Item # SMI00CC

Smith Optics has become an icon for its stellar lineup of killer shades, snow helmets, and goggles. But the boys in Sun Valley spend most of the year riding mountain bikes on the region’s countless miles of singletrack, and they (understandably) want to keep their domes comfortable and protected during the warmer months as well. Enter the Forefront Helmet, which pools Smith's extensive knowledge of all things lid-related to bring feather-light construction and hard-hitting protection to your time on the trail.

Smith accomplishes a blend of minimal weight and maximum protection through the use of its patented Aerocore technology. This construction employs Koroyd material, which looks a lot like the bundles of straws you may have used in science class to protect eggs when you dropped them off a roof. That resemblance isn't a coincidence, as this honeycomb construction yields a claimed 30% reduction in forces transmitted to your noggin when compared to EPS foam, the industry standard. It’s particularly useful for building helmets because it requires a minimal amount of material, so there’s no unnecessary weight. It also has the desirable effect of maximizing airflow, keeping you cool when you’re working hard.

The helmet's interior features an X-Static lining with Reactive Cooling Performance to help manage odor and keep you cool. Fit tuning is handled by Smith’s VaporFit retention system, which utilizes a click-wheel adjuster that’s borrowed from Smith's well-tested snow helmet division, so you know it’s solid. The AirEvac ventilation system, which channels hot air out of the tops of your glasses or goggles to reduce fogging, is another import from the snow program.

While the Aerocore construction has plenty of advantages, unrestricted, large vents for clamping attachments isn’t one of them, which is why Smith includes integrated camera and light mounts. Using a threaded brass insert atop the helmet, you’re able to pick up an aftermarket mounting kit with custom mounts for your POV camera or light. While it does require accessories, the upshot is that the mounts are far more secure than the standard strap mounts used to attach those items to other helmets, and the benefit is immediately clear when your POV footage becomes a lot less shaky.

  • Lightweight protection with a unique style
  • Karoyd material reduces force transmission
  • X-Static lining with Reactive Cooling Performance
  • VaporFit retention system adjust easily on the fly
  • AerEvac ventilation provides cooling airflow
  • Integrated camera and light mounts

Lightweight and Airy

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Solid helmet that is lightweight and gives great airflow. I literally have never had a helmet that gave me this much air flow to my sweaty scalp.

I do miss having holes to put my glasses, but you can still flip your glasses upside down and rest them in the lower channel.

Just Awesome

I love this helmet. LOVE.

Got the bright orange because I commute and have to ride roads a decent amount each week, and I really feel like it stands out and makes me more noticeable. I have zero proof of this effect, other than never having been hit by a car, which is my ultimate goal.

Secondarily, orange looks pretty sick in pictures. Living here in the mountains, we get a lot of blue sky. You know what contrasts perfectly with blue? Orange. Boom. You're welcome.

Looks sweet, gets you noticed, breathes well.

Are you looking for a headpiece with a tough outer shell, smooth breathability, and flawless adjustability? If you answered “yes” to any of those questions then STOP READING and get you a Smith Forefront Helmet. If you still have reservations, “ohhh I don’t know, my Bell helmet from the 80s works just fine.” Or “ohhh I don’t know if I can justify the cost.” Also STOP READING, cuz I’m mad at you…I’m sorry, I just get worked up about these things, but really, this is a great helmet, the Aerocore (refrigerator tech) technology keeps your head as cool as...I’m running out of ‘cool’ metaphors.

In the end, it’s an expensive helmet, but it’s a really good helmet. It looks good, it works well, and I recommend it.

Lightweight and great fit!

This helmet rocks. The VaporFit adjustments allows for the perfect fit on this helmet and the AirVac ventilation ensures that your noggin never gets too warm! I also love all of the awesome color options that this helmet comes in. And, the integration with Smith biking glasses is a nice addition so that when you take your glasses off, they fit snugly off your face on your helmet, even while still riding!

