Disappointing
The threads on the lock ring were not adequate to engage with the hub on my wheel. I wouldn't bother commenting, but I had an old SunRace lock ring available and it worked just fine so it's not the wheel or the hub that is the problem here. I generally love Surly, but at this price point I didn't expect to have to swap out parts to get this to work. Mediocre at best...

Just to clarify, does this kit make a regular multi speed shimano hub into a fixed hub or into a free wheel hub?

So you want to convert your HG freehub body to single speed. This is about the easiest way to to do. Super clean, good looks and comes with everything you need other than the cog.

I bought these for my Surly Krampus and it was extremely easy dialing in the chain line and getting riding single speed. I am stoked I don't have a fancy/expensive derailleur hanging off the back of my bike anymore!

Ditching the gears? This is your answer

I love the variety of different spacer sizes they provide to really let you dial in that chainline. Once that is done, everything tightens down really well and my bike has been quiet and creak free for several years.

Dial It In
This kit works great to rid yourself of all those pesky gears and cables and to dial in that chainline. Well done Surly.

So stoked Backcountry has these!
I'm pretty obsessed with getting the right single speed gear for cross racing. I use Chris King cogs and am constantly battling my brake pad alignment, chain tension and tire clearance. I use two Surly tug nuts since I don't have a dedicated single speed hub and have to use a DT Swiss RWS QR. Two tools you will need in addition to the Surly Single Speed kit are a chain whip and a crombie tool. Here is a link to instructions on how to achieve a proper chain line: http://www.velodromeshop.net/index.php?p=page&page_id=chainline This kit comes complete with a lock ring.

It's the right thing to do

While I like seeing the shift from triple to double and now single front rings (seat tube derailleurs make me gag), I'm not sure what to think of the increasing number of "standard" rings spinning on the back half. I had a nightmare the other day about a 1/37 set up with a 101 tooth low gear. Stop the madness, throw your cassette in the trash and sore a set of these......and a 20 tooth single.

Single Speedin'
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
When I decided to build up a new single speed cross bike this year, I had a few options for spacer kits. Knowing that I was going to be running a Surly cog, it made perfect sense for me to just stick with the brand that is notorious for their SS rig setups. It was a super easy installation- well, once you get your chain line perfectly micro adjusted (gimme that 17 minutes of my life back!#@$), and then you're off pedalin' The only drawback I would say is its price, as it's about 10 to 15 bucks more than the other options out there.

I'm Building a single speed and needing to remove the cogs from a 10 cassette adding a new single speed 17 cog. The Surly spacer kit is awesome. This kit is a no brainier being the instruction make it pretty simple to figure out what spacer go were for the proper alignment.

Samboni, please be careful you should never use a cog from a cassette as it has ramps and good chance it will "throw" your chain.
