Frankenstein's tights.

Just in time for Halloween, the mad scientists at Sportful have offered us the Frankenstein of cold-weather tights: the R&D Bib Tights. With garments like the BodyFit Pro Thermal Bib Tights, we've already seen some impressive stuff from Sportful. The R&D distinguishes itself by offering a little bit of everything, harvesting technology and techniques from every different line of cycling clothing that Sportful offers in order to build a monstrously effective pair of tights. The R&D Bib Tights use a base of ThermoDrytex Double with ThermoDrytex PL+ on the thighs and knees, which is not to be confused with ThermoDrytex Plus, which makes up the back.

ThermoDrytex Double fabric is the trump card of the ThermoDrytex line, so we'll start there. Its outer face is nylon with a water-resistant finish; the inside is lined with fleece made with hollow core yarn. The key to ThermoDrytex Plus' wicking and insulating is found in the center of the yarn — or rather, it's not found there. The hollow core traps warm air and wicks moisture away from your body, regulating your temperature and keeping you dry, which in turn keeps you out riding. The back of the R&Ds is made of ThermoDrytex Plus brushed fleece fabric, which offers less protection than the Double but more flexibility. Since the rear isn't leading into the wind, Sportful used a material that offers more flexibility and a bit of ventilation, just in case you start to overheat. The parts that do lead into the wind get a special treatment, the ThermoDrytex PL+. The R&Ds are the only non-hats that use this fabric, and it's limited to the knees and thighs because it blocks wind extremely well while still wicking moisture.

The tights boast a TC Pro insert, which is a more streamlined version of Sportful's Total Comfort chamois, which has a variable geography of dimpled foam thicknesses to conform, support, and transfer moisture. Compared to the Total Comfort insert, the thickness of the TC Pro is reduced in the back and middle, but boosted in the front. This design is meant to accommodate riders who spend most of their time tilted forward rather than sitting upright, benefiting cyclists with an aggressive frame geometry and riding style. The edges of the chamois are "pressed to zero." This translates directly to "no chafing," a feature that riders who have spent a rough two weeks in November getting used to the chamois on their winter tights will appreciate almost immediately.

The zippered ankles keep the cuffs tight after you've pulled them over your feet. They also include reflective piping to help keep you visible in low-light situations. The Total Comfort bib straps reduce bulk and let you control the type and amount of torso layering, and the flatlock stitching eliminates chafing.

The Sportful R&D Bib Tights are available in seven sizes ranging from X-Small to XXX-Large in the color Black.

Fantastic!

I own a lot of Castelli gear (some Giordana, Capo too; all good stuff of course). I usually ride in Assos bib shorts (s7_Equipe or s7_Cento). But...

Wow. These Sportful R&D tights are my new favorite bib tights for riding in cold, dry weather! And by a significant margin.

They feature great function, looks, fit, quality & QC, awesome wide ventilated bib straps, and the TC Pro chamois/insert is absolutely fantastic -one of the very best in the business. I have ridden these down to 35-38° F, no problem.

Sportful is based in the foothills of the Italian Alps. They have worked with and supplied UCI pro teams for years and currently team Tinkoff-SaxoBank and reigning world champion Peter Sagan. Sportful knows winter cycling.

I think these Sportful R&D bibtights may be one of the best things they make.

Sizing: I say size-up +1. I am 5'10" and 185. The XL fit me perfectly. Like a glove in every direction. Plenty of length in the leg (could even fit a taller rider, say up to 6'1").

    Bravo Sportful!

Longer straps would make it 5 stars

Great tights with a great chamois. The straps are a bit tight (I'm 5'9" and wear a large). They're not as bad as the Castelli sorpasso wind tights I tried, and I don't really notice them after I get going on a ride.

    Good purchase

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I purchased a large and feel like the sizing chart was accurate. I am 6' with a 33" waist and 185 lbs and the large fits well.

I have worn these bib tights on two rides of 25 and 33 miles. They are very comfortable especially with the fleece lining and the chamois gives adequate cushioning. I could feel the cold on my one ride that was in the upper 30's, but they kept me toasty on my other ride that was in the 40's.

Only negative is these bibs fit very snug around the ankle/calf area. This causes the zipper to rub on my ankle and becomes uncomfortable at the end of my rides. I wear short socks and am sure a longer pair would fix the problem.

    Overall pleased with the purchase.

    Amazing!

I still can't get over how well the entire R&D line from Sportful works. Truly advanced fabrics and construction that will change the way you dress.

I was a bit apprehensive wearing these at first. They are fairly thin. Temps were I ride have been in the mid to high 20's lately..windy.

In the past I usually didn't venture out in those temps without tights with "Windblocker" or some type of additional leg warmers underneath.

To my surprise, I have needed none of these things. I have worn these by themselves down to 24 degrees and never even felt chilled. You just have to trust the fabric technology..

I would venture to guess that with leg warmers, you could extend the range of these down into the upper teens.

Also, check out the R&D jacket from Sportful as well....awesome piece of kit!!
