With the growing popularity of disc-equipped road bikes, cyclocross-specific wheelsets are enjoying increased compatibility across disciplines. Stan's NoTubes Grail Pro Disc Wheelset has emerged as a leader of the bunch, ready to tackle almost any surface. Whether you're grinding up long, paved mountain passes, embarking on a gravel metric, or dusting off the speedsuit for some fun in the mud, these wheels are up to the challenge with Stan's renowned tubeless reliability and an ability to handle a wide range of tire widths and pressures.
The Grails utilize Stan's trademark Bead Socket Technology (BST), tailored for compatibity with tires ranging from 25 to 40mm wide. The Grail's BST-R shape was designed specifically to handle narrower tires and higher tire pressures for a wider PSI range than standard BST rims. Similar to standard BST, BST-R features low profile sidewalls that provide a better seat for the tire bead and allow for a heap of benefits compared to standard rims with higher sidewalls. When setup as tubeless, BST provides one of the most secure tubeless seals we've ever used while allowing the tire to hold a greater volume of air than standard rims, many of which place the bead 2-4mm below the edge. This interface lets the tire maintain its full shape for a wider, more stable rolling platform.
Pairing BST with the ability to run up to 30% lower air pressure than on a standard clincher wheel results in more stability, better handling, solid cornering, and better overall control. These rims are also compatible with standard tubes, and the lower sidewall drastically reduces pinch flat risk by reducing the amount of material present for the tube to pinch against. This means less time with flats and more time turning the wheels, regardless of the terrain.
Stan's laces the Grail Pro rims to its new Neo Ultimate hub set, whose smooth-spinning, oversized stainless bearings glide on a stiff, strong, swaged axle. Like with the standard Neo, the Neo Ultimate holds the bearings at a wider stance for a claimed threefold increase in strength compared to other hub designs. The Neo Ultimate's pawl count is boosted to six, though, cutting the engagement angle from the standard Neo's ten degrees to a virtually instantaneous five degrees. Stan's builds in its new, laser-etched SealLock end caps for easy installation and Slip-Fit axle ends for easy conversion.
The Stan's Grail Pro Disc Wheelset comes complete with Stan's yellow rim tape and valves already installed for tubeless use. Each wheelset also includes quick-release endcaps and skewers. Please note that the Grail Pro Disc Wheelset has a maximum recommended rider weight of 190lbs and a maximum recommended tubeless tire pressure of 116 PSI with 23mm tires and 45 PSI with 32mm.
