Touring 8in Short

We've all got our favorite shorts for training rides, races, or local loops that top out at about three hours, but sometimes we want something that will last longer in the saddle, trading some flash for some comfort and functionality for long distance rides and touring. The Terry Bicycles Touring 8-inch Shorts are designed for those times.

The Touring 8-inch Shorts use the same fabric, Terry's fastest-drying material, as their predecessors, but with added elements of fit and function that benefit the touring cyclist. The front waist is elastic free, so it's less restrictive, and they include a new, long-distance chamois — both of which you'll appreciate on long days in the saddle. The fast-drying, easy-care fabric means that you can wash these during a multi-day cycling trip and they'll dry in time for the next leg. The Touring shorts also incorporate a zippered pocket, which is almost unheard of in cycling shorts and which frees up valuable jersey pocket space for snacks, a phone, and anything else you want quick access to from the saddle.

The Flex Air Tour insert is an upgrade in comfort from Terry's less substantial Flex Air chamois. The Flex Air Tour has the same seamless, four-way stretch construction, but it benefits from slightly more foam padding and uses Elastic Interface Technology to dial the insert's shape and function to your body's in-the-saddle needs, protecting the nerves and circulation areas that are most vulnerable while you're on the bike. The inner thigh portion of the insert is reduced to a minimalist microfiber fabric — in Terry's signature pink color — to reduce restrictive bulk and eliminate chafing.

  • A versatile short for multi-day trips and local rides alike
  • Fast-drying fabric keeps you comfortable for all-day rides
  • Flex Air Tour insert has additional padding for long days in the saddle
  • Elastic-free waistband sits comfortably without digging in

How to Measure:
For best results, take measurements over your underwear.
Measure under your arms, around the fullest part of your chest.
Measure around your natural waistline, keeping the tape a bit loose.
Measure around the fullest part of your body at the top of your legs.
To determine glove size, wrap a cloth measuring tape around the widest part of your hand, thumb excluded. Select size closest to your measurement, going up a size if you're in between.

Weird waist

Nice fabric. Pad felt on the thin side. Big complaint was the v shape on the waist band that did not work w my shape. Also leg grips were too big for my thighs and were loose fitting. Stay wanted to love these returning for something else.

Fits Way Large But Comfy

I've used it several times

By the Terry size chart I should be in the plus 2X size of the touring shorts, but reality is I fit a regular straight size XXL instead with just a little bit of compression overall (how I prefer my bike shorts). I am 5' 6", 230lbs with a 49" hip and 42" full belly after kids

Nice if they fit you

These are pretty nice shorts. They have the same pad as the Bella shorts, which are my go-to shorts by Terry. The material on these almost seemed like a light fleece on the inside. I didn't keep them though, because I found them to run a bit smaller than the Bella shorts, and lower in the rise. I would order the next size up, but I'm pretty sure they would be too big.

It's extremely difficult to find a bike short when your average pant size is a 14-16. Most XXL offerings are still made for a size 10 or 12. I was VERY happy to find these shorts from Terry. The length is perfect hitting a bit above the knee, but not so far up the thigh that you end up with "sausage links" and the waist band is a touch thick in back, but it lays smooth, and doesn't dig in. Seems to be one of the hardest things for designers to get right, so kudos to Terry for this! I generally wear a 14 or 16 bottoms depending on the brand (which would be a L or XL in Terry), but according to the size chart for waist and hip measurement I would be an XXL or larger in Terry. That is what I bought, and they fit great. I also love the matte fabric. It is soft and very comfortable. The chamois is a bit thick for my liking, but I understand this is a touring short! And for the record, I generally prefer almost no padding, and that is extremely hard to find, so I'm probably a weirdo anomaly in that preference. Take this with a grain of salt.

Love these touring shorts

I've put it through the wringer

Buying cycling shorts is such a personal thing, so it's difficult to write a review that's valuable for someone else as her needs may differ in small or significant ways from mine. With that said, I adore these Touring shorts from Terry. I've purchased many Terry products over the years, but these are my all-time favorite. I own these in both the 5 in. and the 8 in. length, but the 8 inch seem to be the best in regard to comfort. With the 5 in. I find that they tend to roll up on my meaty thighs when pedaling and I find myself needing to stop regularly to put them back in place. Even though I'm under 5'4", and the shorter length is probably more suited for my height, the 8 in don't roll up on me. The length hits a few inches above the knee (though this is likely due to my aforementioned thick thighs - for those with slimmer profiles, they may be longer). The material of these is a more matte fabric than is typically found on cycling shorts and also far more elastic, I've found. This, of course, makes them ideal for touring or long-distance bike adventures. While nothing can replace the comfort of a properly-fitting bib short, I find these to be a close second with lots of room to spare in the waist (which does run high on my body). Additionally, the gripper portion of the leg doesn't squeeze or create a sausage effect, which is fantastic. They wash well and can be worn for many cycling seasons. The padding is the flex-air tour chamois, which I find to be a nice balance between too thick and too thin. For the right purposes, these in my opinion are ideal shorts.
