SRAM is always pushing the boundaries of what components can do. Whether it be lightweight cassettes or burly chains, SRAM makes components that are made to be dragged through the mud and come out ready to do it again the next day. Continuing this spirit of innovation is SRAM's new XX1 group. With 11-speeds, the group works flawlessly for all disciplines of mountain biking, with the most indispensable feature being the XX1 XG-1199 Cassette.

At first, the cassette body might have you puzzled. Where's the lockring? In order to make room for the 11th sprocket, SRAM eliminated the lockring in favor of its XD driver body. With the cassette threading at the base of the freehub body, it creates a stabler connection between the hub and the cassette. And by using the same installation tool that SRAM has relied on for years, this seemingly complicated cassette is actually easier to maintenance than any 10-speed. Though you may find yourself marveling at the XX1 design, its engagement and mud clearance outshines its looks.

It's important to note that the XX1 cassette requires the use of a distinct freehub body. However, on a bright note, SRAM estimates that its new XD driver body is around six to eight grams lighter than a standard freehub body. For now, the XD driver body is available from three sources -- SRAM, Mavic, and DT Swiss, so you still have top-tier options for a new, XX1-compatible wheelset.

The XX1 XG-1199 Cassette is available in a 10-42 range and is only compatible with the SRAM XD driver body. Manufacturers currently offering freehubs compatible with the XD driver body include SRAM, DT Swiss, and Industry 9.

If you're looking for a light group, then look no further. This group is lighter than Eagle. This cassette last a really long time.

Super light and super sexy

While I use a XTR 1x11 drivetrain, I prefer this Sram cassette since it offers lighter weight and better range than the Shimano offerings. Additionally, I prefer this model over the cheaper Sram options as this raw finish does not show wear nearly as fast as the black options.

Works with XTR di2.

This is a nice cassette, works as advertised. Even works as not advertised. I have it set up 1x11 with XTR di2 derailleur and ultegra shifters, and it shifts flawlessly.

Got this for my brother-in-law for his Niner RKT bike frame. He is a major bike enthusiast. I could try to paraphrase his review, but he knows more about bikes than I ever will. Here's what he said:

The 10 by 42 teeth make a huge difference over the competition. Great design I haven't had any issues. This is my second setup I tried switching to the competitions but was not impressed.

Got this to convert to the 1X11 set up. Very happy with the ratio and the change. No noise or creaking and the chain is happy.

Very cool, Gear Range is Adequate

Perfectly adequate range for straight MTBing, but you''ll miss a bit on the top end of the range with a 32-tooth chainring. So don't expect to keep up with a fast group on the road. Also, beware you get the right tool with adequate inside clearance if you have a 12mm thru axle, and torque to spec, else you will get nasty creaking.

I don't think top end will be an issue for most with that brilliant 10 tooth cog in the rear.

32 up front and 10 in the rear is almost the same gear ratio as 36 up front and a traditional 11 in the back. Yeah, you won't keep up with a fast group on a road ride but that would be your tires holding you back just as much with this on a mountain bike.

Great Ratios

    The gearing was well thought out. I rarely run out of gears. The 1x11 set up feel super efficient and I feel like I am always riding in the sweet spot. I love not needing to shift up front to keep moving forward.

    This cassette is beautiful, all machined from the same piece of metal. It looks really good and is very light. The only thing I noticed the first few rides I took on it is that I felt like I was missing some gear ratios that I was used to. I ride with a 32 tooth chain ring up front and on long climbs I felt like I was in too hard or too easy of a gear. Now I am used to it and my legs have adapted so I know the ratios better and love it once again. Don't be discouraged if you aren't instantly faster. Once you adapt to it will come.     Hi Nate, I noticed on the product description that it states the cogs are made from aluminum, while it is my understanding that the first 10 cogs are machined from a single piece of steel while only the 42 tooth cog is aluminum. Might be good to clear that up in the description as the idea of a full cog set made of soft aluminum may be scaring some buyers off.

    Sexy Machining, Maybe Gen 1 Issues

    When you look at this cassette, it is amazing. I beleive the 10 smallest rings are made out of one chunk of alluminum, and the big ring is attached. Though maybe all 11 are the same piece. I have an enduro/all mountain/freeride style, and the gearing on this is schweet. i've never felt like i needed a bigger or smaller ring. if you were riding cross country, you'd want a bigger ring than the stock 32 up front.

    After the derailleur is dialed in, shifting is NEARLY flawless, though normally it really is perfect.

    I recently went on a dusty, 50 mile ride. during the second half, the chain and cassette would make a creaking sound when i was climbing in the big ring. it was an exceptionally dusty ride though. I just wonder if maybe the chain is cross-loaded too much. time will tell.

    currently i'm psyched on the whole system, and it suits my style perfectly.

    I believe the 10 smallest cogs are steel and the biggest is Alu.
    All aluminum would really have a short life! The way they described it on the Competitive Cyclist site here is rather confusing.

    The BEST DRIVETRAIN on the market

      It is crazy how large this cassete is, it dwarfs the front chain ring, but it is truly machined perfection.

      I made the switch to XX1 this year (2013) and I am in love, I have been a long time X.0 user and have always thought the SRAM solution was unbeatable. But getting rid of the front derailleur and having such a wide range of gearing options in just 11 gears is absolute perfection. I can't imagine ever going back to the old system.
