Gen 3 Shimano Ultegra R8000 Single Leg Power Meter Crank Arm

Finding time to train can be trying in a world of 9-to-5 work life, family, and long commutes —not to mention wanting to have a well-rounded existence between friends, hobbies, and fitness. This juggling act can make finding the hours to train trying, so its important that you get the most out of what little time you may have. With the Stages Cycling Shimano Ultegra R8000 Single Leg Power Meter Crank Arm you'll find all of the data you want, without the price tag that destroys your annual upgrade budget, so you can push yourself harder to reach for gains. It collects data with its easy to install left-leg power meter to deliver tangible information and reliable numbers to improve your ride, and overall fitness.

The key behind this crank arm is the little power meter pod affixed to its inner face, which takes what originally was a standard Ultegra 8000 crank arm to the next level and adds the ability to gather pinpoint power data to better measure your ride. It utilizes a blend of strain gauges and an accelerometer to gather position and force data 64 times per second and deliver power readings with a claimed +/- 1.5% accuracy, half a percent more accurate than previous models, and right in line with what we'd expect from any quality power meter.

For the gram counters out there, the Stages meter adds a minuscule 15 grams to the crank arm, which is a tiny concession to gain the massive data tracking and training specificity having a power meter affords. To put it in perspective, choosing the smaller safety pins the next time you don a race number should easily balance things out. This crank runs off of a coincel battery, offering up to 200-hours of battery life. Since the meter sits externally on the crank it's easy to swap mid-season without tools. The meter its self is well encased, earning an IPX7 waterproof rating to give you peace of mind if a storm breaks out on race day. When stormy weather rolls in, or the changing seasons cause the temperature to fluctuate, you'll be happy to find that the power meter has active temperature compensation to continually calibrate to the dropping and rising mercury on your ride, continuing to provide you with accurate data.

Works Great

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I?ve ridden about 700 miles with this power meter. It works great. Haven?t had any trouble and I?m getting similar results to my SRAM eTap power meter, in most cases. I?d buy another, especially at the price compared to more expensive power meters.

Great value power meter... if it worked!

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

Wanted to have a power meter for my gravel bike (avid trainer with PM for my triathlon and road bike) and after careful studies, the Stages seemed a great option in terms of value for money. Unfortunately, I was never able to get it to work properly: the unit was reading my power very intermittently, but most of the time was not reading anything. Just did a 100k gravel ride yesterday and when all was done my reported average power was 1W, and my max average power over 20 minutes was 4W! Just not working unfortunately. The gen 3 was supposed to have fixed the random connectivity issues that were reported on earlier versions... not sure this is the case based on my individual experience but I am hoping this was just a faulty unit so I am considering buying the same again... just not 100% sure yet. On the plus side, installation is indeed extremely quick and easy.

Random shutoffs and unreliable

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

I want to like this power meter. But it has it's downfalls. I don't have a good way to judge it's accuracy since don't have another meter to compare it to for same ride analysis. What I have difficulty in making this a better rating is the reliability. There is no warning to you that battery is low. Simply find out when about to start a ride that battery is dead. Battery is EXTREMELY difficult to remove. It is wedged so tightly into its location that have to get creative with cards and paper in hopes can manage getting it out. It also has poor construction. Under the battery (the connection) is 3 very thin weak metal bits that stick up. Be careful not to touch these the wrong way, such as removing or replacing the difficult battery, or it will break. I have had 2 replaced for this exact reason. Lastly, the reliability which is my big kicker and I think biggest downfall. For no rhyme or reason if it gets jostled, knocked, completely random reason that no one seems to be able to explain, or simply stop and go again in same ride it WILL shutoff on you and not continue working any longer. I lost half power data for my race due to this MAJOR flaw. Bike was gently placed in car and taken out again during a transport point. When I started again 5 minutes later back on the bike my power was no longer reading. Being in a race and my main competitor only 1 mile ahead of my there was no time to stop and fiddle to attempt getting it working again. 3 days later when back on the bike again power meter was again working without issue recal firmware update or battery change. This has happened on multiple occasions and always in middle of a ride. Never at start or end when have time to stop and see if I can figure out what issue is. In my opinion though, I shouldn't have to do that.
