Why We Like The Ergo 5 Carbon Cycling Shoe

Sidi didn't become one of the leading manufacturers of premium cycling shoes by chance, it earned its reputation by using top quality materials and building shoes with exceptional craftsmanship. In later years, we've been treated to carbon soles and dial closures, and other brands offer this too, so what makes Sidi shoes still so popular? Simple. It comes down to fit, and the Ergo 5 Cycling Shoe continues the tradition with signature tailoring that crafts a shoe that’s comfy on long rides and holds up season after season.

Compared to the outgoing Ergo 4, the 5 receives an all-new upper constructed from Sidi's Techpro, an eco-friendly synthetic leather that's durable, lightweight, and water resistant. What we like most about it is how it's secure enough to wrap around your foot comfortably offering stable pedaling yet it's supremely supple so it doesn't cause hotspots if feet swell or dials are cranked down. The 5 does continue in the Sidi Ergo tradition of mixed-media closures and instead of two Techno3 Push dials like we find on the Shot and Wire 2, the Ergo 5 mounts one up top and on the side of the forefoot in a more traditional position, while utilizing a hook-and-loop closure strap for forefoot retention. It does enjoy the same Soft Instep 4 strap that the higher-end models receive helping to reduce weight while offering up luxurious padding for riding comfort and at the rear of the shoe, its redesigned heel cup stabilizes the foot for efficient pedaling.

Sole duties are the same as the previous Ergo 4, using Sidi's Twelve Carbon composite sole which relies on a carbon reinforced nylon sole with a carbon weave plate stiffening it where needed. If you don't have your sights set on every sprint point, you likely won't notice the difference between it and the Vent Carbon on the Shot and Wire, however, the Ergo 5's composite sole goes a long way in providing better all-day comfort by taking the stiffness down a couple of rungs.

Perhaps the most enduring features of the Ergo 5 and all Sidi shoes for that matter is its legendary last, honed over decades of working with some of the world's greatest cyclists and the ability to replace parts. Very few shoes are more universally praised for their comfort than Sidi and that all starts with the last. Small parts such as heel pads and dials are easily replaceable giving its owner superior value over those years of ownership.

The Ergo 5 is available in whole and half sizes between 38 to 47 and in a size 48.

A thing of beauty

I have two very different feet as a result of bunion surgery on one foot and tendon surgery on the other. I was very concerned about fit of new bike shoes. I ordered the 47, felt maybe too large on one foot, got the 46.5, and after walking around the house several times for a few weeks selected the smaller size and went for a ride. A 60 mile ride in 95 degree heat. The shoes are wonderful. They are not light, but so well made that my foot feels secure and I don't even think about the shoes. The material must ventilate as I did not feel my feet were hot, even on a hot day. The techno 3 push dials work well, and don't seem that hard to engage while riding, even with full-finger gloves. I agree with the previous reviewer about how your shoes feel while walking is not how they feel riding. These are expensive shoes, and I have no regrets about buying them. I'm 65 years old, and with replacement parts these may be the last bike shoes I buy. Go out in style!

They make me smile

Well no one else has reviewed these so I will. I love them! I have always worn Sidi shoes. I have a box of them that I have accumulated over the years. But my feet have changed with age and appear to have grown a bit. FIT: My problem with shoes is that I can't tell in the showroom if they work. I have come to the conclusion, more than once, is if they feel good in the store they are too big! I first got a size 43 but they felt too long. Not obvious until the cleats were installed and I am riding the bike. I tried some Northwave GT's and they felt too long at 42.5 and Northwave said that the 42 would be too small. Not convinced but decided not too risk it. Got my 2nd pair of Ergo 5's on sale and decided to risk it. They fit. yeah could be long but I am sure on these that the 42 would be too small. The toe box is tight and I just fit it. Enough of my trials. The shoes are well made and stiff enough for this 67 year old rider. (I describe my riding style as I ride like a 20 year old at 67 year old speeds). I chose these over the Genius 10's because they have the techno 3 push dials. On the 10's I could not easily fine the flip up tab. I got the red ones :-) They don't match anything I own and I don't care. They look great! The techno 3 push dials may not be as easy as the latest boa's but they work fine once you get used to them. The techno material is typically Sidi and I like they way it holds my foot. In conclusion, I really like the shoe and recommend it highly!
