Take a wider stance.

There are a lot of pedal options on the market, but very few of them have the step-and-clip ease of entry you get with Speedplay's Zero Stainless Pedals with Walkable Cleats - Custom Spindle. Identical in design to Speedplay's renowned Zero Stainless Pedals, these Zeros are available with longer spindles for riders whose body geometry requires a wider stance for proper hip and knee alignment.

As with all Zeros, these pedals maintain the traditional feel of a fixed system while incorporating the well-known advantages of Speedplay X Pedal Systems. Dual-sided entry offers light weight, easy engagement and disengagement, and a low 11.5mm stack height keeps your foot close to the pedal for efficient power transfer. The engagement mechanism doesn't rely on spring tension for retention, so you don't have to crank down a tension adjuster to prevent inadvertent release. And perhaps best of all, microadjustable float lets you dial in desired cleat movement anywhere between fixed up to 15 degrees.

Speedplay's Walkable Cleats take the edge off the awkward endeavor of walking in cycling shoes. Their integrated rubber housing stays on while riding and provides much appreciated grip on smooth café tiles and concrete walkways. The housing also protects the metal part of the cleat from wear, and has a low profile that allows a natural, comfortable gait. The cleats also have removable rubber cover plugs called Cleat Buddies that snap into the cleat cavity to seal out dirt while unclipped.

  • A dual-sided road pedal with longer spindles for a wider stance
  • 59 or 65mm spindle options widen stance over standard 53mm length
  • Adjustable float ranging from fixed up to 15 degrees
  • Rubber housing protects cleat from wear
  • Compatible with all standard three- and four-hole shoes

An overlooked option

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

It's an extremely flexible pedal with different spindle lengths that allow you to adjust from 15 degrees down to 0 float. It's amazing to be able to set the float different on each shoe according to how you pedal and how your feet move. If you want something you can adjust very specifically to your feet, I can't see another option. Also, I've come from spd to spd-sl. The spd-sl as we all know, toe kick and then clip in. With spd, just clip in. Same with speedplay, just clip in but with a wider base than spd. It's the best of both worlds, spd and spd-sl without the initial toe kick.

I agree the pedals are great and the variable spindle lengths are something people don't pay enough attention to and don't match their q-angle properly. These allow that. I'd note they are high maintenance compared to other options and if you are really strong they cleats can wear more quickly than most other options but all in all worth it.
