Love them!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Smith’s Chromapop lenses are the best lenses on the market. Literally made the switch to Smith for biking, skiing, and street wear, don’t intend on ever going back. These glasses fit great, cling to your face, but don’t squeeze. Super nice that they come with a low light lens as well, work for all light conditions while riding!

Cool but not too good at least for me

I think these are very cool sport sunglasses but at the time I believe they have a fundamental problem. These lenses tilt at a very generous angle off my face, leaving quite a gap off my forehead while coming very close to my cheeks at the bottom. The big gap around my forehead would be a problem with overhead/stray rays, as I would see some reflections swirling around depending on the angle where the light hit. Reflection is not as bad with the main darker Chromapop lens, but it is worst with the extra lighter rose shades for some reason. If I wear a visor or a cap, reflection would reduce drastically. I think there is a light mirror finish with these lenses, which would produce a small amount of reflection regardless. The generous angle of these shades off my face would sort of negate the benefit of a frameless expanded and unobstructed field of view as intended. Until I tried these glasses, I never thought that a frame around the top could act as a seal against overhead/stray lights. I think this frameless design is great but they just need to reduce the angle of the glasses. The Pivlock system is a clever design but I think it could become a problem if I swap lenses frequently, as the lock could wear down prematurely. This Pivlock system also requires stringent manufacturing tolerances, as a slight dimensional off on any of the parts would amplify and affect the fitting on a face. Mine actually sit a little off balance on my face. The nosepiece is also another clever design with two adjustable settings. I have a small nose so I use the narrower setting. I think you probably need a tall and big nose to use the wilder setting. The rubber nose pads seem a little hard on my nose. I have both the Arena and the Arena Max and I noticed the difference between the two is minimum, as you really have to look closer to the shape of the lenses at the bottom to see it. I think that’s about all the things to mention that I can think of. These glasses only came with two lenses instead of three as per previous iterations, which I think is still great comparing to other brands. Before, I always thought of Smith Optics as a very regard company with some top-notch products, but now that image is smudged a little bit after trying these Arena glasses.

    Unanswered Question

How many lenses come with these glasses?

    Stoked on chromaPop

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've had many pairs of these sunglasses, and I'm glad they started making them with the ChromaPop lens! They're great for activity on hot or cold days - the rubber keeps them in place even when I'm sweating.

    More Like Chroma-STOP-and-stare

Because that's what everybody will be doing to you when you're sporting these puppies.

Probably not really, but they do look great! I see a lot of people complaining that the lenses tend to crack on the corners where you lock in the frame. I've been using mine for 5 or so months, and they have not yet started doing this. I can see how the lenses could be a bit weak there, though.

Switching out lenses is a breeze! Mine came with 2 lenses, one for sunny conditions and one for low light conditions. The nose piece is also adjustable, so it should fit comfortably no matter what! I have a smaller, narrower face and these fit great! We also have the Arena Max if you have a larger face and think you would benefit from the larger lens.

I can't really tell if the Chromapop technology makes too much difference, but I would probably still splurge for it. I imagine I'd miss it if I went back to some standard lenses.

I don't really have any complaints what so ever. These perform awesome, and I tend not to even notice them after I put them on!

    2nd pair

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Have two different colors of these glasses and love them! Fit is great with my Smith and Giro helmets. I feel as though I have a standard size head and these feel great. The 3rd time I swapped out the lenses on my first pair, I did chip the attachment hook on the temple. The glasses still work though. I did learn my lesson to be extra careful when I swap my lenses. As long as I am mindful when swapping the lenses there are no problems. The Chromapop is the real deal. Really makes the Utah fall colors pop! These came with two lenses- the one pictured and a rose colored lens.

    Had to Return

I am still giving these glasses three stars, because I think the quality is good and the design is great. However, my face is small and I get VERY sweaty. I didn't have a problem with them slipping down my nose but up. As I progressed through my run the glasses would slide up my nose and push against my face. My eyelashes would then rub on the lens which is very annoying. I think they may have just been too big for me.

Great looking, could have gone bigger

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size

My husband bought these and has this to say: I needed some full coverage glasses for biking, had heard great things about these so I pulled the trigger. The look great which is nice and they come with a low light lense which is also awesome. Changing the lenses is a little terrifying and I have chipped the lenses while doing this already. I am scared that too much changing will break the lenses. Also, I could have gone bigger, maybe the arena max. While wearing the glasses I can look below the lenses if I look down. All other vision fields are covered. This is my fault and I should have gone to a store and tried them on first. No fogging issues unless I stop biking, image clarity is exceptional. Very solid on my face, do not slip at all. All in all I am very happy with them, but not sure I am going to be switching the lenses much.

      Comfort and Performance

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
      • Fit: True to size

These glasses are great! I just switched over to Smith after using Oakley's for years. I have to say I actually prefer the Smiths!

I have a pretty narrow face and these fit great! The ChromaPop lenses actually work. They help keep the lighting consistent while you are dodging in and out of wooded areas while mountain biking. Not only do they perform well but they are super comfortable and lightweight.

My only complaint is that the PivLock system is pretty fragile. Everytime I swap out lenses I feel as if I'm going to break them. The temple of the glasses lock into two small holes on the lens.

Overall, I would recommend these glasses to anyone!

      Great Riding Glasses

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size

My girlfriend had originally purchased the Pivlock Asana but didn't like the smaller fit. She has a pretty average size head but she likes the larger lens on the Arena much more. These fit well with her Poc Tectal helmet and the included clear lens is definitely a plus.

      Chromapop Actually works

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times
      • Fit: True to size

After hearing the bold claims made by Smith about Chromapop lenses actually being able to enhance your vision I was skeptical, however, after having ridden with them I am shocked at how well they actually work. Even while using the full sun lenses in the woods I still had great trail definition and could see all of the little roots and rocks. The fit on these glasses can be the one drawback I have experienced; the large lens which allow for great unobstructed vision can interfere with some helmets and does not give you the most comfortable fit.

      Nice glasses but...

      • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I picked these up for a great price and they did the job well. Great visibility in the drops which is one of the main things I was looking for. Multiple lenses were a big plus. Problem is the Piv-Lock mechanism is dependent on small holes in the upper corners of each lens. That small piece is subject to fracture. The first pair I had broke while I was at the half way point in a century and then became luggage. I don't believe I had ever changed the lens. I returned those for another pair. In taking a picture for this review, I just noticed that this lens has a fracture in is as well and I believe I only used it one time last season. This set is going back too. It's a shame. Otherwise great glasses.
