If you're serious about hydration

Dr. Allen Lim solved one of the greatest complications that athletes experience during competition -- headaches and bloated stomachs. Lim perfected a formula with his Garmin riders that was informally dubbed Secret Drink Mix, or SDM. Word spread throughout the peloton of Lim's SDM, and now Lim's expertise is available here in 20 Pack servings as the Skratch Labs Exercise Hydration Mix.

Unlike most sports drinks, which are formulated around electrolyte or caloric replenishment during physical exertion, the Exercise Mix focuses on keeping your body's sodium levels carefully regulated. Lim discovered that the rampant headaches plaguing his pro riders were not induced by a lack of fluids, but rather, a lack of sodium -- a very typical symptom of dehydration. Essentially, your kidneys regulate fluid retention based on the body's concentration of sodium. When sodium concentration is high, your body is forced to hold on to that fluid to dilute it. But when your sodium levels get too low (ie: through sweat loss), the opposite happens, and your kidneys must expel that fluid.

Lim's mix is designed to keep your body's sodium balance carefully regulated, maintaining hydration while also slowing diuresis. With diuresis slowed, you'll be able to pre-hydrate and drink more before a race without needing to make those three inopportune bathroom breaks right before your call-up. If these concepts around a sodium-based formula sound familiar, that's because they are -- Lim's drink mix contains nearly four times the amount of sodium in many convenience-store sports drinks, putting it on par with emergency-grade rehydration salt formulas like Pedialyte, and those used by the World Health Organization to combat severe dehydration.

The athletes that helped Lim develop the Exercise Mix weren't just complaining of headaches. They were also suffering from severe stomach bloating and flavor fatigue. The second half of Lim's solution was to ensure that his drink was easy and pleasurable to consume day in and day out. To accomplish this, every ingredient from the Exercise Mix is naturally occurring or naturally sourced from real fruit. This ensures that you're not putting anything in your body that's been chemically formulated or enhanced. In short, if it wasn't here on this Earth before you were, Dr. Lim and his team refused to use it.

The ingredients are as following: sucrose, glucose, sodium citrate, potassium citrate, calcium citrate, magnesium citrate, freeze dried fruit, citric acid (a natural preservation agent from pure lime juice), and ascorbic acid. Notice the pronounced absence of the 'natural flavors' found in so many other sports drinks. Part of what makes the Exercise Mix so uniquely palatable, even during prolonged periods of exercise and constant re-hydration, is the lack of a savoring agent. Generally, chemically-derived flavoring agents like those ominous 'natural flavors' tend to remain on your palate, causing flavor fatigue, and in larger doses, wreak havoc on your gut.

Lim and his team created two drink mixes, optimizing each for different levels of physical exertion. This Exercise Hydration Mix has a slightly higher salt content, making it Skratch Labs' on-bike mix, best used for periods when your heart rate is up and you're sweating. Because this mix has a supremely high absorption rate and is not a natural diuretic, it's excellent as a preventative measure against dehydration while you ride, when you stop at an aid station, or immediately after your workout or race. This is because you can drink a larger volume of it at a time without any painful bloating -- due in part to the drink's exceptionally low levels of acidity, and lack of chemically-enhanced flavors.

The Skratch Labs Exercise Hydration Mix - 20 Pack is available in the flavors Lemon Lime, Orange, Pineapple, or Raspberry.

One gripe

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

My gripe is most bike water bottles are 24 oz. It would be nice if they would create packets for 8 oz increments instead of 16 oz. Other than that, Skratch drink mix works great.

Everything I need, nothing I don't.

It's simple, it tastes good, and it works! Not too sweet, not too salty. Great for anything that makes you sweat. I like the raspberry flavor best, but I haven't found one I don't like.

Spot on, just what I need!

I've been using Skratchlabs for a while and this mix is the best! No crazy aftertaste, or tounge coating, a great solid hydration product. My favorite flavors are the Lemons and Limes and Lemons and Limes w/Matcha. Not a huge fan of the pineapples and oranges, a little too light in flavor for me, but my wife loves it.

    The best!

