Training indoors has never been better.
While we would never trade an outdoor ride for an indoor one, sometimes our busy schedules or uncooperative weather forces us to pedal inside. And as much as we want to pedal our own sleek race machines on the trainer or rollers, we can't help but wonder if bolting the rear axle into a trainer and hammering away and dripping copious amounts of sweat on our beloved steed is doing it a favor. Enter the SC3 Indoor Bike from Stages Cycling offering a viable indoor machine with gym-level quality and all of the metric recording elements we seek. And just like its industry-lauded powermeters, the SC3 is engineered and assembled in Boulder, Colorado.
Many of us are familiar with Stages' powermeter crankarms, allowing you to upgrade your existing crankset with accurate power registering info without investing a ton of money or having to add weight to your bike. What many people don't know is Stages started off making powermeters for stationary bikes and the SC Indoor Bike is a natural progression for the brand providing serious cyclists with the tools to train indoors effectively. The SC3 provides everything you need for a smooth ride, that's easy to adjust while offering low-maintenance, and of course, is equipped with a Stages power meter.
The frame is constructed from 6061 T-6 aluminum alloy that's hydro and air formed and TIG welded. Stainless steel hardware is used throughout and the frame is finished with an industrial powder coat. Stages backs up the frame with a 15-year warranty and you'll feel a lot better thrashing about on this machine than on your lightweight carbon race bike.
Most spin bikes only have one means of adjusting the resistance. Not the SC3. It offers magnetic resistance adjustment in two ways for a truly custom experience. Stages SprintShift enables instantaneous macro-level resistance changes allowing you to quickly jump into and out of an interval with a three-stage lever that you can customize, letting you focus on the intensity and duration instead. Within those macro zones is the ability to make micro adjustments letting you fine tune exactly what zone you need to be in for your prescribed workout.
Stages partners with fellow Colorado brand Gates for its carbon fiber drive belt known as Carbonglyde. Not only does this setup provide a more realistic road feel, it's more efficient, requires fewer adjustments and is longer wearing than the commonly used poly-v belts on the market. The 5:1 gear ratio and high-inertia, cast-iron flywheel drive system offers super smooth pedaling.
One of our favorite features is the EcoScrn console. It uses a dynamo so it runs off of your own power letting you see metrics in real time. It's always backlit making it easy to view numbers under different lighting even while cross-eyed during an interval. The workout data is then transferred to a USB drive for further analysis or to send to your coach. Of course, you can always sync up to your Bluetooth 4.0 or ANT+ enabled sport devices including iOS and Android compatible apps if you choose.
Dialing in the fit of the SC3 to that of your daily driver is quick and easy with Stages FitLoc adjustment. It offers a secure ride and if you're not the only family member using it, the adjustments are 5-times faster than the industry standard twist-to-lock system, so you quickly get right to your workout. Stages claims the SC3 will fit riders ranging from 4ft 10in - 6ft 10in. Even the included RoadBar feels more like your bikes handlebar versus the commonly used bullhorn bars, offering a host of different hand positions. Additionally, the q-factor is 156mm which also better replicates that of your road bike.
Stages Cycling power meters are among some of our favorites partially because the quality and precision of each and every meter exceed our expectation, and the accuracy is exactly as it claims. By capturing forces at the crank, the accuracy is within +/- 2.5%. This feedback provides more effective training and allows you to get greater gains in performance. Just 2 standard AA batteries provide 2300 hours of ride time.
