Safety first.

In the realm of cycling helmets, few innovations of the past couple of years have caused as much of a stir as Multi-Directional Impact System (MIPS) and Smith's impact-absorbing Koroyd structure. For 2016, the two technologies return as the protective heart of the Smith Overtake MIPS Helmet, which has been left largely unchanged except for some aesthetic tinkering. In addition to MIPS and Koroyd, the aerodynamic benefits, weight savings, and heat evacuation of the new Overtake Helmet are the exact same as its predecessor.

MIPS addresses the specific pressures of an oblique, or non-direct impact, by separating the outer shell from the inner, MIPS layer. In the event of an angled impact, the outer layer slides across the MIPS layer, dissipating rotational force to reduce brain deformation, which is often responsible for concussions and long term damage. Since the impact of cycling crashes tends to happen at angles other than 90 degrees, this added element of protection will likely come into play if you take an unfortunate tumble.

The rest of the features are the same as those of the non-MIPS Overtake, including the distinctive Koroyd layer. Koroyd is what Smith is calling the funny looking layer of honeycomb tubes that runs beneath the outer shell and more traditional EPS foam. It's made of thousands of tiny, extruded co-polymer tubes that absorb impact but have a fenestrated surface that allows for a level of breathability impossible to achieve with solid EPS foam while absorbing a claimed 30% more energy. Plus, it's pretty cool looking, especially in Smith's mix of contrasting and complementary color schemes.

Now for aerodynamics, which has become the buzz word in cycling helmets of late. Smith is aware that the Overtake would have to stack up against the industry's best in this department or it would be received as just another novelty act, so it brought in Len Brownlie, an aerodynamics guru whose CV includes helping time trial medalists dial their position, contributing to Canada's OwnthePodium project, and — oh yeah — presenting a paper titled "The wind-averaged aerodynamic drag of competitive time trial cycling helmets" at the 2010 conference of the International Sports Engineering Association in Vienna. Brownlie adapted an automobile industry test for cycling specific applications, and the Overtake was tossed into the wind tunnel for a test.

Apparently the Overtake studied, because it passed. At a simulated 25 miles per hour over 40 kilometers, the Overtake surrendered a mere 1.06 seconds of advantage to the Specialized Evade and actually gained 4.15 and 26.8 seconds over Giro's Air Attack and Aeon, respectively. And at 250 grams, there's no weight penalty, putting it in the company of peloton-grade helmets from the likes of POC and Giro, and it's actually 10 to 20 grams lighter than helmets from Catlike and Kask. So it's aerodynamic, lightweight, and it features some welcome design elements like sunglass channels to stow your shades just above the temples for coffee shop raids.

Glad I had it on!

Had worn it for over a year without any issues and thought it was very comfortable. I am an M in Giro helmets and the M in this fit great. I live in W. Texas and don't find it much warmer than the Giro Synthe so ventilation seems okay.

The one caution I will give is be careful what you clean it with. I ruined the finished wiping it down with rubbing alcohol.

I had a nice wreck at our MTB park and cracked it open with very little damage to myself despite a very hard hit.

I am going to buy another one and would certainly recommend.

This helmet is incredibly light, provides great air flow and is supposedly great for safety! I'm happy to report that i havent tested out the safety portion of this helmet yet... But i'm very happy with this product!

Great helmet

    This helmet is light, stylish and built with MIPS. I enjoy using this on very hot days and really enjoy the great ventilation. I hope to not be able to write back on the safety and impact ratings

    Unfortunately, I managed to crash on my first ride with a new Overtake MIPS. The impact damaged the right rear section of the helmet (behind my right ear), so I was very glad to have helmet coverage in that area - not all helmets do. The helmet was very effective in minimizing injury. I seem to have no symptoms of head injury at all despite the helmet being ruined. This is a bitter-sweet review in that I'm glad I was wearing the latest technology, but disappointed to have ruined a new helmet. The only downside I noticed was that ventilation was reduced relative to some other helmets I've used, but this is not a major problem in the cooler climate where I live.

    I bought this for the extra promised safety, vis a vis the MIPS and koroyd. Thankfully, I haven't tested those features yet.

    But what did surprise me right off was just how comfortable it is. My head doesn't finish rides as covered in sweat as in my old helmet, so it seems the ventilation described is for real. And just sitting on my head, it's very easy to forget that it's there.

