ShimanoJ04C Metallic Disc Brake Pad
Item # SHI00DF
J04C Metallic Disc Brake Pad
Keep your Shimano XTR or XT brakes running smoothly with the Shimano XTR/XT (J04C) Metallic Disc Brake Pad. Made with a steel base and featuring Shimano's trademark cooling fins, these pads reinvigorate your braking system for confident stopping power and modulation. Compared to organic pads, metallic pads brake better at high heats, so they'll stay responsive through long, sketchy descents. They also last longer, though the added reliability comes the cost of less initial bite and a bit of extra noise. Each package contains pads, retaining clip, and spring needed to replace the pads on one brake caliper.
- A brake pad for long periods of heavy braking
- Aluminum fins promote cooling
- Metallic pads wear longer than organic
- Each package includes 2 brake pads

If you've done much riding in the Smoky Mountains, you know that not only are the roads steep but that they also can have some pretty sharp turns in them with very little room to bail. I do a lot of mixed surface riding, so my rotors and pads often get coated with gravel dust and all kinds of weird road grime. With that in mind, I needed a brakes with some serious bite. Pairing metal pads, hydro calipers, and 160mm rotors has saved my skin more than a handful of times. These pads last substantially longer than resin pads at the cost of being marginally more abrasive on rotors & slightly louder when in use - fair trade when it comes to needing to stop.

Shimano GRX 400 brakes
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times
I ordered the pads that backcountry lists under the name "Shimano BR-RS805/RS505 Flat Mount Metallic Ice-Tech Disc Brake Pad", which are the L04C pads, and they fit my GRX 400 brakes, which came new with the L03A resin pads.

Xt brakes are just about the best you can get. A great price. My last pads last me 100s of miles. Im sure these will do the same.

shimano does very little poorly...

The metallic ones seem to last longer than the resin and I think don't squeal (or at least squeal less) than resin. I've got several bikes with shimano stoppers (XT, SLC, Saint). If new pads don't restore original performance, do a flush. I pushed out some black fluid on my bikepack rig after replacing the worn pads on the rear didn't make things perfect. And the shimano brakes bleed/flush easier than just about anything out there.

Great bite and long lasting! What else can you ask for? Maybe not the howl they make when dusty.....but I can live with that for pads I can trust.

Great Brake Pads
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times
These are brake pads, so there's not much to say other than the resin pads wear out much faster so these are what to buy. In fact, when I go to replace mine (a very easy task, by the way), I'm almost always surprised by how much material is left on the pad. If you're hoping the Ice Tech fins are going to make your rotors frost up like the Coors Lite Silver Bullet train just went by, I have some bad news for you. But they do look pretty bionic, so that's a bonus.

JO4C pads

I had to replace my shimano xt brake pads and went with the metallic pads. The brakes came stock with resin material and didn't even last the whole season. These pads last long and are pretty quiet.

I prefer metal brake pads for the added bite and longer life span. Just note they do make a bit of noise from time to time, go with organic pads if you prefer quite brakes.

Work great
They work well, last longer than the resin pads which are also good. A smidge more noise and maybe a bit less modulation, but it's not real noticeable in dry conditions - I haven't used them in very wet conditions, being in Utah. Just to add, they are also compatible with the M8000 XT brakes; in fact, the M8000 XT brakes come with this pad stock. It would be helpful to add that compatibility to the list.

DIY replacement, works well.

I've got these on my hardtail, full squish and 29+. Just like your car, replace the pads BEFORE the brake pad material is exhausted so you don't have to replace the rotor too. I try to keep an extra set in the garage (especially when the metal pads are on sale) so I can change them as needed rather than the temptation to keep riding and risking poor braking, obscene noise and/or ruining the rotor.
