The irony isn't lost on us that after decades of developing perhaps the most solid seatposts in the industry, Thomson has stepped into an arena where now the seatpost must be deformable at the push of a button. Up for the challenge, of course, Thomson refused to concede any of its well-established seatpost market share to other companies that just shoved a shock into their extant designs, so it made a fantastic dropper post. Now, the Covert Elite Dropper Seatpost takes its proven Elite Dropper and makes it compatible with internally-routed frames.

Keep in mind, too, that this is the same company that gets contracted by NASA to craft parts for aerospace machines, so when it came to develop a relatively complicated (for a seatpost) dropper post, Thomson cut zero corners: custom-made Norglide bearing bushings, custom-made Trelleborg O-rings and seals, and Motul oils join forced with Thomson's proven seatpost clamp to make for a design that is peerless in quality and refinement. The one-piece forged internal post has no moving parts that could fail, and cam actuation means smooth and precise articulation of seat height at the rider's control. Cables are employed, rather than hydraulics, which Thomson says reduces weight and complication while also boosting reliability. The remote lever features short travel and is the smallest available on any dropper post on the market — and speaking of which, Thomson's dropper posts pass all EN strength and fatigue tests, while many of its competitors do not.

The Thomson Covert Elite Dropper Seatpost weighs 592 grams, including remote lever, cable, and housing. The entire post is 400mm long but shrinks/travels 125mm from full extension. It features a 5mm offset, comes only in Black, and is available in 30.9mm and 31.6mm diameters.

    Replace the trigger

    I've put it through the wringer

    It's been exactly 6 months and the cable has broke twice, same spot, at the trigger. First one was the Thompson cable installed at the shop. Second one was a Jagwire I installed. They are a pain to install. The trigger is poorly designed. Everything else about it is fantastic. I'm baffled why Thompson would build such an amazing product and ruin it with a crappy trigger. There's nothing more frustrating than getting halfway through your race and your dropper stops working, after you just replaced the cable 3 months ago. I look back to my Kind Shock LEV which was lighter, had more travel, cost less, and the cable/trigger never needed maintenance the 3 yrs I used it. Yes there was a little play in the saddle and yes it needed maintenance each year of hard racing, but it was super reliable. I miss that one.

    Thomson Covert Elite Dropper Seatpost

    I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

    After weeks of researching dropper posts, reading about failed ks, riders rebuilding reverbs, etc., and maybe months of mulling over options I finally decided to bite the bullet. This is a very well-made piece of hardware which I've used for 3 years and couldn't be happier that I decided to spend more on quality. You can see that serious thought was put into designing it. I still have a smooth range of adjustment, no sagging, no wobble, and rebound is snappy. It is expensive, but you get what you pay for. If you have the funds, give it a go.

    works like a dream 99% of the time

    I've put it through the wringer

    developed some play when i picked the bike up by the saddle while post was in the 'down' position. that sucked some air into the oil chamber. resulted in about 2 mm of play, but i could live with it. sent it in for service under warranty, experience was pleasant, quick, and the play was gone! then today i notice the post was slow to return to full extension, and then his happened! post pulled the top seal right out on extension. boooooo. as for ergonomics, i have the gen 2 lever. no complaints. it's great that you can unscrew the cable mount from the bottom of the post for easy removal from the frame. makes warrantying this sucker a snap! meanwhile the KS Lev Integra I've been loaning to a buddy for a year now has been going strong with nary a hiccup. hasn't even been serviced yet!

    Solid - Lives up to the Thomson Rep.

    I've used it several times

    Put one on my steel hardtail with full internal routing. It's still fairly early days but the post has zero wiggle and super smooth action. The clamp is typical Thomson strong and easy to set up. My one complaint would be the remote and the way cable management at the bar.

    I agree about the cable management issue with the lever. Mine was easily resolved using an old cantilever brake noodle. Routes the cable perfectly on the bars and looks real clean.


    the 400mm the entire length of the seat post and it drops 125 so the range is 275-400 correct?

    Hey Casey, You are right that the total length is 400mm, while the usable length is 300mm since you need at least 100 mm inside the frame to keep the seatpost attached. The minimum stack height is 188 mm from frame to saddle rail. Pretty much you can have your seat anywhere from 188-300 mm from your frame.     Silky smooth

    I've used it several times

    So smooth and the feel and ease the lever is better in my opinion than the KS. Had a KS LEV beofre this and wanted to get an internally routed dropper for my next post, but read many bad reviews about the LEV Integra, so went with Thompson. Have ridden it only for one month at this point, so will update if any problems, but so far I am very pleased.


    Can the Thomson covert dropper post accept carbon railed saddles?

    Yes. I am running them now on a Romin Evo Pro. You want to make sure that the rails of all seatposts are ovalized for the larger carbon rails. The other thing to watch out for is you need to be very careful about seatposts that clamp horizontally (parallel with the ground). The thomson seatpost clamps sit on top and below the rails (vertically) so the forces are not pinching the oval of the carbon rails.

    Solid Post

    I've put it through the wringer

    I've been happy with the post for more than a year now of heavy use on my Pivot mach 6 with all types of riding from full loops in the bobsled to the lift laps at the PC resorts. Just starting to get some notable front to back play, but I'd expect that from any post after a solid year of use.

    Covert Ops

    This seatpost mounts very clean and performs like all Thomson products: Flawless. The lever has a good feel to it and even has a machined out portion that hides the cable and cable end cleanly. Action is smooth and the rate of seat return is not too fast, and not too's just it doesn't punch your treasures.

    I'm more of fan of the fancy XX Reverb posts, but tried this one out b/c its a Thompson - works well, lever is easy to reach, and most importantly it doesn't have any side-to-side play. Cable action is light and drag free.
