Don't mess with a good thing.

Smith’s Forefront — the helmet that started it all for Smith bike helmets — is back and now available with MIPS. Smith’s designers had so much fun with their mountain bike helmet that they’ve since adapted the technology to other helmets. For their first foray into cycling in 2013, they created a winning design, and besides the addition of MIPS technology, it’s one they haven’t felt compelled to change much since. Smith uses its proprietary Aerocore Koroyd construction to create an inner layer resembling a honeycomb that wraps around your head, protected by the traditional outer EPS foam shell meant to absorb initial impact. MIPS, or Multi Directional Impact Protection System, refers to the Swedish technology added to the helmet in the form of a thin inner layer that rotates slightly upon impact to absorb the brain-damaging rotational energy created in certain crashes.

An effective design feature to note is the Forefront’s coverage of the lower back of the head, an area vulnerable in crashes and one that not all helmets protect. To make sure all of the safety features don’t leave you feeling overheated, Smith added its new X-Static performance cooling liner to this year’s Forefront and kept the 21 air vents it had previously. And although the Forefront focuses primarily on safety, it doesn’t do so at the expense of style. The helmet was also treated with an adjustable visor that can be removed if desired, and it’s built to fully integrate with sunglasses, goggles, headlights, or cameras. It’s finished off with a goggle retention strap as well as Smith’s VaporFit adjustable fit system to help you dial in just the right fit and feel.

Bachelor Cranium Protector

  • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

I picked up the non-MIPS Forefront last year and absolutely love it. I have found that the Koroyd material combined with the AirEvac ventilation system is decently breathable and after a couple minutes of riding you barely notice you have this bad boy on your head.

On a recent bachelor party trip to Hood River, Oregon I snagged this MIPS version for my friend the Nickster. He already had the Smith Pivlock V2 Max Sunglasses and needed the appropriate helmet. You can attach most Smith bike glasses upside down to the Forefront when you aren't riding. MIPS is the best for protecting your cranium in the event of a crash and I know Nick's fiancee appreciates the extra protection for his pretty head!

I would highly recommend this helmet and feel free to shoot me any questions on bike helmets or anything mountain bike related.

Bachelor Cranium Protector

Awesome

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I typically use this helmet in 60 degree weather or less but the airflow generated really cools my head at speeds as low as 8 mph. I wear a beanie on cold days. The mips liner created a barrier from the straw material and the foam inserts males this helmet very comfortable. Worth the investment and certainly not your normal average lid.

Beautiful helmet, wish it fit

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

The quality was great, good amount of detail from the many positions to adjust the helmet. But unfortunately its too small for my melon head. I bought the large, thinking it will fit up to 63 CM as stated but unfortunately its a tad too small. I wear a 7 7/8-8 fitted basebal hat and this just wasnt cutting it. I normally wear the L Bell Super and XL TLD A1 which all fit nicely but wish this one did as its a sweet looking helmet! Maybe Smith will make an XL in the future.

Best MTB Helmet, period.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've "put it through the wringer",and, I've got nothing but great things to say.

It's everything you want in a helmet, and, then somehow more, and more, and more. I think my favorite feature is the adjustable visor. I like to flip it up when I am climbing.

Super comfy, a bit hot.

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: Large

Using this as my all around trail helmet. This helmet is very comfortable and has great coverage. The visor has only 2 positions, but is effective. This helmet is a bit heavy too. If you're wearing a light weight XC lid, you'll notice the weight. It's not awful, but noticeable.
Biggest problem with this helmet is that it does not ventilate very well. On a hot day, this baby is steamy!

Neon Orange is Hunter Safety Orange

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Great helmet but be aware that the Neon Orange should more accurately be called Hunter Safety Orange...probably not PC enough for the community...but if you're riding in hunting zones, that's the ticket. Or if you just want to look like Elmer Fudd...otherwise you may want to reconsider your color choice. This looks nothing like the nice friendly orange color shown on the Smith website, the backcountry.com pics, or the nice orange helmet they make for snow sports. Returned and found a lovely non-MIPS version in a happy cranberry-ish red color...think it was a late 2013 color like Smith had at Interbike 2013 along with the Red, White and Blue version. Super comfortable, easy adjustment that stays put, ultra lightweight, great venting and never bothered me even in 95 degree Fruita, CO heat. Love the greater coverage.

Lovin the lid

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Great fit, great ventilation, easy adjustment, looks sweet. Have not tested it out yet and hope to not have to.

Fantastic helmet

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I won't ride my bike unless I'm wearing this helmet. Haven't tested it out with a crash (knock on wood) but feel better knowing this helmet is protecting my noggin. Fits well, easy fit adjustment on the back and you look like a bad ass wearing it.

Fantastic helmet
