Suunto Spartan Ultra Heart Rate Monitor $524.30
Take training to entirely new realms.
Taking advanced GPS navigation and sport-savvy metrics to an entirely new level of sophistication, the Suunto Spartan Ultra Heart Rate Monitor features 80 sport modes alongside Heatmap navigation of common activity routes. The included Smart Sensor feeds accurate heart rate metrics to the watch in real-time with its Bluetooth Smart capabilities. For keeping tabs on your personal performance and viewing areas for improvement, the Spartan Ultra syncs with Suunto's Movescount app. This computer and smartphone-based app (check specs for compatibility) compares your personal metrics against the best athletes in your age category, also working as a training program for your favorite sports and athletic disciplines.
One of the watch's biggest selling points is the vast amount of supported sport profiles, ranging from common sports like running, swimming, and cycling to adventure activities, such as ski touring and hiking. Real-time metrics like pace, speed, distance, altitude, heart rate, and calories are delivered on an easy-to-read color display. Recovery time and feeling trends keep tabs on your body's limits, letting you know when you're ready for that next set of intervals or high-cadence training ride. As a convenient bonus for daily use, there's a 24/7 activity tracker with steps taken and calories burned.
The integrated GPS receiver features GLONASS tracking for faster acquisition of satellites, meaning you won't have to wait for extended periods when you're locking onto a signal. Route planning is set-up with the Movescount app, which allows you to download routes for a variety of outdoor activities ahead of your intended trail run, bike ride, or open water swim. As you're navigating through your environment, the watch gives an accurate readout of current altitude, vertical speed on ascents, total ascent/descent stats, and temperature. These stats come in handy when you're moving across varying environments on ski tours, trail runs, and backcountry hikes.

- Familiarity: I've used it several times
For starters, I do agree with the other reviews knocking the functionality. It is not as mature as the Ambit series and while I was initially excited about the smart watch features, I have found them pretty unnecessary. I'm not entirely sure it has anything I couldn't get from the Ambit series, but that speaks more about my lifestyle rather than the watch.
Which I LOVE.
I love to train hard but often burn out because I'm a dummy about tracking my data. This watch keeps up with just about anything I might get up to. The running 24/7 calorie/step counter is great and so is the recovery tracker. Even on rest days I can wear the watch and get an estimate of my effort for the day. In addition to that, having a customizable training plan on the watch makes sure I can't avoid working towards my goals.
I have yet to get it out hiking so I can't speak to the GPS/altimeter features at this time. They track really well during a run around town, but I'll be curious to see if that holds up in the great outdoors.
Overall it is easy to use, the size is great and it is clear it was developed to make sure anyone can have their needs met regardless of the activity. I'm excited to see it improve as Suunto rolls out updates.
did not meet the potential
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
- Fit: True to size
I preordered. It has never met the expectations. It has yet to have all the functionality promised in the beginning. I have had such a terrible experience with their customer support that I've involved the BBB 3 times in the past year. Suunto will simply not respond to emails or calls. So if you are looking for a watch that may or may not have functionality this is it. Just forget that they have a customer support department.
Nice, good idea.....but....

Picture this. This multi sports watch seems to perform like a nice but very expensive C@sio watch with a fancy touch screen! The company had done few software updates. But, why pay a lot of money for a multi sports watch that is not yet mature fully? I’ve spoken with the manufacturer's customer support. They were not much of a help as they could not provide information on future updates! I’ve explained the problems as well. They could not answer some of my questions. This watch was not very accurate with its altitude at all!!! You could not check the altitude with its standalone GPS as you might with another multi sports watch. It relies on what they call "fusi altitude". It uses combination of GPS and barometric pressure. Then it relies on a reference altitude, meaning you must know what altitude you are at in order for it to read what you want it to tell you. I mean, what good is it when a GPS has capability of telling you that? The manufacturer has not put that capability in other than “auto calibrate” that seems to rely more or all on barometric pressure. The variances in numbers is not good at all. The GPS does not seem to pick up after being wide out in open outdoors! What good is it if you do not know what altitude it is where you are at? What’s more? The steps counter is way off! It would count like 500 to 1500 more steps compared to other step counter related products I’ve used in short period of time. I am sorry that I could not give good reviews. It is a very nice-looking watch with responsive touch screen but push buttons were not very responsive! It does have nice multi sports function that can be easy to navigate once you become familiar. I can go on and on. But, it is up to you if you want to try it out! It is really too bad since this manufacturer makes excellent scuba dive computers!
What a watch. It has all the bells and whistles of the Ambit 3 Peak (Customizable, Bluetooth HR, GPS) with an AWESOME, easy to use touch screen capability. You can compete with friends on their same routes using Movescount Heat Maps. Plan, progress, recover and share with. The built in pedometer and calorie burned tracker keeps your eye on achieving fitness goals even when you are stuck in the office. Definitely a must buy! http://www.runnersworld.com/gear-check/highlights-from-the-2016-summer-outdoor-retailer-expo/slide/7
