Genius 7 Air Carbon Cycling Shoe

The Genius shoe is among the old guard in the Sidi lineup, well revered for its fit and durability and the shoe continues to be one of its top sellers to this day. We love its reliability and good looks along with the ability to replace most of its hardware like the heel pad and buckle, making it a good investment. This particular version of the Genius 7 Air Carbon Cycling Shoe means its Microtech Microfiber upper gets a myriad of perforations, adding much needed ventilation to the venerable material on hot summer rides.

The Genius Fits use Sidi's beloved ratcheting buckle for retention. Is "beloved" too strong of a word to describe fastening devices on cycling shoes? Maybe. But after tens or even hundreds of thousands of miles together, we suggest that the average cyclist's bond with Sidi's buckle system is more than simply utilitarian. With wire dials (originally a Sidi innovation in the early 80s) and laces enjoying a fashionable renaissance in the peloton, it's easy to lose sight of the fact that virtually any cyclist pedaling in anger during the past three decades relied almost exclusively on this buckle—or a buckle largely based on it—to fasten their cycling shoes. So "beloved"? Yeah, we're comfortable with it.

Given the buckle's history, you're no doubt familiar with its micro-adjustment operation, which lets you vary strap pressure to nail the perfect fit, every time. The Soft Instep 2 Closure System evenly spreads the upward stroke pedaling forces across the top of your foot while also alleviating the discomfort of over-tightening. The mid- and forefoot fit is managed by a pair of standard Sidi hook-and-loop straps that feature an additional strip of polymer teeth to ensure secure locking that persists long after the hook-and-loop filaments have been blunted down to wilted, apparently useless shadows of their former selves.

The before mentioned water-repellent and quick-drying Microtech uppers get a host of tiny air holes for maximum breathability and are a blessing while climbing on hot, stifling days. Additionally, it's both abrasion- and mildew-resistant for durability and long life and resists stretching so the fit is kept in check season after season. If you've ever lost a buckle in a crit pileup, then you'll also be happy to know that all of the upper's hardware is also replaceable.

The Millennium 5 Carbon Composite outsole is redesigned and isn't of the current crop of full-carbon that now defines the $200 shoe range. Instead, it's a nylon matrix shot through with carbon fiber, blending weight, stiffness, and price in a sole that's as ready to race as it is to spin through a charity ride century. It also resists warping due to humidity, heat, and age, so you'll be wearing the these long after you've worn out and replaced the heel pad. The important takeaway here is that for all those years we've been relying on Sidi's buckle to keep our feet strapped to our shoes' soles, this has been the sole we've been strapped to. Comfort, stiffness, durability: it's all there. We know because we've tested it for years on end, so all of the above isn't just catalog palaver, it's a reflection of our experience.

  • Sidi's classic cycling shoes built for comfort, cooling, and durability
  • Plenty of stiffness and controlled flex from the Millenium 5 outsole
  • Breathable, synthetic uppers conform to your foot and allow for airflow
  • Traditional rachet buckle and hook-and-loop strap fastening system
  • Sidi's Genius line is the definition of comfort, style, and performance cycling footwear

Fantastic Shoe

I've put it through the wringer
Runs small

A four star review is nothing to sneeze at in my book. They are truly a fantastic product, but not quite perfect...which is why I’m looking forward to upgrading to a pair of Genius 10. The upper is very comfortable and wraps my foot quite nicely. The toe box is just roomy enough that my toes can wiggle, but I don’t feel my foot slipping around even when I am putting down as many watts as I can muster on a sprint. The buckle is reliable and holds firm, although at times I find myself wishing for a micro adjustment in between two buckle settings. That said, once the fit is selected, it is locked in. The strap is large enough that it disperses pressure without any pain at all. The sole is also very stiff and has held up well even when doing fitness testing - I never felt as though I was sacrificing wattage to shoe flex at all. My only real complaint with the shoe comes with the velcro. It holds reasonably well, but is a pain to adjust on the fly, and just doesn’t hold up well over time...and is basically the only part of a Sidi shoe you can’t repair or replace. I have put thousands of miles into the shoes and aside the velcro and a couple of scuffs on the toes the shoes still look like new. I have full confidence in Sidi that I can buy another pair and they will last, and hopefully the dial system will prove to be more durable...or at least a component that can be changed out because I’m quite sure the shoes themselves will hold up.

Very pleased

I've used it several times
True to size

It was time for new shoes, and I'm not a fan of the current wire designs. Bought these with velcro and buckle closures, which work well. I wear 11.5-12 shoes, and the 46.5 fits perfectly. They are a little wider than some other brands I've tried, which lends to a good fit. Having some replaceable parts is a good benefit too, to extend the life of the shoe.

Perfect fit

I've used it several times
True to size

I’ve been using Sidis since 1975. They’ve never disappointed. They have great support and fit. I have sort a wide foot, EE, and high instep. I contemplated the mega because in the past, 1/2 sizes were wide. The 43-1/2 fit my size 10 foot perfectly. Haven’t used them for long rides yet, but I think they feel up to the job.