Lightweight style

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

The folks at Smith did an excellent job of designing a lightweight helmet that stands out in the field, but a few of the features, like the tiny visor and the hokey sunglass channel, don't quite deliver.

Great Helmet

This helmet is rad! Bought this one to replace my Rudy Project and the fit is phenomenal! Lots of airflow and super comfortable!

Comfy, light, and looks good too.

Awesome helmet. I started with a cheaper helmet off the bat. I always saw tons of people with this helmet and figured there must be something to that. I got one and have never looked back. Different brands will fit different people but this is one of the most comfy helmets I have worn. The Aerocore technology keeps the helmet super light and breathable without looking too crazy with a bunch of vents.

Highly recommend.

Love this helmet

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Growing up, my mom always made me wear a helmet, which I of course hated. Now that I'm an adult, I know why she enforced this rule, but I still hate the sweaty head, lack of visibility, and extra weight. Fortunately, with this helmet, I'm offered all the same safety (and more!), but don't have to deal with any of the downsides. The airflow is incredible, it's super lightweight, and the adjustable visor provides visibility even when grinding away on a steep hill.

If you're on the edge of a size range, definitely size up!

breathe easy

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

great venting and paired up with some of the best safety makes for one of the best mountain bike helmets on the market. its even comfortable to boot!

excellent helmet

Iv'e only had the forefront for about one month and I can say it's the lightest and most comfortable helmet and most $$$ I've had to date. Once on you don't even know your wearing it. Today I took a rather slow but high fall from a 3' ledge and got caught up. The bike let go and I fell straight down and hit the back my head. There was a very loud to me bang but i was fine. the Karoyd separated from the shell and the adjustment straps pulled out of the helmet but i am fine. I really appreciated the lower head coverage and called Backcountry to order a replacement they were able to offer me a discount on the new helmet as i purchased the damaged helmet from them. It is expensive but in feel it was worth it. A helmet with this lower head coverage I feel saved me from serious injury . thanks Smith and Backcountry. I understand helmets should be replaced after a big hit and I'm alittle suprised with the level of damage in such a slow speed fall but this helmet did it's job.

    Light and Comfortable

Lightest and most comfortable helmet I've owned. Other helmets have bothered my head after a long ride, but the system to tighten it down is perfect. Works well with my smith glasses too.

      So Light!

I love this helmet - it feels very light and durable at the same time. It is very breathable, and fits very well. I normally wear a small in ski/snowboard/bike helmets, and the small was the perfect size. I love that i can tighten the click wheel on the back to really dial in the fit.

Great Mountain Bike Helmet from Smith

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I got the Smith Forefront Helmet roughly a month ago and am very pleased with my purchase so far. The Forefront is a very comfortable helmet right out of the box, with only minimal tweaks needed to dial-in the fit. You can move the VaporFit retention system in the back by snapping it out and moving it up or down. Personally, I moved it down a notch, so when I tightened the click wheel, it was properly secured at the lower-back part of my head.
The honeycomb Aerocore makes this a very protective, yet light and breathable lid, and the adjustable visor is a nice touch - I have been pushing it up and out of my line of sight on especially steep climbs. All in all, I would highly recommend the Smith Forefront to anyone looking for a new cross country or enduro mountain bike helmet.

        Skid Lid

        • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Stoked on the Forefront helmet. It fits well and definitely breathes enough for hot Utah rides. I've seen Koroyd's Aerocore tests, and the results are astonishing. If you want a low-key, breathable, and comfortable mtb helmet that also protects your dome far better than foam skid lids, the Forefront should be on your short list.

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've had a Forefront for a couple seasons now and I absolutely love it. It offers a ton of protection while cruising through the woods, it's very light weight, and it's supremely comfortable. It's one of the only pieces of gear I've ever owned where if it broke today, I'd buy it again tomorrow. Also - I have it in Matte Neon Orange and I've had countless comments from other riders on how visible I am.

p.s. While wearing a Forefront, my brother recently walked away from head-butting a tree.
