Item # SMI00CA

A new take on road helmets.

In 2013, Smith unveiled its first ever foray into the cycling helmet industry, the mountain bike-specific Forefront, to rave reviews. Now, it's upped the ante with the Overtake Helmet, designed specifically for the road. Situated firmly in the race-ready helmet domain, the Overtake is light weight and feature features welcome design elements such as sunglass channels to stow your shades just above the temples for coffee shop raids or slow, sweaty climbs, and some structural differences that make the Overtake really stand out.

That funny looking layer of honeycomb matter that runs beneath the outer shell and more traditional EPS foam is what Smith calls Koroyd. It's made of thousands of tiny, extruded co-polymer tubes that absorb impact but have a fenestrated surface that allows for a level of breathability impossible to achieve with solid EPS foam while absorbing a claimed 30% more energy. Plus, it's pretty cool looking, especially in Smith's mix of contrasting and complementary color schemes.

With aerodynamics becoming the preeminent buzz word in cycling helmets of late, Smith knew that the Overtake had to stack up against the industry's best in this department, so it brought in Len Brownlie, an aerodynamics guru whose CV includes helping Commonwealth Games champion Tara Whitten dial her time trial position, contributing to Canada's OwnthePodium project, and presenting a paper titled "The wind-averaged aerodynamic drag of competitive time trial cycling helmets" at the 2010 conference of the International Sports Engineering Association in Vienna. Brownlie adapted an automobile industry test for cycling-specific applications, and the Overtake was tossed into the wind tunnel for a test.

Apparently the Overtake studied, because it passed. At a simulated 25 miles per hour over 40 kilometers, the Overtake surrendered a mere 1.06 seconds of advantage to the Specialized Evade and actually gained 4.15 and 26.8 seconds over Giro's Air Attack and Aeon, respectively.

  • A road helmet that brings Smith's snow sport tech to cycling
  • Combines increased impact resistance with ventilation
  • Wind-tunnel tested aerodynamic design
  • Adjustment system for all-day comfort

It worked.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Went down this morning after a blow out on a corner. Hit side of helmet and could feel the helmet absorb the impact. Did exactly what it said it was supposed to do. I will be buying another. Now if only it could do something for the road rash.
edit: I live in Tucson so naturally I ride when the temps are over a 100. I have never had a problem with this helmet being hot.

This is a great helmet! It fits well. is comfortable, and looks good on (unlike many bike helmets). It also integrates well with my Smith sunglasses

Comfortable but hot...

  • Fit: True to size

Extremely comfortable and light as well. I love the fit and look. The only downside is that it is blazing hot. The ventilation only works if you look down at the ground and it still isn't that ventilating. I would have disliked this helmet for that reason except as a fat bike rider who rides in the winter, this helmet is perfect. I wear just a ear/head band and can ride down to 10F and put on a beanie if it's colder. I would say my upper limit of comfort with this helmet is 50-60F. I would consider 3 star rating as I think Smith marketing should do a better job explaining the airflow is not great and they have other models that allow more flow.

It is hot as crap. That honey comb crap gotta go. Too bad cause it the freaking most comfortable helmet out there. I have tried both this and the forefront mtb version and both are hot as hell but oh so comfy you don't know you're wearing it comfy

Ridden a few hundred miles and love!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I read a lot of great reviews and decided to take advantage of a great deal here at CC. I have a smaller "noggin" and love the fit and style of this helmet. It wears light and disappears on the ride! For reference, I have a Specialized Prevail 2, Giro Aeolus and Kask Mojito. All great helmets but the Smith now my favorite.

Awesome helmet!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This is a much more comfortable helmet from my previous Specialized one. Looks great on me as well!

Hemet Fit

  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Medium

This helmet is lighter than previous helmets. I feel very comfortable in wearing and it does not get hot in the warm temps.

Great looking and like a feather !

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

When you are riding you forget you have good protection on your head . There is room in the back of the helmet for a Blinky light . I love it and highly recommend it .

