIS is the helmet I want to be wearing), but in the So Cal summers it feels a bit hot and heavy. I don't know how anyone is calling this helmet light, much less super light. Even the small weighs 320+ grams. And depending on where you live, your opinion of the ventilation will vary, but here the A1 is hot, just hot. And sweaty, like squeezing out buckets from my forehead onto my shades sweaty.

It is seeing much more action now that fall and winter are here, but has not taken over the starting spot in my helmet rotation. That honor still goes to my sleeper pick, the Catlike Leaf; it is light. well ventilated, super comfy, and holds sweat well.

I would still recommend the A1 to anyone, and there always seems to be a sale on them.

Love This Helmet

There's a reason you see so many of these on the trail; it's a comfortable, well-designed helmet and one of the best looking on the market. The A-1 offers plenty of coverage, protecting the side and rear of your noggin, while still maintaining a low profile so you don't look like a mushroom. The cinch system is spot-on, using a small dial that can be easily adjusted with one hand while riding. You can get this thing snug. This is not the most ventilated helmet I've ever owned, even in white I found myself sweating more than in my previous 661 Recon. May it's the increased coverage the A-1 provides, but just something to be aware of.

Thank you troy lee!

What can i say this is the best helmet on the market. You dont believe me look below. 15 feet to my head and i walked away with just a bruised shoulder. Every other helmet i have tried just doesn't fit as well as this one. Its coverage is perfect and the protection is unmatched. I also really enjoy the 16 vents as they do a great job keeping you cool on the trail. it also weighs nothing so if you arent getting this helmet you are missing out. The real question is if you want to go MIPS or non MIPS. If you have any questions or need help with sizing reach out anytime!!

Thank you troy lee!

It's the A1, nothing more to say

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

It's the A1, what else can I say? It's one of the best trail helmets on the market, tired and true for the past several years. Plenty of cool colors to choose from. The padding and shape of the helmet makes it very comfortable. It's lightweight and well-ventilated. You really can't go wrong with this helmet considering others cost twice as much or more.

My head measures about 23 inches, so sort of in between M/L and XL/XXL.. should I go with the M/L? I dont want it bouncing around but I also obviously don't want it too small

Hi Ben,

I would always error on the small side with something like this. Better off having the helmet all the way opened up as opposed to totally cranked down. If the size you decide to go with doesn't work, let me know and I can help you out with an exchange. Feel free to reach out with any other questions. - Matthew Pizza - Expert Gearhead

Super Comfortable

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Fits snug to my dome and is lightweight. Only thing I don't like are the straps. I haven't yet found a way to get them to fit perfectly.

The Most Comfortable Helmet Ever

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: M/L

This is the most comfortable half shell ever. Apart from feeling like a ball cap, it breathes great, and has the rad troy lee styling. Some of the colors are a little over the top, but you can get the drone edition. I have also crashed really bad, and I am still here, so more evidence that it rocks.

Stellar Half Shell

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: M/L

Lets face it , half shells can look and feel a bit terrible. The Troy Lee A1 however does not disappoint. Not only in my opinion does it look great but it also performs incredible.

It is very comfortable and does not have any pressure points or uncomfortable spots at all. Worth every penny.

I have not found this helmet unusually warm at all.
