Speedplay's Walkable Cleat Protector Shim Kit is essentially a washer for your Walkable Cleats. It sits between the cleats and carbon racing soles to minimize the damage to the carbon's finish and keep the cleat stationary while you tighten the bolts. Each kit includes two shims that are only compatible with Speedplay's Walkable Cleats. Please note that neither the mounting hardware nor the cleats themselves are included.

Form meets function
- Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
I have a pair that has been on my Sidi Genius 6.6 Speedplay shoes since Jan. 2013. Bulletproof!
I agree, should be included with cleats, and/or, at a minimum Speed Play specific shoes - regardless of the manufacturer. However, this is simply not reality...
BTW, this part has absolutely nothing to do with protection from water/mud or road debris.

These aren't a total necessity, but seem a useful addition in keeping mud and guck out of the nooks and crannies under your cleats.
Should have been included with cleats
- Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
These thin metal pieces need to be installed between Speedplay cleats and carbon shoe soles to prevent the pedals from chewing up the shoe. Meager as they are I think they should come with the cleats. Or better yet, the cleats should be redesigned not to need them. My shoes have markings on the sole to help position the cleats which are hidden by these plates. That said, they seem to work as intended. An enterprising person could probably make their own by cutting up an empty beer can
I agree, should have come with the cleats. Forget about using an aluminum can as a substitute for the real item. The metal is too soft. It will wear through in about 20 clip in and outs. You don't need to ask how I know (if you know what I mean).
