Description

Why We Like The Network MIPS Helmet

We live for the all-day rides, carving our way up dramatic canyons, cruising through miles of wild vineyards, and along coastal highways — but admittedly, we're not always so lucky to have the time. Often times we're limited to our daily commute to get in the weekday miles, and crave equipment that is versatile enough to bounce back and forth from one to the other. Designers at Smith seem to have received our asks, and answered thoroughly with the Smith Network MIPS Helmet. All new for 2018, the Network Helmet finds an uncanny balance of style, versatility, and performance, packing in MIPS and Koroyd technology to protect, with modern design and ventilation to keep you looking, and feeling cool, whether on your commute or your all-day epic.

Smith's Koroyd technology is found in the funny looking layer of honeycomb tubes that run beneath the outer shell and more traditional EPS foam throughout the helmet. It's made of thousands of tiny, extruded co-polymer tubes that absorb impact but have a fenestrated surface that allows for a level of breathability impossible to achieve with solid EPS foam while absorbing a claimed 30% more energy. Plus, it's pretty cool looking, especially in Smith's mix of contrasting and complementary color schemes.

  • Versatile cycling helmet that takes protection seriously
  • Clean aesthetics turn heads on all-day epics
  • Removable visor adds style and utility
  • Koroyd technology adds extra protection with ventilation
  • Reduce non-direct impacts with MIPS technology
  • AirEvac system fights foggy lenses with air channels
  • Pass-through channels store your frames securely when you stop for a coffee

I went on a long bike ride and during a descent nearly wrapped myself around a pole. This helmet cracked but I walked away from the accident totally fine. I bought this exact same helmet again and continue to use it. Whatever you do get a helmet with MIPS! Protect your noggin!

I purchased this brand on the recommendation of a friend. My older helmet isn't MIPS and I know it's good to upgrade every few years. We were training for a 1 day 150 and riding some parts or route along highway. Safety 1st. I noticed this helmet had weight to it. Then I noticed it held in heat more than I'd ever felt before. It was too small. I returned it. The LBS told me Smith is known for great ski helmets. They haven't gotten cycling helmets down yet. I went with a Specialized helmet with ANGI and it's a MIPS. Loved it immediately.

Warranty

Smith came through for me when the interior strap that tightens helmet around the head broke. Probably beyond any warranty period but they gave me a nice credit toward a new helmet. Thumbs up!

This is my first road/gravel helmet, so I don’t really have anything else to compare it to besides mtb helmets. However, overall it's a super light and comfortable helmet even for long days in the saddle. It could be a little bit more breathable on 100+ degree days, and the sunglass storage could be a little easier to use, but neither of those are deal-breakers for me.

The description says that I can store glasses in the vents but mine can’t get stored because the honeycomb structure gets in the way

First moderately expensive helmet purchase, bought it because it's very light and my old neck appreciates light. My block head (7 5/8ths) barely fits into the large size, add a headband or skullcap and it doesn't work for me, had to return it. Nice helmet though.

A nice helmet. Not great. Bought the hibiscus pink because it looked very bright. It is a matte color and very pretty but more soft and purple in person. Should have bought the "neon." Returning as it is not better than what I already have.

After 200-some miles of tarmac, gravel, and some dirt, I'm pretty happy with the Network MIPS. It fits my head very comfortably, and provides decent ventilation. I opted for the Matte Neon Yellow Viz because it is more visible to drivers than a dark colored helmet, but at the same time it doesn't look ridiculous like some of the competitor's hi-viz offerings. The styling is great. The rating would bump up to 5 stars with improved ventilation. It's not bad, actually pretty good, but the Koroyd on the sides does limit airflow a bit. Don't let this scare you away - I'll be happy to wear this helmet in 90+ degree humid days - but if ventilation is a priority for you then there are others that do better in this regard (but of course you will pay for it).

I got this for my husband as a gift, and also for more protection. He loves the look of it, and it fits his head really well. I had read that if you have a round head, get Smith, if oval, get Gyro. Well, I guess his head is round because it is a perfect fit!

FAST

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I took this helmet out for a weekend of biking in Moab and let me tell you, I was FAST. This helmet is very versatile so you can take it from commuting to road biking to cross country trails! It is definitely not the most burly helmet on the market for mountain biking, but the MIPS concussion technology is a game changer and made me feel super safe on the technical Moab terrain. I also really like that this helmet doesn't have a built in visor because it allowed me to wear my brim hat underneath very comfortably. There is no question about it, the Smith Network helmet, paired with some pit vipers and you too will be able to lift your bike over your head. https://www.backcountry.com/pit-viper-pit-viper-sunglasses-polarized? https://www.backcountry.com/pit-viper-pit-viper-sunglasses-polarized?skid=PIT0003-GD-ONESIZ&ti=U2VhcmNoIFJlc3VsdHM6cGl0IHZpcGVyczoxOjI6cGl0IHZpcGVycw==

I've used it several times

This helmet served me really well for the week I checked it out from the Backcountry gear closet. Mostly used it for commuting to work. Im usually a size large helmet, and this helmet fit true to my size. Vents make for a nice cool ride to keep from a toasty head. Didn't have any issues with it.

Best looking helmet and comfortable

I was looking for the best looking helmet and I think this is about as aesthetically pleasing as a cycling helmet can be with current technology. Also fits my round head much better than Giro which are designed for oval heads. This is important. If you're round, get a Smith, if you're oval, get a Giro.

First time owning a Smith helmet - used to ride with a Giro Atmos until the pads got all squished out & didn't provide any padding. First impressions - Great fit for my head shape, no hotspots, cinches down and you're ready to ride. M size for reference - I'll usually find myself teetering on M - L sizes for most helmets (atmos was a L - had to cinch it down pretty tight to stop the wobbles). Comfortable padding aides the fit - almost reminded me of the new SPIN tech from POC. Lastly - colorways for DAYS! It's difficult for me to wear anything from black these days, the Gravy colorway seemed pretty low profile - matches just about any color jersey you throw at it. way to keep it neutral Smith (plenty of vibrant colors if you're feeling festive).

I too fall between M and L being at 59cm, the exact middle of both Smith sizes. M = 55-59 L = 59-62. What is your measurement?
