The single chainring cyclocross setup carries with it a decades-old tradition of converting doubles to one-by setups with a stack of shorter bolts, a few hours spent fiddling with chain lines, and a heap of hoping it would work out for the best. With the launch of its CX1 groupset last season, SRAM ushered this popular setup into the mainstream by eliminating all the hurdles to achieving a perfect single-ring drivetrain. This year, SRAM expands the one-by line with its new Force 1 system, boasting phenomenal cyclocross functionality that crosses over just as well to road and gravel bikes. The Force 1 BB30 Crankset sits at the center of the group, driving forward with a clean chain line and exceptional chain retention.
The crank arms are fashioned from light, stiff, unidirectional carbon fiber for swift, efficient power transfer and sharp responsiveness. At the center, a forged alloy spider provides a durable-yet-lightweight anchor while the SRAM X-SYNC chainring brings some extra chain retention features to the table to make this crankset really hum.
X-Sync chainrings feature a distinctly tall and squared-off tooth shape that catches the chain earlier in the pedal rotation than standard, triangular teeth for improved chain stability and retention. The teeth's narrow, sharp profiles and rounded chamfer edges also help with chain retention, especially in minimizing chain deflection. SRAM also keeps the oft-muddy conditions of 'cross in mind: recesses help clear mud to move the chain swiftly through its rotation for smooth power transfer that reduces catches and mud suck.
The SRAM Force 1 BB30 Crankset is available in a 110 or 130mm bolt circle diameter, each with several chainring size options to allow riders to maximize the ride experience based on their specific gearing needs.
