They break; over and over
- I've put it through the wringer
I have a Look 695, fully SRAM equipped. Since 2012 I have had 7, yes 7 SRAM Red rear derailleurs blow apart while I was riding. Number 7 was today; I was riding my rollers and the unit shot cage parts across the room. The cage was actually broken into several parts by the guiltless chain. So: The pivot pin that holds the cage on the derailleur body uses a primitive "mushroom" flange that is retained by a long screw. Over a few thousand miles the screw wears down the flange; then the cage erupts from the bike, often destroying the chain, etc. I don't want to replace all my parts, so I'm ordering a Force 22. At least when IT explodes, I won't be watching $250 + dollars lying on the road/floor/etc.

Just had exactly the same thing happen to mine after about 15K miles. Not an isolated thing, and the design makes it inevitable.

I've been through 3 rear derailleurs myself...exactly as you described. I put some miles on them, however the primitive mushroom flange definitely appears to be the weak link. I also had several pulleys crack over the years.

What is the difference between short and medium cage? This is an upgrade for my TT bike. Thanks
