S-Works EXOS Cycling Shoe

Weighing in at right around 300 grams per pair, the S-Works EXOS Cycling Shoes are the lightest we've ever seen come through the shop. Specialized pulled out all the stops to make these shoes feathery light without sacrificing support or power transfer, and though the fit might not be quite as secure as the race-oriented S-Works 7's, the weightless feeling and slipper-like comfort they provide is truly unrivaled among high-end cycling shoes.

To get the weight down to the 150g mark per shoe, Specialized employs Finite Element Analysis and pressure mapping to shave all unnecessary material from the carbon sole while maintaining a high level of stiffness and pedaling efficiency. For the uppers, space-grade Dyneema mesh is used which is incredibly strong and lightweight and won't deform or stretch under power. The heel cup is removed to save even more weight, replaced by CubicTec reinforcements that mold to your heel to prevent slippage. The toe box is also removed, replaced by a Warp Sleeve vamp that not only sheds grams but also improves comfort in the forefoot area.

Despite the minimalist approach, the S-Works EXOS Shoes still come equipped with Specialized's Body Geometry technology that claims to improve comfort and reduce your chance of chronic injury. Defining elements include a Longitudinal Arch support that boosts your power output, a built-in Varus Wedge that improves knee alignment while pedaling, and a Metatarsal Button that alleviates numbness and hot spots.

Only if this was a Wide and White shoe

Familiarity:
I've used it several times
Size Bought:

Height:

Weight:

Shoes were excellent for indoor training but hurt outside when going for 2 hours or more. I would like a wide white version but it does not exist. Sadly have to exchange these pair of shoes.

Monster hill climb no more

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
Size Bought:
37
Height:
5' 3"
Weight:

I purchased the size 37 which came out to weigh 125 g on the scale. I was very happy about that. This meant the pair was 1/4 lb lighter than prior shoes which are very light. I noticed the biggest difference going up a monster hill climb. It now seems to be just a hill climb. I haven't had any issues with durability. My foot is a little wide but I ordered the regular size shoe. I have had no issues with fit. It is nice to be able to wiggle my toes a little more.

Cycling Slippers

So, the reason I got these is because of the heat where I live. It's routinely over 50 degrees during the summer. This is also why I got white. Wearing only a thin set of Giro cycling socks under these, it feels like you can clip in while wearing your bedroom slippers. Whereas my feet would get hot in my Sidi Shots during the heat of summer, the Exos gives me comfort in the head as well as reliable performance.

These are not your normal road shoe. They don't fit like it and they don't really ride like it either. On flat ground on a normal ride in the middle of summer, I don't think there is a better shoe. You'll barely notice you're wearing any shoe at all. On to the oddities: - The insole has very little arch support for my narrow foot and is extremely small compared to a normal insole. I was able to squeeze in my own custom one though and that made everything else a perfect fit. - It can be a little tight to get in the shoe but you can stretch the tongue farther than you think and squeeze in. - You can tighten these way down or leave them totally free and there's very little difference in a casual riding scenario. Impressive foot hold despite the light weight and lack of structure. - These are plenty stiff but not the stiffest. Considering the rest of the shoe's construction, the sole is not the weak point in power transfer. Anytime you're pulling up heavily on the pedals, you'll notice just a tiny bit of stretch from the upper. If you ride some really steep hills/mountains at super low cadence or really like to sprint using the upstroke, these are not the shoes for you in my opinion, the weight savings is not worth the sacrifice in power transfer. - Durability has not been an issue for me but you I do notice myself being extra careful with these and I haven't tried to test them in that department. They endure normal riding scuffs just fine. Most of my riding is done in very hot, humid, and flat Florida so these are perfect for my all day rides. No pressure points over 6 hours. No soaking wet socks from sweat. Love them and would recommend them to anyone with the budget to have more than one pair of road shoes.

After about 1K miles in these shoes, the fit is true and ideal for high arch wide forefoot. Initially not sure of the single Boa, but with the well padded tongue, they adjust and tighten up as advertised. This is the first shoe I've had without a solid heel counter, but once put on are as snug in the heel as any hard counter (Shimano). The upper may seem to be too lightweight, but there is zero stretch. This is great technology and innovative design.
