Why We Like The Specialized Recon 2.0 Mountain Bike Shoe

The next level up in Specialized's Recon line, the Recon 2.0 Mountain Bike Shoe continues to focus on performance, comfort, and efficiency, but with a few feature upgrades that aren't available in the 1.0. The primary upgrade is an endlessly adjustable L6-Snap Boa dial and strap closure system that locks in a precise fit in seconds and offers micro-adjustable comfort customization on the fly. Specialized also introduced XPEL mesh to the 2.0 for quick-drying, breathable comfort when you're dealing with wetter conditions on the trail. This means no wet shoes the morning after a rainy ride.

Balancing off-bike comfort and in-the-saddle performance, the Injection STRIDE toe-flex technology allows natural toe movement when walking, while maintaining stiffness for pedal efficiency. The Body Geometry construction increases power and efficiency with optimal hip, knee, and foot alignment on rides that go from open gravel to snaking singletrack. And if there are hike-a-bike sections, the lifted heel and SlipNot rubber treads work together to deliver natural comfort and confidence with every step—especially if some of those steps happen to be over slippery rocks and sloppy mud.

Great MTB Shoe

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer
Size Bought:
45.5
Weight:
175

Have done a few hundred trail miles with these shoe. They are a great trail shoe and i like the BOA micro tension. When hike a bike comes, the slight amount of flex in the toe and tough aggressive all rubber sole are just what is needed. In the loose or scrambling over rocks they grip and the lugs have not torn or chipped. The shoes are very comfortable, for me, even on 4-5 hour rides. The stiff section is very stable with XT clip-less pedals, no pins. Even if I'm forced to un-clip and still need a pedal, the aggressive bottom gets some traction on the clipless pedals. It has saved my butt several time. My cons: 1) On my 2nd ride, clipped the BOA tension device on a log and it came apart losing tension in the lace. I was lucky, after and extensive search on and off the trial I found all the dial pieces and was able to figure out how to reassemble it trail side. Riding again, with proper tension, after 40mins. Didn't have to replace any pieces. 2) About once a month or 200 miles need to silicone spray the BOA line, clips and tension device. This ensures smooth tension and release. My current riding conditions are very dry, loose, dusty and often sandy sections. 3) Runs large. I wear an 11.5 - 12 US shoe and got the 45.5. I think a 45 would work. Highly recommend this shoe. 5 Stars; comfort and function. 4 stars; fit and concern for loosing another BOA dial and tension. Most likely will buy again.

Boa dial kept coming off

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I rode in these shoes three times. All three times the left shoe boa dial either came off when I initially went to put on the shoe or when I went to adjust the shoe on the trail. Each time I was able to figure out how to put the boa dial back on but obviously this is something that is not supposed to happen. Now comparing this boa to the one of my Shimano S-Phyre road shoe it is clearly not as solid/well made as it but then again that is a pricey shoe. I don't know if the issue is a design defect or a manufacturing defect but it is a defect. One can only assume that if kept and the dial kept coming off eventually something will wear out/break to where it does not go back on and that could be when one is miles away from the car. So I requested a return and have sent the shoes back. Back to square one.
