Speedplay Zero Pavé Stainless With Walkable Cleats $299.00
Race ready, pavé preferred.
From the cobbled classics of Flanders to the Giro, the Speedplay Zero Pavé Stainless pedals with Walkable Cleats dominate throughout the peloton. Originally designed for professional riders, we're not surprised to see how well loved they are as they're received by the masses. With a minimalist design, improved aerodynamics, and a secure platform for transferring the most power possible to the cranks, we're loving them, too. The Zero Pavé pedals skip out on any excess, non-essential materials that make up the bulk of many pedals, instead opting for a not-so traditional appearance with an incredibly open design that manages to line up with mountain bike pedal's ability to shed mud and water that can cause other road pedals to jam. And while the benefit of shedding debris is exceptional, the added bonus is a lighter weight pedal that drives through corners and powers up HC-grade climbs.
Speedplay pedals earn their reputation for exceptional performance a number of ways. One of our favorites is their locking mechanism, which foregoes the standard spring tension to secure you into place, and opts instead for a true locking mechanism that is easy to clip into on either side of the pedal, and prevents accidental clip-outs. The Zero Pavé Stainless pedals allow between zero and 15-degrees of float that you can fine tune to the ideal degree for you, and furthermore, the foot-axis adjustments can be set independently of one another, meaning that either the fore-aft, side to side, or rotational adjustments can be made without affecting the position of your foot among the other two options. The Stainless version of the Zero Pavé provide shaves height on your stack, but weighs in a bit over the Titanium edition, due to the increased weight of material, and slightly longer 53-millimeter spindle. They come in at 115-grams a piece, weighing in 21-grams heavier per pedal than their titanium counterparts. Just as in the titanium model, the Zero Pavé Stainless use three cartridge needle bearings, allowing for a lower stack heart between 8.5-millimeters (4 bolt mount) and 11.5-millimeters (3 bolt mount). While their cornering clearance isn't quite as significant as their shorter-spindled siblings, they still boast an impressive 37-degrees of clearance for pedaling through corners that have others coasting.
As with other Speedplay pedals, the Zero Pavé Stainless engage into the cleat with metal-to-metal contact, as opposed to the plastic we see on many other pedals, which Speedplay claims to ensure a more secure hold, with extended durability over its competitors. This particular model comes along with walkable cleats that feature a grippy, rubberized tread to improve off-bike functionality, and prevent wear on the cleats. Speedplay's walkable cleats are designed to improve aerodynamics, with a contoured shape and dimpled surface that glides through the air. The cleats are compatible with a 3-bolt or 4-bolt road shoe, though with a 3-bolt shoe they will sit with a slightly higher stack, as they require the use of an included plate between your shoe and cleat.
