Description

Why We Like The Dragon 5 Cycling Shoe

The Dragon 5 Mountain Bike Shoe falls in the upper middle range of Sidi's mountain bike offerings, combining features of the World Cup worthy Drako 2 and the versatile Cape to round out their lineup of very well-made Italian cycling shoes. It's the successor to the renowned Dragon 4, and gets updated with new uppers, a more breathable tongue, a new heel cup, and a revised Soft Instep Closure Strap. And while the Dragon 5's SRS Carbon Composite Sole may not be quite as stiff as the full carbon sole found on the Drako 2's, you'll still reap the rewards of efficient power transfer to the pedals but with a little bit of extra flex that makes these shoes more comfortable when you have to dismount, and thus more suitable to adventurous mountain biking or cyclocross applications.

The Dragon 5 shoes are constructed using Sidi's Techpro Microfiber uppers—an eco-friendly synthetic leather that's incredibly durable, lightweight, water-resistant, and offers comfortable support for your foot. The uppers are also mated to a redesigned heel cup that improves heel retention while saving weight over the previous version, as well as a new tongue that's more ventilated to improve the shoe's breathability. The uppers come in new matte colorways, and feature a reinforced toe guard to protect against rock strikes.

Additional updates include the Soft Instep 4 Closure System, which uses a sleeker and lighter upper strap that's adjustable side to side so you can center it across the highest part of your foot. The strap fastens down using Sidi's Tecno-3 Push Dial, letting you make micro-adjustments in order to dial in the perfect tension for this critical area. An additional Tecno-3 dial below the strap allows further adjustments, and paired with the padded tongue provides exceptional comfort for the top of your foot. The toe box is adjustable as well using a High Security hook-and-loop strap.

Of all the technologies Sidi built into the Dragon 5 in order to help it withstand on-trail abuse, the Sole Replacement System (the SRS in SRS Carbon Composite sole) may be our favorite. SRS is simply the ability to replace the lugs and guard plates on the outsole, refreshing the shoe's grip so they can continue to last season after season. The SRS system also accommodates two toe spikes for extra traction when conditions are especially slick.

  • High-end Italian cycling shoes for trail riding and racing
  • Sleeker & lighter closure strap delivers a comfortable, secure fit
  • New heel cup maintains optimal foot position & resists deformation
  • Revised uppers are lightweight, supportive, and very resilient
  • Tongue sees increased ventilation to improve breathability
  • Carbon composite sole is stiff & efficient, yet still walkable
  • Replaceable outsole, straps, and dials ensure longevity
  • Also available in Mega version for cyclists needing a higher volume fit

Sidi recommends following the procedure below to ensure that you choose the right size.
Measure your foot by following these steps:
1. Put a sheet of paper on the floow with the short side against the wall.
2. Put the sole of your bare foot on it with the heel pressing against the wall.
3. Mark the point in front of the tip of your longest toe on the sheet of paper.
4. Measure the distance between the margin of the sheet of paper where you placed your heel and the point where you made the mark. Always round up the measurement to the nearest mm.
You may find that your right and left foot are different lengths. Always measure both of them and use the longest measurement as your reference.
If you are undecided between two sizes after consulting the table, Sidi recommends that you opt for the larger size.

I love the Sidi fit and love these Dragon 5 for all my cycling: road, MTB, trainer, commuting, and for walking. I've only used SPDs since the 90s because of the versatility of the shoes. The Dragon 5 has been a good replacement for Dominator 4 (15+ years), my favorites since the original version (10+ years). The last pair I had were in Sidi's separate "Narrow" width sizing but they stopped making them. Fortunately, these standard width Dragons are adjustable for narrow feet. I see why they stopped making a separate "Narrow" size. The synthetic upper material is a little bit stiff, even after more than a thousand miles. Feels stiffer than the old Dominators. My feet don't sweat much, so the minimal ventilation isn't a problem for me and prefer a little bit less for cooler and damper weather. On the other hand, my face sweats a lot and the sturdy upper cleans up easily after a drippy sweaty Zwift session. The stiff sole is great, especially for road. The stock insole is a bit thin; I upgraded with an aftermarket. The ratcheting cable is precise but takes a I think I prefer the older style ratchet which was easier to tighten while riding, but I guess cables are where it's at these days. I went with the Dragon this time because of the replaceable sole. The old Dominator treads wore out faster than the uppers from walking. For five stars: more pliable upper, a better insole, and slightly easier buckle/ratchet. Fit is five stars.

Have to agree with the others...

Familiarity:

Runs large

Pains me to leave a lousy review for Sidi shoes since they've been the only brand I've worn for 15+ years, but these are a let down. The lack of ventilation is a huge shortcoming. I'm not someone who rides when it's that hot out nor do I have particularly sweaty feet so I thought maybe the other reviews were just overblown on the lack of ventilation. They aren't, and the lack of ventilation is real. Seem to run about 1/2 size larger than past years, too.

I have a few pairs of these now. (Normal wear and replacements) Not only are these nice and stiff, they look good too! Fit true to size and absolutely love them.

These are not the old dragons, there is no heal adjustment and there is almost no ventilation. These are like dominators.

NICE SHOE BUT BAD VENTILATION

Shoe looks great and fits great BUT ventilation is terrible. This will be a great shoe for spring/fall but now I need to find another shoe for the summer. If your feet get hot this is not the shoe for you. For the price I’m disappointed. If it had better ventilation I’d give it 5 stars.