Better than I expected

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I wanted a light helmet with top-notch safety. I'm certainly pleased with the light weight and I feel good about the Koroyd protection, but the nice snug fit is the best fit of any helmet I've worn. I'm also pleased with the airflow, which seems quite adequate to me (not much hair on my head, so I can easily feel it). The fit is really my favorite part. Very secure and comfy. My wife tried mine on and immediately bought her own.

Smith Overtake Helmet

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

This is a good helmet. Well made. Fits well. Hold Smith Sunglasses well in the slot for them. It is a little hotter than other helmets. I purchased it for the construction, aerodynamics, and the Koroyd. I have the mountain bike version as well and it performs well also.

Cool and comfortable

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

Luckily haven't tested it crash protection yet. As far as breathability and looks go it's the cats pajamas. Do something about that heavy $50 turtle shell you've been riding around with and get a helmet that matches the badassery of your Bike!

My Most Comfortable Helmet

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Extra Large

When buying a helmet or shoes through a cyber store there is a certain amount of risk that the fit won't be right. I needed an extra large and it turned out to be a perfect fit. The strap is comfortable, too. My prior helmet was probably only two years old, but I really wanted the new MIPS technology. My only regret is that I had to go to plain Jane white. Basic colors from 2016 were the only options remaining during a close out sale and I wanted something that was highly visible I would recommend a Smith Overtake Helmet to anyone and hope that they never need to test it.

I did need Smith protection. I have a regular Smith Overtake. On 9/1/2017 I dropped my front wheel into a gap between two metal drainage grates. I suffered four fractured neck vertebrae, six broken ribs, a broken hand, a chip at the back of the skull, one lost front tooth, and extensive lacerations. My Overtake did not crack or fracture the way Giro helmets have done. Although the helmet above my eyebrows is crushed to a quarter its original thickness, I was up walking in the hospital after two days. Now I'm riding my home trainer and recovering. I'm not paralyzed or dead. Is there any greater praise?

First Smith helmet

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

My first Smith helmet and very happy. The medium fit true to size. Well built. I've been wearing Trek and Mavic for awhile but this helmet is just as or more comfortable. Most important reason that I bought the helmet is my riding buddy went over the bars and only had a slight headache when he should have had at least a concussion.

Function and Fit

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Smith makes great ski helmets as we all know, but when I purchased the Overtake Helmet for road biking this year I was beyond impressed. It is light but super durable, and has great airflow and doesn't get to hot on sweltering days. I got it in black and it is sleek and fits the head very well.

Love it!

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

This is a awesome helmet. It has great airflow and is super durable. Plus it has a super cool color!

Saved my life

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This isn't a mountain biking helmet, but I used it anyway because I neglected to buy a new helmet...regardless, I took a pretty nasty spill and was totally fine, thanks to this helmet. It's amazing to think that I would probably be a vegetable bleeding out on a rock, instead I was able to finish my ride and still have fun...amazing helmet, breaths well, looks good, saves lives.

One of the best helmets...

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size

love this helmet ...very light great coverage and love the fact no bugs can get in too!! MIPS very comfortable...I also have a POC which I love but with the big vents.... bugs ...bees have gotten in...Hope to never test it...but coverage great front and back...only used twice as I just received it...

Excellent helmet

This is a great helmet. I was initially skeptical of the helmet due to the design and materials (koyrod) but wow does it work. I went with the black matte, I like how Smith decided to tone down the look of this helmet by not having contrasting colors with the koyrod. The previous iterrations were just too loud for me. The fit is spot on and the mechanisms for keeping the helmet in place are unobtrusive and work as they should. I can't fully comment on whether this helemet is cool or hot in the summer, since I've only ridden it in the winter. But, I will say that even with a skull cap on my head is significantly cooler than my old Giro Aeon. So I have high hopes for the summer and ventillation, I can really feel the cold air getting sucked over my head in the winter. Not the best for winter, but seems like it will be fine in the summer months. My only gripe with this helemet is the price, it just doesn't feel like a $250 helemt, I got mine on sale however. Highly recommended!
