Last year, SRAM set the standard for hydraulic road braking when it stepped into the road disc ring. While this system featured unparalleled braking power and modulation compared to standard rim brakes, it wasn't without hiccups. For this year, SRAM updates the group with a few tweaks to improve braking consistency and reliability and solidify its spot as one of the big hitters in the new road disc braking game. The SRAM Force 22 Hydraulic Lever and Disc Brake Caliper Set pairs these updates with a dose of top-end shifting technology from SRAM's Red 22 group to bring us awesome braking power in a slightly heavier package at a much more wallet-friendly price.
The main difference between the Red version and Force version is in shift lever materials. Force features alloy shift levers in contrast to Red's carbon, with stainless steel hardware in place of Red's titanium. Aside from those details, the Force system closely mimics the operation of Red and offers high-end touches such as carbon brake levers, ergonomically-shaped hoods, and Individual Reach Adjust to customize the braking experience to your specific reach. The brake calipers also feature a low force requirement for quick and easy braking so you never have to worry whether or not your brakes will engage.
The brakes themselves feature a caliper and piston ratio specially designed to get the most out of braking performance in road or cyclocross conditions, along with an updated spring that provides smoother traction and better pad contact than the previous version. With a fully sealed system, you can ride through rain, mud, and any other terrain with confidence that nothing will contaminate the lines and inhibit braking. When you do need to clean things out, the Force system features easy bleed access to get maintenance done and get you back out on the bike quickly.
To complete the system, the Force 22 Hydraulic Lever and Disc Brake Caliper Set comes with SRAM's Centerline Rotors, with venting lines in the braking track to reduce overheating and further improve braking consistency. These rotors also feature a 12-spoke design that reduces lateral bending or warping under heat stress for a stable, predictable, smooth braking experience every time you pull the lever.
