Gateway Pro 3-Bike Rack

The classic family vacation wouldn’t be complete without the fleet of bikes riding out back on a swing-arm rack. The familiar image of Thule’s foldable, clamshell Gateway Pro 3-Bike Rack is own we can conjure up in our heads. The rack suits the week-long family vacation over the holiday or the cycling racer who gets to escape for a three-day stage race with the A, B, and TT bikes. The Gateway Pro’s ease of design and install — not to mention storage — make it a favorite for those who don’t want a roof mount, and would rather not lose out on high dollars for a hitch install. Unfold the Gateway and brace its soft feet against the back of the car, secure the bracing straps at specific car-frame mounting points, and unfold the carry arms to meet your bike’s needs. The Gateway Pro’s straps can tuck away for tidy storage and avoid scuffing bike and car paint. An ample seven-inches of spacing is available between each bike, accommodating a variety of bike size, types, and handlebar widths. And to secure the bikes for transport or while fueling up in the roadside diner, the integrated rack-to-bike cable lock secures the most outboard bike, which prevents the others from being victims. An option Thule Lock Strap for rack-to-car securing is sold separately.

Great Product - Instruction could be better.

Had been struggling to find a 3 bike car rack that didn't need a trailer hitch and would fit a VW Tiguan. Used the website tool to determine whether it would fit my vehicle and found it would so ordered it. Purchase and shipping tracking worked well and it arrived about a week later at the post office. Got around to giving a try to install it one week later. The instructions are not great particularly viz a viz the anti-sway support that is on one of the two bike frame supports and it folds down 90 degrees. Fortunately there were YouTube videos that set me straight. It is simple to install after the first time and holds the bikes firmly in place. I have 3 bikes with 56 and 58 frame sizes and it's plenty roomy. Highly recommend!

The Worst Installation Instructions of All Time

Simply the worst instruction booklet I have ever seen. No directions on how to access the Fit Guide. Bleh.

Great features, easily assembled

I've been using my Gateway to carry an EZ Rider recumbent. None of the hitch mount carriers I've found can accommodate recumbent wheel-bases so this is perfect!

Light, but a pain in the butt

I opted for the 3 bike option and, unless I remove the pedals off all my bikes, I will never be able to fit three bikes on the rack. Not only would the bike closest to my car scratch my car, it's already a tight squeeze with 2 bikes on the 3 bike option. The system is also really difficult to fit on most mountain bikes because the support buckles are so large, which is super unfortunate. We ended up having to get another bike because one of our mountain bikes was completely impossible to get on the rack because it's frame wasn't the standard "triangle" Thule assumes it is. It is also a huge pain that there is no built in way to lock it to your car (and the car lock Thule sells separately can be easily cut), so we have to disassemble it and put it away in our car every time we go on a trip so that we can be sure it isn't easily stolen. That's a big pain too. All that said, I'm glad I got this as it is going the job for now. But, I will likely consider upgrading to something more expensive because I am also pretty disappointed. Bought the Thule Gateway Pro 3 for a 2010 chevy cobalt.

Didn’t last 1 ride

I had this installed by my bike shop. The straps popped off and scratched my car. I then couldn’t get the tightened off the bike, had to cut it. Livid.

Tie-down straps fell out on first trip

I forgot to tie the straps together that I wasn't using, and they fell out. Now I'm trying to find replacement straps, but getting these exact ones is proving kinda hard. Not recommended for this simple, but perhaps costly, annoyance.

Disappointed with our first Thule experience.

Not really anything wrong with the bike rack per se, but in the instruction booklet half the pages were blank/missing and there are missing pieces on the rack. On the underside of three of the bike rests, the covers were not installed.

A Little Insecure

Bought the Gateway Pro 3...the bikes fit, but the bottom rubber supports which sit on the bumper split apart after 2 months. Now, a towel wrapped around the bottom is the replacement. Sadly so, on many occassions, a longer drive means that the bottom hooks come loose-it only takes few bumps in the road. Nothing has fallen off, but the feeling of insecurity as a driver lingers.

Damaged my car

I bought this rack, installed it correctly and when I opened my truck the top fasteners gouged my car. They are rounded which means they don’t tuck out of the way. I have had other bike racks that have never done this!

Easy Installation/ Very Durable

I bought this bike rack about 2 weeks ago to use for an upcoming trip and future adventures. I transported 2 Bikes 197 Miles holding a constant 75 MPH. There were no issues with the Bike Rack or any damage to my vehicle. I drive a 2018 Nissan Rogue the Bike Rack was easy to install and did not limit my view. The Bikes were sturdy and did not move a single inch both ways for my trip. I highly recommend this Bike Rack as it's affordable and easy to use.
