In the never ending conundrum of one-by gearing choices, we've spent many a day opting for ten-tooth speed only to end up grinding over merciless grades and wishing that an extra climbing gear could somehow fly out of the sky and save us in our time of knee-breaking need. With a massive gear range across 12 cogs, SRAM's Eagle drivetrain swoops in to save the day and provide nearly the range of a two-by system in a simple one-by setup. The SRAM X01 Eagle 12-Speed Rear Derailleur ties the system together, driving precise gear changes across the entire cassette with a titanium spring and durable, forged aluminum body.

Similar to SRAM's 11-speed offerings, this little derailleur borrows a boatload of technology from its flagship XX1 sibling to create a budget-friendly, clean-shifting ride experience. The Roller Bearing Clutch, long revered for its nearly unbeatable chain stabilization, gets an update with a repositioned upper pulley and larger lower pulley to accommodate the extra chain length needed to run such a wide range of cogs. Paired with a strengthened clutch, it efficiently manages chain tension to eliminate derailleur bounce and chain slap for a solid, noise-free ride.

The X-Horizon feature further boosts this stability by limiting the derailleur's shifting movement across the horizontal axis, with its large upper pulley design maintaining a constant chain gap across the cassette. This effectively reduces shift initiation force and eliminates pesky ghost shifting, so you'll drop into the right gear with minimal effort the second you want it.

Last, but by far not the least, is SRAM's Exact Actuation technology addresses the issue of different gears requiring different amounts of cable pull to shift, which leads to loud cassettes and inefficient shifting. With Exact Actuation, each gear shift requires the same amount of cable pull, resulting in a predictable click and shift no matter where the chain sits in the cassette. This also means an overall quieter, better adjusted drivetrain for predictable shifting in any situation.

Shredding trails inevitably involves a mechanical or three, and the X01 Eagle 12-Speed Rear Derailleur makes the ensuing wheel swaps and maintenance easier with an update to SRAM's Cage Lock functionality that sees the lock pin tucked a bit more out of the way for additional protection from impact. Its overall functionality remains the same—just push the derailleur forward and it locks into place for quick and easy rear wheel removal or installation to get back out on the course in a snap.

Is the weight accurate?.
It seems to be way much lighter than xx1 derailleur

Gear range overshadowed by flimsy design

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I really hate to give a negative review, but I feel that this derailleur deserves it. Yes the range is great. The shifting performance does not seem as good as my 9 speed setup, but it is acceptable. The slow shifting is probably due to the wide range of the gearing. The real problem is that this thing is way too flimsy for a $225 component. First ride and a tiny twig gets jammed in the bottom pulley and the chain gets wedged between the pulley teeth and one of the plates that holds the pulleys. In 20+ years of riding I had never seen a chain get knocked off of the pulley like that. I assumed that it was a fluke. This happened a couple more times during the ride and continued to happen about every other ride. In some cases the chain would be wedged so tightly that the cranks completely locked up. The worst thing that happened was when the derailleur got forced into the spokes of my new Enve rear wheel. After this incident my derailleur was bent and my shifting was horrible. I bought the Park DAG and a couple new derailleur hangers. The original hanger was just barely bent. I bought the SRAM derailleur repair kit. This kit replaces the pulleys and the inner plate. The derailleur was still bent and the outer plate can't easily be straightened and I don't think it can be replaced. I bit the bullet and bought a new derailleur. I got 3 rides out of the second derailleur before another tiny twig knocked the chain off of the lower pulley and this derailleur got bent. Note that I have ridden some trails with big rocks and logs and never had a problem. The problem appears to be that the space between the plates is wide enough that the chain can easily jump off track and get wedged between the pulley and the plates. All it takes is a stick that is small enough to fit between the pulley guide plates and your derailleur is ruined.

Gear range overshadowed by flimsy design

Same exact thing happened to my GX. Cranks seized up and chain is off the pulley wheel. Derailleur hangs super low too, especially on a 27.5, so twigs are going to happen. It's a pretty good rig, just too prone to damage.

Love this thing!

Changed my biking life. Shifts great and looks great too. Climbing with this thing is a dream especially when I hoping that I have one more gear on the really steep stuff. I just put the X01 Eagle groupset on my Hightower LT and it is flawless! Paired it with the Jagwire Pro Shift Cable Kit and it is working great!

Great Derailleur

I've had the XO1 group set on an SB6 and now on an SB5.5 and love the group set.

This shifts real easily and is super smooth between gears.

What a piece of art this thing is! When I unboxed it I wasn't sure whether to put it on my bike or my mantle. The fit and finish is truly stunning and second to none. Sram has truly changed the way my bike climbs and descends.

Very nice

    Very nice craftsmanship in this derailleur. All the machining and finish makes for a nice setup. Either have your LBS setup, or take great care in setting this up yourself. Aside from the high price point, there’s not much to complain about with the X01 setup. This is also a very quiet setup in shifting up and down.

    Pair this sucker up with the appropriate SRAM 12 speed bits and you've got a killer drivetrain. This shifter is quick, engages well, and accurately. 10/10.

      This Derailleur, paired with the rest of the appropriate bits, offers smooth shifting over a HUGE spread of gears. The system has been really good so far, just might take a bit longer to get the rear derailleur tuned in compared to other systems. I've found it's picky on the chain length. Once dialed in though shifting has been nice and crisp.

      What can be said about the new Sram eagle group other than it is excellent! Smooth shifting, light weight, durable, huge gear ratio, and being able to run a larger ring up front without losing your climbing abilities? What's not to love? I have been a die hard Shimano user for the last few years, and though I still think Shimano is great, eagle has definitely converted me over.

        Makes every climb doable, this derailluer was a little finicky to get setup, cable tension is key. Once I got it dialed I was in love.

        I went from a 32 in the front on my 1x11 to a 36 in the front with eagle and the math says I still got an easier granny gear. Nuts!

        I have been loving the new SRAM X01 Eagle drivetrain. It has performed with minimal maintenance—not recommended—and helped pursue my passion to ride diverse terrain with one bike. With any new technology in the bike world, there is a cost to getting on the newest and greatest advancements—the Eagle is fresh to the market and currently the only 1x12 drivetrain available—and the price tag reflects the exclusivity. Per usual, prices do tend to drop after time (although there is no concrete evidence of that happening anytime soon). However, even as is, I think the price tag associated with the new 1x12 systems is well worth the money and will only increase any on-trail experience and offer a whole new range to you daily ride.

        The cage is long to accommodate the 50t but it tucks in very close to the wheel. Shifts are precise.

        I recently built up a new bike with Eagle X01. I've been a 1x convert for a couple of years, and the addition of the 50t cog allows me to ride a larger front chain ring without sacrificing the bail-out gear. The shifting is smooth and precise but my favorite feature of SRAM rear derailleurs is the locking mechanism. It makes removing your rear wheel quick and easy.

        This stuff has been great. I used their 1x11 drivetrain basically since it came out, and the new Eagle 1x12 is perfect for me because I get the same cassette and gear ratios with a massive 50t cog attached which works great if I hit a steep digger. The new derailleur is awesome, shifts are crisp and precise, and I've noticed lower noise from the jockey wheels than the previous 1x11 stuff.

        The extra gear you have been wishing for is finally here. Now you have a 50tooth bail out gear for those long and hard climbs. I personally jumped up to a 36 tooth chain ring to have a larger gear. With that 36 tooth, when the chain is in the 50 tooth gear it is still easier than when I had 34 tooth.
