Attack MAG MTB ChromaPop Sunglasses

The Attack MTB ChromaPop Sunglasses from Smith are some trail-ready shades that use photochromic technology to automatically adjust the tint from clear to grey depending on light conditions. It's Smith's most versatile lens and it shifts to allow anywhere from 20 to 85 percent of visible light transmission to enter when exposed to sunlight, so you can comfortably wear your sunglasses in a variety of lighting environments from exposed slick rock trails to Pacific Northwest loam.

These MTB's also ship with an extra ChromaPop low light amber lens that's super easy to sub in with Smith's MAG lens interchange system. Coverage is rated as large with a medium fit and for fog-free performance, the Attack MTB features a ventilation channel in the brow. Durable materials like the TR90 frames with auto-lock hinges ensure these sunglasses are in it for the long haul. You also get a secure fit with the two-position, hydrophilic nose pad and megol temples and the glasses come with a performance case and microfiber bag.

Attack Mag MTB Photochromatic

As a rider that has been mountain biking since, well, before mountain bikes existed, I am at an age where some things are a little bit of a challenge. Sunglasses for me fell into that area. My, um, mature eyes could no longer pick up detail under the trees when riding single track, and definitely could not adjust fast enough to changing light conditions going in and out of the forest with normal sunglasses. Yes I tried other photochromatic glasses, but they just did not change tint fast enough. These are different. They go from pretty close to clear in the woods to plenty dark enough in the open. They have given me back the ability to ride with sunglasses instead of clear lenses. I have been impressed with how incredibly crisp things look when using these glasses. That was an added bonus, The fact that they seem to walk a nice line in terms of blocking wind, yet not fogging up has also been great. I often forget that I am wearing them. Yes the price is premium, but worth every penny.

Incredibly fragile

I’ve been through 5 sets of lenses. All have broken at the lens/earpiece junction. Twice just while holding them and wiping the lens with a cloth. For a while, Smith was helpful and honored their warrantee. That has come to an end. Bummer, as they fit well.

the BEST sunglasses

I use the MTB attack for mountain biking, road/gravel cycling, ski touring, XC skiing and hiking. What I love about them most - they don't fog yet the lens/frame wraps your face so no matter where the sun is, or how much dust is around, your vision is not affected. I have two pairs of these glasses and four lenses but find the photochromic works for all round. I can't say enough good things about these sunglasses for my sensitive, contact wearing eyes.

Sit too close to the face, fog issues

I’m surprised that other people don’t seem to have the issues with these glasses that I have. They sit too close to my face. My eyelashes touch the lenses when I blink, which is annoying. More importantly, on climbs when I’m moving slowly or when I stop, they immediately fog up (again because I think they’re too close to my face). I’m using them primarily for mountain biking in New York where it can be humid but it’s not the PNW. I also separately bought the photochromic replacement lens (didn’t come with the color I got), and they really don’t get dark/transition well at all. Smith claims 20-85% VLT. I’d guess more like 60%-85%.

Good. Not great.

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

I've used the heck out of these glasses since I got them 6 months again. They're comfortable on the face and stay in place well. However, the quality isn't quite there. The lenses have started to delaminate and one of the connection points is loose on the lens as well. Also, maybe I just sweat too much, but I've had to start carrying a microcloth on my rides to keep the lenses clear of sweat mid ride...even when wearing a Halo band under my helmet. With that being said...Smith has world class customer service. Sent them a quick photo of the issue and they had a resolution for me within the day. Love the brand.
