Silence. That's all Dr. Allen Lim heard when he knew he had arrived at a solution. No longer were his Garmin riders complaining of the headaches and bloated stomachs that had plagued them for so long. Lim had spent countless hours mixing formulas in buckets to create not a product, but a solution that was informally dubbed Secret Drink Mix, or SDM. Why a secret? Because word had spread through the peloton that Lim had perfected a hydration solution that was effective and delicious, and it led to many pros pouring out the electrolyte-heavy, overly sweetened beverages provided by their sponsors and replacing it with Lim's contraband. Fortunately for us, the secret is out, and Lim is offering this pro-developed and battle-tested solution to the world. It's now called the Exercise Hydration Mix, from Lim's Boulder, Colorado-based Skratch Labs.

Unlike many sports drinks, which are formulated around electrolyte or caloric replenishment during physical exertion, the Exercise Mix focuses on keeping your body's sodium levels carefully regulated. Lim discovered that the rampant headaches plaguing his pro riders were not induced by a lack of fluids, but rather, a lack of sodium -- a very typical symptom of dehydration. Essentially, your kidneys regulate fluid retention based on the body's concentration of sodium. When sodium concentration is high, your body is forced to hold on to that fluid to dilute it. But when your sodium levels get too low (ie: through sweat loss), the opposite happens and your kidneys must expel that fluid.

Lim's mix is designed to keep your body's sodium balance carefully regulated, maintaining hydration while also slowing diuresis. With diuresis slowed, you'll be able to pre-hydrate and drink more before a race without needing to make those three inopportune bathroom breaks right before your call-up. If these concepts around a sodium-based formula sound familiar, that's because they are -- Lim's drink mix contains nearly four times the amount of sodium in many convenience-store sports drinks, putting it on par with emergency-grade rehydration salt formulas like Pedialyte, and those used by the World Health Organization to combat severe dehydration.

The athletes that helped Lim develop the Exercise Mix weren't just complaining of headaches. They were also suffering from severe stomach bloating and flavor fatigue. The second half of Lim's solution was to ensure his drink was easy and pleasurable to consume day in and day out. To accomplish this, every ingredient from the Exercise Mix is naturally occurring or naturally sourced from real fruit, which ensures you're not putting anything in your body that's been chemically formulated or enhanced. In short, if it wasn't here on this earth before you were, Dr. Lim and his team refused to use it.

The ingredients are: sucrose, glucose, sodium citrate, potassium citrate, calcium citrate, magnesium citrate, freeze dried fruit, citric acid (a natural preservation agent from pure lime juice), and ascorbic acid. Notice the pronounced absence of the 'natural flavors' found in so many other sports drinks. Part of what makes the Exercise Mix so uniquely palatable even during prolonged periods of exercise and constant re-hydration is the lack of a savoring agent. Generally, chemically-derived flavoring agents like those ominous 'natural flavors' tend to remain on your palate, causing flavor fatigue, and in larger doses, wreak havoc on your gut.

The Exercise Mix uses real lemons, limes, oranges, and raspberries, which are freeze-dried and pounded into powder. This creates a refreshing, super-clean flavor that's easy on your stomach without a lingering aftertaste that wears out its welcome halfway into your race. It means you're not just getting a 'flavor' of lemon or orange, you're getting actual lemons and oranges in the mix. This is one of the many fundamental breakthroughs behind the Skratch Labs drink mixes. Whether you're staying hydrated during a 24-hour endurance race, or re-hydrating after a grueling criterium, they simply taste great.

Lim and his team created two drink mixes, optimizing each for different levels of physical exertion. This Exercise Hydration Mix has a slightly higher salt content, making it Skratch Labs' on-bike mix, best used for periods when your heart rate is up and you're sweating. Because this mix has a supremely high absorption rate and is not a natural diuretic, it's excellent as a preventative measure against dehydration while you ride, when you stop at an aid station, or immediately after your workout or race, because you can drink a larger volume of it at a time without painful bloating. This is due in part to the drink's exceptionally low levels of acidity, and lack of chemically-enhanced flavors.

The Skratch Labs Exercise Hydration Mix is available in Lemon Lime, Orange, or Raspberry. Each one-pound package should provide approximately twenty (23 grams dry), 500ml servings.

  • A hydration mix with the power of nutrition science behind it
  • High sodium content gives your depleted body what it needs
  • No artificial junk or filler makes it easier on the belly
  • Subtle, all-natural flavors go down gently during hard efforts
  • Formulate for exercise specifically—try another hydration mix for daily hydration

Hydration that doesn't suck

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I am a scratch labs believer! They have really done their homework and it has resulted in a great drink mix that will keep you from cramping, but will also provide you with flavor that is not a terrible mockery of (in my case) Lemon Lime. Seriously though, I have had a few other drink mixes over the years and they usually lack in the flavor department, and while they focus on replenishing electrolytes, they don't really do much for energy and taste terrible. Skratch Labs to save the day, it tastes great without being too sweet like a typical

Gotta have it

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I seriously love this stuff. I have been using another drink mix for years until I tried Skratch Labs. The flavor is so much better! I really like the lemon-lime and pineapple flavors. It dissolves really well and is perfect for any occasion when you sweat.

Mhm, mhm!

The apple cinnamon flavor is rapidly becoming my favorite, over my long-held loyalty to the pineapple. For those winter rides, the hot apples and cinnamon makes it way easier to stay hydrated even when the temperature drops.

Yes to the apple cinnamon flavor! Off the hook.

