Description

Why We Like The S-Works Prevail II Vent + ANGi MIPS Helmet

We've long considered the Specialized Prevail to be one of the best all-around road helmets on the market, so when we finally got our hands on the lighter and more breathable S-Works Prevail II Vent, we knew we had a winner. By removing a total of seven foam bridges from the center and sides of the helmet, the Prevail II Vent is able to move fresh air across the rider's head 18% faster than the previous model. This is a welcome feature for climbers, sprinters, those of us living in warm climates, and those of us who run hot no matter the ride.

While the Prevail II Vent is lightweight and highly-ventilated, but it also ranks among at the top of its class for protective features. It touts a 5-star rating from the Virginia Tech Helmet Rating Institute, a rare feature among cycling helmets. This is attributable to the advanced MIPS SL protection system that offers the same level of protection as other MIPS systems at a fraction of the weight, as well as the ANGi crash sensor that's capable of alerting your emergency contacts if you take a crash and need immediate medical assistance.

  • Stay cool & protected with this lightweight, breathable road helmet
  • Moves air across your head 18% faster than the original Prevail II
  • Carbon-aramid shell is seriously light and strong
  • ANGi crash sensor alerts loved ones and EMS if there's a problem
  • MIPS SL offers advanced protection at a fraction of the weight
  • 5-star Virgina Tech Rating is among the best in the industry
  • Tri-Fix web splitter improves comfort and ease of adjustment
  • Energy-optimize EPS foam helps to effectively manage impact energy

The Prevail II Vent is the clear winner for breathability; hands down. I have used several different helmets including the Giro Aether Mips and the previous Prevail and if you are looking for lightweight and venting, this one is simply unrivaled. I use the Prevail II Vent for hot days days when I'm riding at slower pace like gravel rides or road days with long climbs. For typical road days, I use the Specialized Evade and although that helmet breathes well, there is no comparison, especially on long, hot climbs. The helmet adjusts well with the dial but also adjusts for fore/aft positioning, allowing ample room on your forehead for larger frame sunglasses. (A lot of helmets don't do this). The chin straps are comfortable and simple to adjust. There is ample padding inside the helmet and It prevents sweat from dripping down my forehead. Negatives? It does sit slightly higher on your head but not so much that it looks abnormal. Also, It lets a lot of sunlight onto your head so if you have thin hair or are bald, you may want to wear sunscreen or a lightweight skullcap. ANGI is a nice feature if you dont have a Garmin with Live track or like me, and live where a lot of rides are not within cell coverage.

Breathable & safe

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

These are first impressions, but after a few rides, i couldn't be happier. As in the name 'vent' its breathable. And it also hits my highest standard of safety. Im coming from the Giro aether which is also a very great helmet, super safe, and fairly breathable. the con to the aether is that it is a little heavy and after long hours on the bike it can be noticable. The Prevail vent however is super light, at least 2x as breathable and it has ANGI technology. I honestly don't see a reason not to get this helmet! My head is 60 CM and I got a large.

I had the previous generation of this helmet and when the 'fit system' on it broke, I looked around at others and ended up getting this next gen version, with ANGi. Ultimately the fit and lightness of the helmet are very good. That was true of its predecessor as well and mainly why I bought again. It remains true with this product. And I like how well the system works to tighten or loosen the fit. The minor annoyances: the straps are a lightweight material and generally that is good but once you're in the 30-40mph range they can begin to vibrate in the breeze. On the previous generation I ended up literally stapling the strap in the middle and that solved it. The ANGi crash detection gizmo is something I am using now even though my Garmin essentially was already providing 'incident detection'. No complaints with it other than the app tends to use a LOT of iPhone battery power. On my iPhone the Ride app is consistently at the top of the list of battery usage.

I am a sweaty human when I am on the bike and am constantly dealing with sweat coming down the brim of helmets and onto my glasses. The Prevail II Vent has done a great job and I am dealing less and less with sweat coming down the front of my face! The venting is 2nd to none. I don't think I have ever felt the breeze coming thru a helmet like this. I also always check out the Va Tech helmet safety ratings and the Prevail II Vent received a 5-star rating. It is incredibly light so to see that the protection is there is mind-blowing Specialized did a great job. This helmet did fit a bit larger than other Specialized helmets in the past, but the plastic fit adjustments in the frame of the helmet helped get the correct fit along with the dial. If you are looking for a super lightweight and extremely breathable helmet, then look no further! PS I have a 59cm noggin and went with a large.

Hot Headed?

Hot Head? Cool it off with a Prevail II Vent. I've only ridden this helmet for a few months now but so far but I'm very impressed. I can't wait to climb some mountains this summer to really test its ventilation. I can already tell this helmet will be my go-to lid for this riding reason. For the medium, it weighs in at 268g with the ANGi crash sensor. Pretty awesome! You can also easily stash sunglasses in the vent holes for when you are cranking up a 20%er or when it gets too dark for sunglasses. The sizing chart worked for me and the medium fits perfectly so I'd say it's true to size. My head sweats A LOT so the more vents the better. I've found that I still need to wear a headband when the temps warm-up and I'm climbing mountains for hours at a time to avoid sweat pouring into my eyes. I've not found a helmet that can contain my sweat though so I can't say it's a flaw. Even with a headband, my head remains cool and comfortable. I dig the style and the venting. Specialized created a winner!

Air Conditioning

This helmet is a game changer in terms of ventilation. The little bridges that replace traditional foam and plastic create massive open channels for air to flow through. I've worn this helmet so far on a couple of spring-like days and felt a major difference in amount of air flow over my head, like I was wearing an air conditioner. Details from the original Prevail - its light weight and excellent retention system - are carried over here, and made the helmet really comfortable and secure from the first wear. Due to its extreme ventilation, this helmet will leave you a bit chilly if its your only lid on colder days. However, this helmet makes a great addition to your kit if you're looking for every advantage you can get on hot days. For reference, my head measures 22" around, and I wear a size Medium.

With all of the hype that is surrounding that ANGI system, I found that out that really, all you have, is a small tracker inside the helmet that is designed to notify the next of kin, or whomever, in case of a crash. We all hope that we can prove that the helmet doesn't work buy avoiding a crash and not having the beacon send out a notice! The beacon system is finicky in first getting it activated as you have to twist a small round knob in order to activate it with the included battery. I wasn't able to do so initially and I inadvertently lifted the beacon off of its base which, in the instructions, says that by doing so the beacon may not work properly and thus may not send out the proper message to the designated contacts. Lastly, the helmet is a tad bit larger in circumference than all other helmets that I have owned so I find it drooping down somewhat and I have to lift it up off of my sunglasses. Really not that exciting of of a helmet for the hype that's been put into it.
