PG-1170 Cassette
SRAM's new PG-1170 Cassette was built to give you smooth, quiet, and accurate shifting across all 11 of its cogs. The cassette was engineered to seamlessly pair with SRAM's new Force 22 group, and it includes the addition of a 16T cog neatly tucked into the cassette's profile. This 16T is now the linking cog that delivers better cadence control and smoother shifting as you hover within the middle block of the 11-speed cassette.
The PG-1170 Cassette was constructed using SRAM's semi-spidered design to provide you with a cassette that's both stiff and exceptionally lightweight. Each cog was made from heat-treated steel, which results in a durable cluster that runs near silent and maintains exceptional mud-clearing capabilities.
SRAM incorporated its X-Glide shifting technology, which shapes the teeth and cogs to provide the ultimate in quick, positive shifting. Compared to its Powerglide cassettes, this goes just a notch above. The difference is how quickly the teeth pick up the chain on the downshifts. All of the cogs, save for the largest alloy cog, are cut as short as possible to eliminate flex between the teeth and the point where they're riveted to their next largest neighbor.
SRAM improved exactly where it needed, and the new SRAM Force 22 PG-1170 Cassette is a true upgrade to its previous PG-1070 while still remaining faithful to the SRAM Force pedigree. For smooth and flawless shifting across SRAM's machined X-Glide cassette teeth, SRAM recommends using its PC-1170 Chain. The cassette also includes an anodized, laser-etched aluminum lockring. Please note that the PG-1170 Cassette will only fit 11-speed compatible hub/freehub bodies.

SRAM + Backcountry = RAD!!!

I know the other guys make good cassettes (and great fishing poles too!?!), but I’m a SRAM guy, and always will be! The PG-1170 11-36 is the perfect pie-plate for the long steep climbs around my house, and getting it quick from Backcountry at a good price is all a middle aged man in lycra can ask for. Amateur Tip: This 11-36 cassette paired with a Wolftooth Roadlink may not impress the mechanics at your LBS, but they will pair up just fine with pretty much any setup you’ve got to give you the mechanical advantage you need to make your local suckfest climb suck just a little bit less.

Trying this before a new gravel crank

With a 50/34 crank and 11-34 rear, I wanted just a bit more bottom on my 105 group gravel bike, and shimanos 11-34 cassette tooth count increments never felt right to me. The 11-36 SRAM cassette is much cheaper option to start with over converting to grx 48/31 cranks - contrary to what Shimano says, the SRAM 11-36 plays nicely with a 105 (7000) long cage RD, just a small B adjustment and it shifts perfectly through all gears. Just a quick pavement ride so far, but seems to be exactly what I was looking for. Update- after a 50 mile backwoods gravel ride with plenty of steep climbs this performs perfectly and has the extra low I needed to keep a reasonable cadence up the ridiculously steep climbs, and the gear spacing across the cassette feels great. With this I won’t need to swap out the sub compact road crank and spend money on a “gravel specific” crank. For others in my situation this is an excellent option to try.

Wrong cassette (10 speed) sent 3 times
Received cassette in 1170 box with 11-32 "x" but the actual cassette was a 10-speed. Luckily, customer service was great with returning and sending new ones, however after 3 I told them to just refund. Wish I had some compensation for driving (hour total) to UPS store to return 3 items. Seems more a SRAM problem than CC problem, to be fair.

I'm getting a wheelset built, and the builder does not have access to a Shimano/Sram 11sp road freehub body. The builder has suggested that a Shimano-compatible 8/9/10/11 speed MTB freehub ought to work with this cassette. Does this require a strictly 11 speed road freehub body or can the 8/9/10/11 speed Shimano MTB freehub body work too? Thanks!

Where I live there are some hills nowhere like in the mountain stages of the tours. This 11-32 SRAM cassette is a perfect match with the Force 1 GXP 52 crank for me, where I ride and my style it suits me fine. With 11 gears more then enough for the hills and speed on the flats. Great price.