Another great drink mix from Skratch Labs. This one [matcha/lemon] with a mild caffeine kick from green tea. I really like the clean energy feel of all of these drink mixes.

I use the exercise hydration mix during / after bike rides, hikes or big ski days. It tastes way better than other mixes and works quickly and effectively. The Orange and Lemon-Lime flavors are my jam!

    Love It!

Skratch is legit, use this prior to long ski tours or rides on the bike. Usually just drink water while I'm out, but if it's going to be a long day I'll throw some skratch in my bottles.

Surprised at how good it is

        • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I was expecting something that helped out a bit, maybe add some spice to my water bottle. It's shocking how much this refreshes me. I drink this at the gym halfway through an hour jog on the treadmill. My second half hour is much more productive and easier with this added to my water. The taste is minimal, but adds a bit of flavor above water. I love this because it doesn't blast your tongue with flavor when you're trying to focus on a run. It's not sweet so it's not like typical sports drinks or mixes. I thought this would be an add on to some of my runs, something like a treat on some days. Now I'm thinking of it as critical to hitting greater intensities for longer runs.

Go Citrus & Don't Look Back

A lot of powder mixes result in being too sweet & syrupy or taste somewhat chalky. The Skratch Lab Exercise Hydration mixes hit that happy medium of tasting good and not being overly sweet. Despite Raspberry being shown in the photo, I personally love the Orange flavor best with Lemon Lime as a close runner up. This is a staple for keeping me riding longer and stronger!

          Conveniently portioned.

          • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Easy to pack in your travel bag or a jersey pocket for those times when it’s inconvenient to take the larger Skratch bag with you. If you're on the go often or dislike gas station stops for Gatorade, these are a life saver for staying hydrated and getting some much-needed calories.

          My Staple

          • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have, and continue to use everything under the sun as far as nutritional products go; but Skratch has been my go-to electrolyte and lighter calorie exercise hydration drink mix since it was released.

The flavor is light enough to drink at any temperature, but has enough energy and electrolytes to sustain you for up to 2 hours on the bike without much else in the way of nutrition.

Easy to say, any time I am riding for 2 hours or under, my bike is always outfitted with 2 bottles of Skratch Exercise!

My favorite flavors are the Matcha/Lemon and Raspberry; I always have several bags of each on hand at all times.

          Best exercise mix.

          • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

As mentioned below multiple times, these Scratch Labs mixes are by far the easiest mixes to stomach. A lot of hydration mixes just don't sit well in my stomach and as a result I end up being more dehydrated. These mixes are so light it is just like drinking water but with some light flavoring.

Getting Risky after a Raspberry Skratch

My stomach is happier than ever

          • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

There have been some mixes that completely ruin my stomach. I've never had an issue with the Skratch Labs mixes. This is the mix that I take on my mild to moderate runs, usually lasting 2-3 hours. I'll use two pouches and I notice more energy during my runs and super fast recovery after. I used to love running on E all the time, though after trying these out I never leave home without them.

          This stuff works

These little packs make it easy to take your Skratch Labs hydration mix on the go. I switched to Skratch about two years ago and haven't looked back. The stuff works and dosent taste bad.

            Easiest to stomach

            • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

In my opinion Skratch is far superior to any other sports drink on the market. It definitely works its magic in the hottest of conditions and during the most strenuous workouts. I have all the flavors and Lemon Lime is my favorite. It's a super lite flavor addition to water and very easy to drink. It's pretty much the opposite flavor of any drink you would get at a gas station or grocery store.

Do any Skratch products contain Stevia? I cannot STAN the stuff, and it seems to be allowed under the "all natural, no artificial sweeteners" term.

            Saved me more than once

            • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I love these. They are so much better than your average sports drink. I just wish the taste was a tad better, that being said, it's not too bad. I need to get brave and try some of the other flavors.

            Better than Gatorade

            • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Does the job without the sugar rush or hurting my stomach. When I go out for a big day or a long climb I typically preload my water bottle with one of these and stash a few in my bag for later. I've tried a few of the flavors and prefer the lemon lime.