    Edit: I forgot one possible disadvantage (hasn't affected me). You can't use strap-based helmet mounts for cameras or lights. And that would apply for all koroyd helmets.

    Comfortable, but needs better directions

    The good: I've worn this since November 2017 on rides from 25-101F. It sits higher than my old Giro, but it has room for a thin thermal skullcap or balaclava in the winter and a cycling cap or sun beanie in the summer. It's light and I don't think it's any warmer than any other helmet I've worn. The MIPS is a good thing, and the honeycomb helps avoid those incidents where a flying, buzzy, stinging thing gets caught in your helmet/hair. You can get a good, secure fit but getting that fit is where it loses a point.
    The bad: the directions/manual is horribly sparse. There's nothing in it to tell you how to adjust the Vapor Fit band to sit lower on the back of your skull (yes, it is adjustable up/down). The strap positions don't sit as well on my face and if you're of the "sunglasses over the strap" school, there's enough of a gap that it's hit or miss where the sunglass arms will wind up. Lastly, I haven't figured out how to *securely* stow my sunglasses (there's nothing in the manual to even say where they should go; you're left to figure it out on your own: front? rear? It's all trial and error.) You have to have completely straight sunglass arms with no ear bend to get a secure fit. Even my Smith glasses don't stay in place because they have a slight ear bend. After a couple of times having to fish my glasses out of a toilet, coupled with much cursing, I don't put any glasses in the dock at all.

    Did you ever get an answer? I have the same two questions, adjusting the Vapor Fit to get it to sit lower and, less importantly, the sunglasses dock one!

    I always love helmets that while you're wearing them, you can't even tell they are there. Smith's seem to always be that way for me. Really light weight and comfortable fit. I'd say the only down side is that the air flow isn't good as some as the other ones I've had in the past but I'd still recommend it.

    I decided to spend the extra money on this helmet because of the MIPS technology. I had a bad crash years ago and felt lucky my brains weren't scrambled. This light helmet should offer me the added protection if I go down again. I was pleased to learn that the helmet is cool on the head in warm weather and neutral temperature during the colder days. I have used this helmet half of a dozen times so far and am very pleased.

    it is a really cool helmet, well built and i with mips you are safer on the rode, i would recommend that if you are at the edge of a size, go a bigger size

    Close but no cigar

    I really wanted to like this helmet. The MIPS plus the Koroyd make the design exceptionally safe, and it's beautifully made--the workmanship, materials, and look all mark it out as a premium helmet. But it sits very high on the head (a feature of the new MIPS insert, perhaps?) and I just couldn't get it to feel secure, even though I got the right size (medium for a 57cm head circumference). My Giro and Kask helmets both sit a little lower/have a deeper interior, and do a better job with this. I don't think this would be too much of a problem for riding without a cap/beanie underneath, but living in the Pacific Northwest means that kind of riding occupies about 5 months of the year. So back it goes, unfortunately.

    No more askew helmet head

    I've worn many a helmet...Giro, Mavic, Bell, Laser and none of these fit my head like my new Smith Overtake. All other helmets sat on my head like I was doffing my chapeau and I took no end of ribbing about it.
    The Overtake is light and I don't experience any hot head issues. Finally, a helmet I really like and it's MIPS to boot.

      This is a great helmet. I was worried about sweating too much with a bike helmet but this one is so lightweight and breathable. The dial on the back of it also allowed me to tighten it to fit snug around my head. Def recommend this helmet!

      I was looking for a different cycling helmet other than all of those Giro helmets that I see and I was very happy to find this one.

      It's very lightweight and fits really well. They don't show you in the pictures above, but there is a dial on the back that you can crank to further tighten/loosen fit of the helmet (VaporFit Adjustable Fit System).

      All-in-all, very happy with this purchase! And it looks great!

      Not as nice as expected

      This Helmet is extremely hot on my head. I don't like that when i have an itch (from sweat or dirt) that i can't stick my finger in a vent hole and be done with it. I have an orbea and it fits secure. If i wrecked, I'm not 100% confident that it will stay in place and protect me. I also don't like the gap above my ear. Again, my orbea or bell doesn't have this vulnerable area exposed.

      After 20+ years of burning through various helmets and never actually loving any of them, I've finally found the Smith Overtake. It's got a perfect fit, and doesn't look like a big goofy unproportional piece of foam and plastic. Instead, it's low profile, stylish, aero, and even has a design that allows you to clip your Smith sunglasses on it, which is quite easy to do while you're riding if you want to take them off.
