ThomsonX4 Stem
Item # THP000A
The Thomson X4 Stem drops weight by using a more traditional split clamp for the steerer interface, rather than an internal wedge. The sculpted stem relies on sleek clamp bolts, and, true to Thomson's design ethos, the X4 is CNC machined from 7000 series aluminum alloy.
The stem has a 31.8mm clamp diameter and comes in Black or Silver. The Thomson X4 Stem is available with a zero- (90) or 10-degree (100) rise, with lengths ranging from 50mm to 130mm.
- 7000-series aluminum
- Sculpted stem and sleek clamp bolts
- Split clamp design
- 31.8mm clamp diameter

As all bike shop employees know, Thompson stems and seatposts are simply the finest made. They are the benchmark. Top of the line 7000 series aircraft quality aluminum alloy. Hand made and machined by Thompson in Macon, Georgia, USA. This Thompson Elite X4 stem at 50-60 mm for MTB is insanely strong and a functional work of art for MTB.

The X4 is the only stem I've used for the last 10 years. Super bomber, does the job, and looks good. Highly recommend.

Sturdy and amazing quality, but a bit heavy compared to the competition.

If funds are no object, you should get an enve stem. In terms of weight, stiffness, and looks, its the best on the market. For everyone else, the Thomson stem is all you'll ever need. Strong, high quality, lightweight-ish, but only a fraction of the cost. A good stem is one that you dont notice when riding, and thats what Thomson is to me.

What else can I say? Thomson makes the highest quality parts for what ever kind of bike you are building. All of their stuff looks so good together. Extremely durable and still very light. Definitely worth it.

After drooling over so many so many beautiful bikes clad in Thomson cockpit parts at the North American Handbuilt Bicycle Show (NAHBS), I had to have my own. The little ridges on the stem really add a nice detail to the overall presentation on your bike, and it is light as well. Few things class up a bike like Thomson.

Thomson is the state of the art in extruded aluminum - the quality and craftsmanship is top notch. Compared to the Enve stem on my other whip the Thomson stem feels stiffer and more precise while remaining comparable in weight. Not sure what I can add other than Thomson products are truly amazing!

Thomson components have had a reputation of being some of the best in the business and this is no different. The quality and finish are excellent, and the stem is available in pretty much every length imaginable. I'm gonna knock it down one star because the bolts require a 3mm allen. I'm assuming this is to prevent over tightening, but from my perspective its just a total pain when i work on my bike considering I already have to use a 4mm and 5mm.

The best for the 31.8 crowd.

I needed to change my position up on the new rig, and this thing is what the doctor ordered. Going back to 31.8 bars to save the hands after 35's beat me up all the time. This is the workhorse stem, and people will definitely nod in acknowledgement that you are running the best. This is probably my 7th or 8th Thomson stem in the last 7 years.

Bike jewelry--get some

I've purchased more than a dozen Thomson stems over the years. The X4 is the workhorse mountain bike stem. It just oozes quality, fit, finish. Never had one fail (full disclosure--never had any stem fail). They are light enough, look great and with choice of zero or 10 degree rise, you're almost always certain to get the cockpit dialed where you want it. If you're into color coordinated bling for your bike, look for the colored faceplates (purchase separately) that are available to dress up your ride even more.

Thomson make best stem I've used so far and I have one on all my bikes. This is a set and forget component on your bike. Beautiful craftsmanship by Thomson. I've beaten it up either fully rigid or suspension and it keeps ticking. Mountain or road you probably cant go any better for performance and price.

I think we've covered it: light, stiff and gorgeous. Just make sure you hit those bolts with a torque wrench! Seen a few broken face plates over the years from over torquing. There is no need for silverbacking those bolts on a stem this precise and refined.

What can you say about the Thomson X4 stem. It's an extremely reliable high quality stem. Any bike I've ever had, has immediately been changed to a Thomson stem.

It's not the only stem worth running, but you won't find one that's better. Light, stiff, burly, elegant, plenty of sizes -- there's not much to dislike about the X4.

Works great for a road bike too!
To get my desired drop, I needed a zero rise stem, and Thomson fit the bill. There aren't many zero stems out there.

It’s machined aluminum and not “extruded” right? Or am I wrong?
