We make no qualms about it, we're big fans of Allen Lim, Skratch Labs, and the Feed Zone Cookbook. However, while the aforementioned book is nearly unparalleled for cycling-conscious meals, both pre- and post-ride, it's purposefully lacking on-the-move recipes. Enter the realm of the the Feed Zone Portables Cookbook. With it, Dr. Allen Lim and chef Biju Thomas enable you to say goodbye to your synthetic, chemically-produced bars and gels, and to welcome a new world of real foods that'll deliver real-world results.

Regardless of your preference for outdoor activity, the Feed Zone Portables Cookbook has 75 new recipes that are all easy-to-make, nutritious, and most importantly, ready to consume on-the-go. And like the prior Feed Zone Cookbook, the Portables Cookbook features full-color photography of every dish, complete nutritional data, and information on why a dish is best suited for physical activity. Additionally, you'll be happy to see a continuance of the authors' focus on using real ingredients in order to make real foods. And for this time around, you'll find that the authors included over 50 vegetarian recipes and 50 gluten-free recipes -- a welcome break for herbivores that didn't feel included with the bacon-centric theme of the prior book.

So, whether you're craving Lim's trademark rice balls (our favorite), rice cakes, waffles, or paninis, you'll find them all here in one easy to read, easy to make package. Just remember to stock up on your wrapping materials.

The Feed Zone Portable Cookbook is available in hardcover and features 75 all-new recipes in full-color.

  • 75 easy-to-make recipes
  • 50 vegetarian recipes and 50 gluten-free recipes
  • Information concerning why each dish is suited for physical activity
  • Full-color photography alongside the recipe’s complete nutritional data

How many recipes in this book are nut free? I'm deathly allergic to peanuts and tree nuts which always seem to be the main ingredients in food made for getting outdoors.

HI Colin,

I'm sorry, I can't find anything about that online. You can try contacting Skratch Labs and they should have more info!

Hey Colin! Some of the recipes contain nuts but those can be left out or substituted. There are many recipes that are nut-free I would estimate 80-85% of the recipes do not contain nuts.

Mix up your ride food

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Snag this cookbook to find alternatives to the usual mix of gel, waffles, chews, or bars. The rice cakes are outstanding and easy to make, especially with a rice cooker. I love the process of getting ready for a ride; making my own ride fuel just adds to the joy of the ritual.

Rice cakes galore!

I never really thought cycling could be a culinary experience, but Allen Lim is challenging me to broaden my horizons with the Skratch Labs Feed Zone Portables Cookbook. The recipes are are easy to make, easy to pack, and most importantly -- tasty to eat on rides!

    Great Book!

I'm a large Lim fan and bought this book based on his presentation that I heard of his. The recipes are great and the book has lots of awesome info. He claims that he hopes that people will cook his recipes and not worry about buying pre-made nutrition. He happily cashes in on selling pre-made stuff, but this stuff is so much better! I have both his dinner and nutrition books and love them both!

I've recently been waning myself off highly processed foods, which includes energy bars, pre-made food and junk food. This has been such a great book that provides clean, simple food that can help fuel you before, during and after your physical activities. They have really simple recipes and also some that are little more complicated. All in all, its a great book for anyone wanting to fuel your body with real, clean food!

        Real Food For Fueling

        • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I've always wondered if it is better to fuel up with the gels, bars, and etc that are filled with chemical names rather than ingredients I know by heart. Gave this book as a gift this Christmas, but know I'll be benefiting from it. I might have already copied down a few recipes before wrapping it up!

Gave this as a gift and he loved it he has a lot of races coming up and was tired of just eating energy bars and was in need of some new food. And this book offers a ton of great recipes to eat on the go!

Buy this and become a boss chef

          • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

In summary: Delicious whole food pocket meals for endurance atheletes.

I bought this and the Feed Zone Cookbook when I started training to run the Leadville 100, and I still use both books as my bibles. Lim and Thomas are incredible and breaking down the nutritional science of eating for endurance in the beginning of the book. There are soooo many recipes, and every single one of them is delicious and made with whole ingredients. There are wonderful instructions on how to properly package these meals with aluminum foil for yourself while you're out crushing mountains... this works well in lieu of buying multiple sports bars.

Try the chocolate blueberry rice cakes! They're my favorite.

          Fuel your activities!

          • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This recipe book is a great way to make your own power food to help get you through wherever your adventure take you. The rice based recipes are great because they don't need to be hydrated once they hit your stomach like oat based bars. This helps with hydration management and means you are absorbing the fuel you need better and faster.

          Great Recipes!

          • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I love Pro Bars, still eat them regularly but, its really nice to change things up a bit. Also really fun to cook these together with a group, or your climbing/hiking/whatever partners.

Interesting that many of the recipes are rice based. Scratch Labs informed me that if its oatmeal based your body needs to use water to digest it. With rice, the water is already included, so it doesnt hydrate you but, you dont lose water at least.

If you have any questions, shoot me an email! I'd love to be your gear consultant!

there's a whole mini pie section!!

          • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

If you're like me and the idea of existing on protein bars, gels etc during long rides, hikes, or ski days, just ain't gunna cut it, this is the cook book for you. Not only is there a wide variety of recipes, from sweet to savory, this book provides a very comprehensive education about calorie input vs output and what's right for your activity level.\
          Such a solid find!

          Wide variety of recipes!

          • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

I love how there are recipes in this book for everyone! From vegetarians and meat-lovers to gluten-free individuals. There are so many options, it might take a while to get to tasting all of them. I bought this book for my parents for Christmas. My mom is an avid snowshoer and my dad goes on 40+ mile bike rides all through the seasons (except for the winter when he's skiing) so this book was a definite hit at Christmas. No more pre packaged, boring granola bars!

          • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This cookbook is amazing, with such great recipes and very easy instructions to follow along with pictures to help you out on the way! I would defenetly pick one of these up if your looking at having quality good food with you while you are on your ride, run, etc..

          Get Real, sorry, Eat Real

          • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Great idea's for on the bike nutrition thats easy to eat and digest, love it.

Who would have known that cream cheese, prosciutto and jelly would go so well together and be just what you need to keep from bonking on a long hard ride, so good. Try it.

The intro is fantastic with great nutrition/hydration advice to get your season in order.

          Fight Hunger

          • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This is the perfect way to get started on making your own ride, hike, climb food. Good food that doesn't ruin your stomach or cause you to bonk at the end of the ride.

          delicious recipes!

          • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I'm Definitely in the Portable Zone

          • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I am Gulten Free and I also eat only organic and non GMO. I started with FeedZone then got Portables. Chef Biju and Allen Lim have it down.

Bacon Choc Chip Baked Rice Cakes from Feedzone is my Favorite and the Simple Gluten Free Pastry in Portables just changed my world. Forget over processed babyfood and bars. Quick simple to follow, freeze and take ideas are the way to go...Hike, Bike, Trek, Train, what ever. Keeping it simple is best. Thanks Skratch.
