Lightweight Stiff XC/Gravel Option

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer
Size Bought:
43
Height:
5' 11"
Weight:
165

Shoes fit great, I was worried about breathability, but these did just fine in the 105 degree heat of the Sarlac Pit at Crusher. Overall the shoes are what I expected, a very lightweight, stiff XC and Gravel shoe option. The rear pull tab is a joke and will tear off if you actually use it to pull the shoe on, but a minor issue compared to the shoes overall quality construction.

Super light, but flawed

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

Bought these for three single speed cross country races this year. Very light and first impression is they have slipper-like comfort. Wasn't sure they would offer enough support for hard out of the saddle efforts, but they felt great, no problem with support. Upon trying on the shoes for the first time, a pull on each of the heel tabs ripped them off. The tear was clean and didn't compromise the shoe, so I wasn't too concerned. 5 minutes into the first ride and there was irritation to the top side area of my foot along the cuff area of the shoe. The problem is cuff trim that doesn't extend all the way round the opening and ends with sharp edges. The tongue is close to covering the sharp edge, but for my foot, it doesn't. For now, I've sent them back to Specialized, but would try them again if the cuff trim is revised.

Updated - Broke trying on

Familiarity:
I returned this product before using it

These run a full size bigger than Sidi. Normally a 46.5 in Sidi and I could wear a 45 or 45.5 in these shoes. Not sure why Specialized has such a hard time measuring things. Their mtb tires run a full size smaller than advertised, too. Their 2.35 tires will measure ~2.2 mounted up (on Roval wheels with 29mm internal width no less). See my other reviews. You've been warned. Finally got these in the correct size. Left shoe's BOA wouldn't loosen enough to get my foot in - seemed like it was only releasing half-way. I tinkered with it and it didn't seem like the cable was just stuck, I don't think there was actually enough cable in the BOA. It loosened about half as much as the right shoe. I tried to make it work using the heel tab to help pull it on and the tab immediately tore off. It's just a pinch tab, not a loop, so you can't really pull *that* hard on it to begin with. So for $500 you get shoes with wonky sizing that might arrive broken and that could fall apart trying to pull them on. Makes me how they'll last once you actually get them out riding... I'm a big fan of Specialized's bikes - I own two of them currently. But their other stuff is just trash in my opinion. Expensive trash. Add these shoes to the list.

Great Shoes

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
Size Bought:
42

This is more initial impretions. But, this is by far the most comfortable shoe I've worn on the mountain bike. It feels like you are putting on a slipper. I am coming from the specialized S-works Rekon which is also a great shoe, I would say the rekon is better for 'trail riding' or even sprinting for that matter. On the Exos Evo, the First thing when I put this on I thought I would have no control on the bike since there is no actual heel cup or support in the upper material. To my complete surprise, these locked my feet in really nice on the descents and more technical riding. The thing i have to like about these the most is how light and breathable they are. My first couple rides in there have been in 90+ degree weather and my feet have been far from burning up. I would reccomend this shoe that is going to be racing XCC, Endurance, Gravel Etc. Its crazy light, crazy stiff since it uses the same sole as the S-works rekon and crazy breathable. On a side note the new Boa system they used on this shoe has been great, micro adjusts really well. I have had problems in the past where dirt would seize the Dial up. Also sizing for this i use a 42 in all my other Specialized shoes and that is what i got in this. It felt big at fort because of how soft the upper is but im glad i stuck with the 42.