This may be a redundant question but - - I have a Shimano ultra medium cage drivetrain 11-32 cassette. I am looking for a larger capacity cassette - would this Sram PG1170. 11-36" work? Thank You

Great cassette, durable, and much better price than a Red cassette. Lasts a decent time for road riding.

quality casette 11-25
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times
I bought this for my road bike; This is the 1170, Sram force. Excellent quality as it is usual for SRAM. Way cheaper than the RED 22 casette (dont see the point of spending over $250 in a casette). 11-25 with standard rings is enough for the flats Free fast shipping by Backcountry with a 15% discount

I currently am running the SRAM 1170 11-32 cassette with complete SRAM Force 22 drivetrain and 50/34 chainrings. Is it possible to run the 1170 11-36 cassette with the addition of the Wolftooth RoadLink?

Can I run the 1170 36t cassette with the Force 22 50-34 groupo without any further modifications as long as I have the correct derailleur cage length?

Hi James, the SRAM website says this: "11-36 option is only compatible with SRAM Road 1x medium and long cage derailleurs." which probably means it doesn't work with a Force 22 groupset. See here for more detail: https://www.sram.com/sram/road/products/pg-1170-cassette

I bought this for a bigger range for climbing, it is doing the trick. It has been quiet and shifted admirably.

worth it

This cassette performs just how it should. I can make my chain slip on a PG-1150 cassette if I try hard enough, but I cannot do that with the PG-1170 using the same chain.

Dependable, smooth shifting, quiet. The usual "no issues" with SRAM components. Solid cassette at a great price and it survived the Almanzo in the rain.

My bike has the medium cage derailleur, will I have any issues if I put on an 11-28 cassette? Do I need a new chain?

Same here. I had an 11-26 on mine. I swapped out for an 11-28 and I did not need to replace the chain. Try it on your work stand first to make sure youndon't rip the derailleur off the hanger.

No, in fact, 28 teeth is the max for short-cage derailleurs. But if your previous low gear was a lot smaller (like 23 teeth) make sure your chain is long enough.

I bought the Ridley X-fire a couple months ago from here with Force CX-1. Front 42T and rear 11-28 with 116 link chain. I'm doing a race with lots of steep climbing. Looking to buy the PG-1170 11-36T. Will I need a new chain too? Thanks

Yes, and you may need to change the derailleur to a mid cage or a large cage, both should work. Look at: http://www.parktool.com/blog/repair-help/chain-length-sizing#article-section-1

Yes, a 120 link, and you will need a longer rear derailleur as well.

Love it!
When paired with the the cx1 group set you will be an unstoppable force when on the CX course or on a gravel grinding adventure. The 36 tooth granny is perfect to get up and over the steepest climbs.

Hi Phil, Anecdotally, all the 11-speed road cassettes are interchangable. Shimano, Campy, and SRAM cassettes all function with the competition's deraileurs and chains. But why not get the cassette that was designed to work with the drivetrain you have? Its in stock here: http://www.competitivecyclist.com/shimano-ultegra-6800-cassette

Thanks Mike, reason i ask is I have a Sram 11 speed equipped bike and Shimano 11 speed bike, tired of changing the cassettes all the time when I want to use a shared wheel set :D But yes will check out your link Phil

I want to ask the same question. PG1170 goes up to 11/36 where CS-6800 max out at 11/32 which I already have on my bike(compact double 50/34). If I want even lower gear for those 10%+ grades, I need 11/34 or 11/36. That's where PG1170 11/36 comes in. Now the only missing part in this 6800 11spd drivetrain with a PG1170 11/36 setup is the WolfTooth Road Link derailleur hanger extension. A $22 part. Problem solved. http://www.wolftoothcomponents.com/collections/cassette-cogs/products/roadlink

Phil, did you follow through with this? I was under the impression that the medium cage Shimano (I have 5800) would handle the 11-36 with no mods. What were your results? Thanks

The 11th cog is attached to the back of the cassette for shipping. You have to take it off the back and put it onto the front of the cassette.`