    Skratch hydrating during Speedgoat 50k

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I'm going on two years of using Skratch Labs for all my endurance training and racing, and it's amazing. For my longest mountain days, I'll preload with a glass, and then take a bottle of the exercise mix and then some hypermix powder to refill along the way. All the flavors taste great though my favorite is the raspberry. If you haven't tried the Apple Cinnamon yet, give it a try after your cold workouts. Amazing stuff!

    The Best Stuff Outthere

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I can't count how many bags of this stuff I've used over the last couple years.

The only flavors I haven't tried is the Strawberries and the Passion Fruit. I'd definitely like to give those a shot.

I'm a big fan of the individual servings when on extended trips. I used this stuff on Mt Rainier and definitely was a nice way to add some happiness to some junk weather by drinking some warm Skratch.

    Favorite Flavors:

1 - Lemon Lime - this is by far the best flavor and mixes the best
2 - Orange - this also mixes real well and tastes great
3 - Apples & Cinnamon - this is best warm and with a little whiskey
4 - Matcha Lemons - tastes good, I'm just not big on caffeine
5 - Pineapple - I'm not a pineapple flavor lover, but this is definitely the best tasting pineapple food I've had.
6 - Raspberry - This one mixes the worst of all the flavors I've tried but tastes good

Flavors TBD: Strawberries / Passion Fruit

    Great Supplement for High Intensity

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

This product has been super helpful when going on longer bike rides with plenty of climbing. Normally I am just drinking this on the climb and save some water for the downhill. I have also used it for some longer distance day hikes or after a long party night. Great way to stay hydrated!

    No race gut

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Skratch has become my go to for drink mix. When it comes to days in the saddle, training or racing, this stuff is perfect! It's easy on your stomach and doesn't have an overly sweet taste, but still gives the nutrients needed when pushing your body to the limits. My favorites are the lemon and matcha tea(w/caffeine). I race cat1 road and have been ordering this from backcountry for almost two years now and couldn't be happier, great prices and customer service!

Thanks for the review Sterling! Super helpful to get this feedback out to the community.

    No more headaches

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Well Alan Lim is a genius. My post ride headaches are gone. Additionally my soccer playing daughter has a great mid/ post training and game refuel without carb overload! Lemon lime tastes GREAT!

    skratch for the win

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Skratch labs is my go-to hydration mix. Works better and is better tasting than others... and I've tried lots. The only downside, is I like to use tablets for on-road refills. The single use packets that Skratch uses just aren't as convenient.

My first experience with Skratch :)

Not a load of snake-oil. I drink much more water now than I did before, and I have felt so much better because of it! Taste on this is great, the added salts/sugars keep you hydrated and coming back for more. Orange definitely mixes easier and even tastes fine when warmed up due to air temps.
Try a bag, I bet you don't go back.

      Delicious!

      • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I like this because it has a subtle flavor so it is not overpowering, it is easy to drink, and has no bad aftertaste. When used comparatively with just regular water, it definitely helps to diminish cramping. Also it tastes good if it get warm, and on long road rides that can be important. It comes with a scoop which is nice as well. I used to use a different brand in both of my bottles, now I just use this and supplement with regular water.

No bad stuff in this drink

I've been using this stuff for years. It's always refreshing knowing what ingredients you are using in your sports drinks. So many out there have so much "stuff" in it, it's hard to know if it is really helping you. This stuff has clean, healthy ingredients. It also tastes so good, I even like to put a smaller dose in my water for a little bit more flavor for daily drinking.

        New Go To Hydration

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

After having used most of the top hydration mixes, finally decided to give Skratch a go. They seemed to have figured out the right balance between sodium and electrolytes without giving it a super overly sweet taste. Goes down easy with no rot gut issues and keeps me pedaling.

        Love it!

        • Familiarity: I've used it several times

A scoop in a bottle...tastes great! A scoop in my post-ride strawberry banana smoothie...tastes great! Not much to Skratch other than easy to digest carbs and electrolytes. Easy on the stomach and refreshingling good tasting.

Lemon Lime and Pineapple - Hydrate

Love this stuff. My two favorite flavors are lemon lime and pineapple. This is easy on the stomach and is great for all types/distances of riding. Light taste and not too sweet. Easy to clean out of bottles when you are done.

Avg. ride time: 6h 7m per week

          A fantastic hydration solution

After years of drinking syrupy, sugary water while still getting cramps, change had to come. I gave skratch a try and I was hooked. Very simple ingredients and light taste to complement hard training session day in and day out. I dont get tired of it, even after 4 bottles on long days.

            Still Using It

            • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Admist a market flooded with options I'm still coming back to this stuff for its simplicity, delicious flavor, and availability. I seem to have zero digestive issues with it and it goes down fairly easy, even after lots of hard efforts in extreme heat.

            Great Hot Weather Recovery

            • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I commute 30 miles a day regardless of the weather in the Washington DC area. These hot summer days can easily take it out of you when it’s humid and well into the 80’s in the morning and a humid 90+ in the afternoon. I’ve been mixing a bottle of this in the morning and drinking it after I get to the office to speed recovery for the afternoon ride. I find the lemons & limes flavor to be good – not too strong and it doesn’t bother my stomach when I’m on a longer ride. I also hate using anything other than water when I’m actually riding but I don’t have the same aversion to this product.

Perfect drink for high output activities

            • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

This is the perfect mix for high output activities such as biking or running. Ill fill up one of my bottles with this before I head out and it keeps me feeling better and going longer than any other mix I've tried.

            Great Product - Great Taste

I recently tried this product on a very long multi-day ride with friends and loved it. I have since purchased Lemon-Lime and Raspberry and recommend them highly. I had previously been using Endurox much too expensive.
